    108. Mental Toughness Tips When Girls Win with Coach MJ McCloskey Feb 08, 2024
    Show notes

Today, I’m sitting down with MaryJo McCloskey—known in the golf world as Coach MJ—who runs through six topics that will help you elevate your golf performance, all based on her book “When Girls Win”.

Coach MJ’s writing journey began in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic and was fueled by a compelling desire to empower others with the wisdom gleaned from over two decades of coaching.

We talk about the underrated superpower known as “self-awareness”, why it always pays to embrace pressure out on the course, must-knows regarding one’s short game, and the importance of team spirit within this individual sport. Get inspired by stories of golfers breaking records with only indoor practice and the pivotal role of social media in shaping athletes' self-perception.

Finally, we discuss the role of the subconscious mind in sports performance and the art of honing one's mental game, including a short lesson that illustrates the power of positive mantras.

    About MaryJo McCloskey:

MaryJo McCloskey is a six-time NCAA Division-III West Region Coach of the Year and a nine-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year. In 2006, she launched the first George Fox University Women's Golf Program and since then has led the team to prestige as one of the most dominant in the country with seven NCAA trophies including winning a National Championship and 11 consecutive top-10 finishes on the National Stage. Her passion is to help student-athletes grow stronger and realize that anything is possible with a positive mindset, strong work ethic, and a passionate desire to learn.

    107. The Transition from Baseball & Softball to Golfer with Milo Lines Feb 05, 2024
    Show notes

I’m sitting down with golf instructor Milo Lines to dissect the mechanics behind a powerful golf swing by extracting valuable lessons from Milo’s other favorite sport, baseball.

We tackle the intricate balance of body rotation and weight shift that is at the heart of generating power in both sports. Milo gives us a unique perspective on the challenges baseball players face when transitioning to golf, especially when it comes to managing hand movement and clubface control.

We also unpack those strengths from athletes of other sports like hockey and how anyone can put these lessons to work in elevating their golf game.

    About Milo Lines:

Milo Lines was a standout baseball player in his early years, but due to an elbow injury, his dreams of playing in the big leagues were dashed. After a bit of coaxing from his father, he decided to pick up the game of golf. After graduating from Utah Valley University, Milo turned professional and played full-time on several tours. Since committing his time to coaching, he has also won several PGA section events and qualified to play in the PGA National Championship multiple times. He has been a PGA Professional since 2005 and joined the team at Superstition Mountain as a Golf Instructor in 2011.

    Show notes

Michael Bernoff, founder of the Average Sucks brand and the Human Communications Institute, draws a roadmap that we can use to take our golf game from average to exceptional.

“Winning,” Michael says, “has more to do with state of mind than an actual occasion. We want to make success easy and failure impossible.”

    104. Inside Look and Reflections on the VISION54 Golf Camp Experience Jan 25, 2024
    Show notes

I’m sitting down with fellow VISION54 alumna Jenny to discuss how her golf journey found new life during the pandemic, eventually leading her to connect with us at The Royal Dublin during an unforgettable trip to Ireland.

Jenny shares her transformative experience and key takeaways from the Three-Day VISION54 Human Skills Camp at Talking Stick Golf Club. “You’re not golfing to score,” Jenny says. “You’re golfing to feel.”

She tells us right off the bat that the camp delves deep into mindset over swing technique, with a focus on the process over outcome, and the importance of balance, tempo, and tension as complementary to technique.

We also talk about the intentional, well-structured schedule we went through at the camp, which gave us a great balance between drill time and interaction with our instructors and fellow students.

Ultimately, the Human Skills Camp was an amazing opportunity for all of us to rediscover the joy of golf, regardless of experience and handicap index.

    101. Energy Hacks with Will Armijo Jan 15, 2024
    Show notes

I’m sitting down with Will Armijo to break down his top energy hacks to perform at your best on the course, every time.

Listen in as Will discusses the impact of diet on energy management, especially around how food choices before and during golf can significantly affect performance on the fairway. It's not just about finding ways to boost energy, but also understanding what might be causing energy dips.

Another foundation when it comes to energy management is high-quality sleep. Will offers tips such as keeping the bedroom cool, using heavier blankets, and utilizing sleep tracking devices, like the Oura ring, to monitor sleep quality.

While caffeine is a common go-to for an energy boost, Will cautions against synthetic sources of caffeine, such as those found in many energy drinks, which can lead to spikes and subsequent crashes in energy levels.

Finally, Will advocates for gamifying health habits to stay motivated and consistently improve your golf game.

    100. **100th Episode Special** Goals and Beliefs We Are Letting Go in 2024 with the OG Crew Jan 11, 2024
    Show notes

To mark our 100th episode, I'm joined by Justin, Alex, and Tameka to look back on our golf journeys over the past year and share the goals we aim to achieve in the next twelve months.

After updating each other on our golf game, Alex discusses the current legal challenges that women’s golf groups and events are facing in California, including her own Babes Golf. She talks about how she’s continuing to push for inclusive spaces for women in the sport, and how the golf community at large is rallying together to support those affected by this issue.

We then get into today’s topic: golf beliefs we intend to drop, and the beliefs and goals we’ve set for ourselves going into 2024. From conquering the fear of approaching that first tee to navigating self-doubt around short putts, our guests illustrate through their personal experiences how mastering mindset is as significant, if not more so, as perfecting your technique.
