86: How to Handle the Tough Times (and Whistle Through The Darkness) Oct 31, 2016
    Show notes

Out of the mouths of babes: "Life doesn't frighten me at all."

That's how this message, these powerful words from the great poet Dr. Maya Angelou, reentered my consciousness -- it was thanks to the recent learnings of my two little boos (the young sons of my best friend) who recited the line, "Life doesn't frighten me at all..." as their parents drove me to the airport for my move from New York to Atlanta. I adore them so just about anything they do delights me, but this moment was particularly inspiring. One, because of the power of the phrase coming from these little souls, two, because of the story behind the poem, which Dr. Angelou said she wrote "for all children who whistle in the dark and refuse to admit that they're frightened out of their wits."

How many times have you found yourself having to, as an adult, whistle through that darkness in your life. As a woman, as an entrepreneur, as a leader, a creative, a mom, a person just being -- there are going to be moments when you are "frightened out of your wits" and that you will need to decide to be brave, to whistle.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I talk about moments where we might face that darkness and how to whistle through it. You'll also get to hear a recording of Dr. Angelou reading her poem, which appears in the children's book, Life Doesn't Frighten Me, where her verses are paired with the embracing images of artist Jean Michel Basquiat. Have a listen, and keep whistling!

83: Everybody Can't Come (and why you need to be okay with that) Oct 26, 2016
    Show notes

    Everybody can't come.

This is something we all have to realize eventually -- especially if you're up to something, creating something, trying something new and making moves. Everybody ain't gonna get it, so everybody can't come along for the ride. And you know what? We shouldn't expect them to.

On this episode, I talk about the big move I have coming up and how I realized that everybody can't come along. We also discuss other ways that we can get support when the people we thought would show up and be there just...don't, and my suggestions for how you might structure your friend circle. As they say, there are levels to this!

    Show notes

Leslie Bradshaw is the proud descendant of six generations of Oregon trail pioneers and a family of farmers, so she knows intuitively how to make her own way. She also knows when to move on to new territory, and when it's time to let the land lie fallow until the nutrients return to the soil. The burnout and fatigue led Leslie to Miami, where she made the brave decision to step away from it all, replenish and then re-entered the job market.

On the episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Leslie speaks candidly about that tumultuous time in her life and career, and about getting over her addiction to work, knowing when to step back to move forward, creating your "job/career universe" and why strong is the new sexy.

81: Be Willing to Give Up What You Have to Have What You Don't Oct 24, 2016
    Show notes

Are you willing to give up what you have to have what you don't?

In order to create space for the things we want in our lives -- new experiences, new opportunities, new people, new beginnings -- this is something we have to consider. It's what I considered, among many other things, when I finally decided to make the move from New York to Atlanta, even though I was -- am still am -- nervous about doing so and unsure of what to expect. The things is, I have decided to go into it with no expectations, to remain focused on WHY I am making this move and to be willing to give up what I have in New York to create the life I envision.

In this episode I talk about the how to give up what you have and make space for what's next, and why it's something you should consider as well.

    Show notes

"I am a radical believer in reinvention," says life coach and Self-Help Socialite founder Rachel Tenebaum, who believes one of the most important things we can do in our lives is "live our truths." In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Rachel talks about the importance of being a "serial grower," the power of masterminds and the way to know if you're on the right path.

    On this episode, you'll learn:

How to shift your view of failure to refinement. How to give yourself permission to research your own interests and ways of being in order to determine what you really want. How to handle the pressure of job security. The power of shifting your network. 79: Don't Get Caught Up in the Fast Lane (Why "Busy" Isn't Good for Business) Oct 20, 2016
    Show notes

It's a slippery slope: Many of us, especially as entrepreneurs, get caught up in the fast lane -- appearing "busy" -- because we think it shows the world that we're up to something. Being busy must mean that we're gettin' busy when it comes to business, right?

Not necessarily. In the past week, I was reminded of this while listening to author and Good Life Project founder Jonathan Fields, who was a guest on several of my favorite podcasts recently, discussing his book, How to Live a Good Life, and this idea that being busy and being seen has become a priority for many of us, and, as a result, a distraction.

In this episode I open up about moments I've gotten caught up in the fast lane, rushing and being busy and how it has cost me -- figuratively and literally. I also offer tips on ways that you can be conscious of what lane your traveling in, and how to make the switch.

78: Why You Scared? How Getting to the Bottom of Your Fears Helps You Move Forward Oct 19, 2016
    Show notes

What's the real reason that you're afraid to do that thing?

Be honest with yourself when you ask the question. Be honest with yourself when you say the answer.

I had to confront this question recently and share that experience -- and the answer -- in this episode. When we get to the bottom of the WHY of our fears, it creates space for us to confront it, and often, to realize just how silly (and small!) it is.

77: Kathryn Finney of Digital Undivided on Women in Tech, Entrepreneurs in Love and Building a Badass Brand Oct 18, 2016
    Show notes

Kathryn Finney, founder of Digital Undivided, is someone I consider an O.G. -- the flyest O.G. -- in the technology space. Kathryn, who grew up in the midwest learning about computers from very early on, started one of the first big fashion and lifestyle blogs, The Budget Fashionista, back when Google was "a baby," as you'll hear in the episode. She later sold the blog and the brand, and has since moved on to really be an advocate for other women in the technology space.

Today, as head of Digital Undivided, Kathryn provides programs and resources -- such as her BIG accelerator program in Atlanta -- to empower women in technology and give them access to the vital tools, knowledge and support they need to build successful, sustainable companies. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Kathryn talks about how to level the playing field when it comes to the number of Black and Latina women who receive investment, the kind of support network -- and romantic relationships -- entrepreneurs should consider, and how to build a badass brand that people may want to buy.

    On this episode, you'll learn...

What entrepreneurs looking for love should consider. How becoming a parent empowers you to say no and mean it.The shift to the 1099 economy. Her advice for consultants looking to work with big corporations. How she built and sold her blog, The Budget Fashionista. The drawbacks of aligning your brand with yourself.3 ways to decouple yourself from your brand so that it can stand alone.4 reasons that people buy into a tech brand. How to change the disparity in how few Black and Latina women tech founders get investment. Why you should only take investment to get growth not to get started.Other ways your family and friends can invest in you that you may never have considered. And the POWER of asking for support. Why support networks -- especially with people who aren't afraid to tell you about yourself -- are key to your success.
