206: The Process of Elimination: How to Let Go of What's Keeping You Sick, Stuck and Dissatisfied Apr 18, 2017
    Show notes

Food poisoning is a beast -- and not a sweet one. I'm recovering from my last bout -- the third in the past few months -- and it has pushed me to figure out what the heck is going on. Something in my diet is not working, something has got to go! So I'm going through the process of elimination, removing the things that I think are no longer good for me, seeing how it goes, and then replacing them with better, healthier options.

The same is necessary for us in our businesses, careers and lives. Occasionally, we need to go through the process of elimination and remove those things (or people) that no longer serve us. As difficult as it may be at times, doing so creates space for something or someone that may be a better fit to come in. In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I talk about how to let go of what's keeping you sick, stuck and dissatisfied.

205: It's Time to Stop Playing and Do That Thing Apr 17, 2017
    Show notes

"The more important a project is to your evolution, the more resistance you will feel to it."~Author Steven Pressfield, "The War of Art."

In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I share how resistance (and fear) kept me from taking action and completing a project that has been a dream of mine since I was a child: Finishing a book proposal and ultimately becoming an author. But the pursuit of perfection and the ability to come up with plenty of reasons (i.e., excuses) gave me plenty of "outs" for not completing this job and fully going after this dream.

That is until I finally stopped playing and decided to do that thing and do the work! Life is short, time is limited, you can no longer waste either of those gifts. Find out how to push through the resistance and make a commitment to take a step toward your destiny. It's waiting for you. As Wayne Dyer said, "Don't die with your music in you."

Celebrating the high points in your business and career is the easy part, right? Everybody's cheering you on, liking what you offer, telling you how fantastic you are, wanting to be there for you every step of the way. But what about the moments when you're experiencing the lows? The crowd disperses, it can sometimes feel lonely and confusing, and you're often left alone with your own thoughts that threaten to drive you mad if you let them.

Fortunately, although we certainly live in a world where moments of our lives and journeys are delivered through filtered images and highlight reels, more and more entrepreneurs are being honest about the ups and downs, highs and lows, of entrepreneurship. The roller coaster is real, and to survive the dips, you need support.

201: Using Art to Challenge Beauty "Standards" and Celebrate Bald Women with Photographer Alyscia Cunningham Apr 11, 2017
    Show notes

Entrepreneur, author, filmmaker and photographer Alyscia Cunningham learned important lessons about building up a resilience to rejection from her tight-knit, Trinidadian family. As a five-year-old, she walked door-to-door with her grandfather as he sold water filters in their Baltimore neighborhood and, on occasion, encountered hostile customers. And her mom, who suffered a stroke after a brain aneurysm when Alyscia was just two years old, never the partial paralysis on her left side stop her from living a full life.

In 2013, when Alyscia wanted to do a "big chop" to support women with cancer, she experienced unexpected rejection and negativity again, this time from women who told her she was crazy to cut her waist-length locks. As was family tradition, that rejection fueled her to move forward more determined than ever, not only to cut her own hair in support, but to celebrate the beauty of bald women in her new documentary and book, I Am More Than My Hair.

In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Alyscia talks about using your art as a tool of social commentary, finding support for your project through multiple resources and how to incorporate your family into your business as it continues to evolve.

    On this episode you'll learn:

Be open to expanding your project beyond what you envision.Smart resources to support your documentary.Fiscal sponsorship -- what it means and how it can support your project. How to use your art for social good. The value of involving family, especially children, in your business. How to find a good coach. The importance of understanding your mindset as it relates to your business.

200: Celebrating Episode 200! Let Go of What It Looks Like! Apr 10, 2017
    Show notes

There have been many lessons along this journey of creating the Support is Sexy podcast! Throughout it all, the greatest lesson has been that you have to learn to let go. As much as we have a vision, have a plan, have goals, there has to be a part of you that is flexible, that is able to be open to the way the path leads you.

In this episode, in addition to celebrating the milestone of reaching episode 200 of the podcast (yes!), I share the things that we let hold us hostage as we embark on our journeys throughout business and throughout life. It's time to let go!

199: Start Where You Are, Use What You Have, Do What You Can Apr 07, 2017
    Show notes

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."~Arthur Ashe, tennis legend, social activist.

This is one of my favorite quotes, so much so that I have it framed and on my bookshelf in my office. It's something I go back to often, especially when I'm in a period of transition or launching something new or going into unfamiliar territory and feeling fear about inadequacy. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I break down this inspiring quote and talk about how you can use it to move forward with confidence in your business and your life during those times of transitions.
