Even writing this story makes me a bit uncomfortable because I’m extremely shy! If you know a shy person, think about their behavior then multiply it by fifteen. That’s me. I was so shy that I avoided everyone. If guests came to my house, I’d run to my room and lock myself in there until they left. My parents never bothered trying to change me though – they just accepted me for who I was and I was thankful for that.

When I was homeless, I sort of walked around the city instead of staying in one spot too long. I collected cans and bottles that I could get a little money for, and sometimes I got lucky enough to find something sharp, so I could cut my shaggy hair. On the day it all began, I was walking at night to the spot where I usually slept, but there were a couple teenagers messing around there. They were painting stuff on the wall. I knew I looked pretty scary, and they didn't know I was only a few years older than them, so I started running full speed at them and waving my arms like crazy, shouting incoherencies.

My intelligence defined me. People referred to me as ‘the smart one’ before they even learnt my name - Sandy. Because of this, I was always sent to the class for gifted students. But even those classes were too simple for me. In the fourth grade I was already doing college level courses in Science and Engineering. Easy Peasy!
