Healing Through Rest: Creating Balance for Your Nervous System [Solo Episode] Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever struggled to truly feel rested no matter how much sleep or downtime you get? If so, this episode is for you.

There’s a lot of messaging encouraging us to rest and be soft. But what should we do if we’re trying to take it easy, but still don’t feel rested? What even is rest? I’m closing out our Modalities of Healing series with a solo episode about how we can heal through rest, and what our minds and bodies need to feel rested (in addition to adequate sleep).

With so much happening in the world, it can be natural to have a “tired but wired” feeling when we’re constantly on alert. This episode explores what rest is on a physiological level, and shares techniques we can use to start feeling more rested to support our healing.

    I also talk about…

    • Your “fight or flight” and “rest and digest” systems, and how they work together.
    • Habits and techniques to help you feel more rested.
    • How to create better mind-body synergy.
    • Defining what it means to be “soft” for yourself.
    • The importance of taking breaks when needed.

Healing Through Nature with Toyin Ajayi of Outdoorsy Black Women Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

Nature is not a nice to have, it really is a must-have for physical health and longevity. Studies show that being in nature reduces feelings of isolation and promotes calm. For this episode, we are joined by Toyin Ajayi, the founder of Outdoorsy Black Women, which is a community for Black women to connect, celebrate, and open our minds to an outdoorsy lifestyle. Toyin is an entrepreneur, community builder, and creative who is helping Black women connect with nature and one another through her safe space that embodies positivity, celebration, and resources.

Toyin explains how it is possible to heal through our relationship with nature, and your idea of healing can shift over time. And nature doesn’t have to mean going in the woods. Healing Through Community: Why You Don’t Need to Be Fully Healed to Be Loved [Solo Episode] Jun 14, 2022
    Show notes

For many of us, hurt oftentimes happens in relationship to other people. Therefore, healing needs to happen in community as well. For the halfway point of our healing series, I’m exploring a statement that was introduced to us in last week’s episode — that healing often happens in community.

In this solo episode, I’m examining why being in community is such a significant, effective healing modality, why we don’t need to be perfectly healed to be loved, and ways we can cultivate healing in our immediate and broader communities.

    I also talk about…

    • The Summer Solstice Journaling Reset, a 5-day journaling challenge.
    • Why healing is not a prerequisite for receiving love or support.
    • How being in a supportive community can be incredibly therapeutic.
    • Why being in community is an effective healing modality.
    • Ways we can cultivate healing in our relationships and communities.

How Creativity Impacts Your Health + Overcoming Perfectionism with AJ Clarke of Soul Rehab May 10, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever referred to yourself as a perfectionist? Have you ever felt like perfectionism holds you back from expressing yourself creatively? I know I can relate to both.

The truth is, creativity is not a gift that only a select few have. It's a skill we can all cultivate. And the outcome of creative expression isn’t where the magic is – it’s the act of being creative itself. That’s because creativity is a vital part of health and well-being that isn’t talked about nearly enough. According to research, healthy creative expression is linked to better mental and physical well-being outcomes including higher levels of optimism and improved immune response. But for perfectionists, it can be hard to let go and let ourselves be students.

Our guest today is AJ Clarke, and our conversation is so special. AJ is a creative marketing agency owner, wife, and creative director behind Soul Rehab. She’s had an eye-opening journey learning how to release feelings of perfectionism and the pressure to over-achieve to pursue a creative career.

In addition to her work as a marketer, she realized that the “self-love” space was full of well-intentioned but surface-level endeavors that didn’t tell you how to overcome, but that just told you that you should. Soul Rehab is birthed from the most vulnerable of spaces – the fiery place of healing.

    We Also Talk About…

    • How creativity impacts your health.
    • Ways you can incorporate more creativity into your life.
    • Learning how to detach creative expression from the final product.
    • Advice for navigating perfectionism when it feels unsafe to not overachieve.
    • Building self-care communities that are rooted in vulnerability.
