SDH157: Learn How to Be Comfortable with the Discomfort of Being an Entrepreneur with Erin Bagwell, Founder of Dream Girl May 18, 2017
    Show notes

What has brought you courage and strength? Have you ever thought of blending it with your personal brand? What would that manifest into? A product, a business, a space?

After dealing with sexual harassment in her workplace, feminism erased Erin Bagwell’s insecurities and feelings of invisibility. She started reading feminist journals and blogs and decided to create her own, Feminist Wednesday, that provides women like her a forum to share their stories; as well as a platform for women who have overcome those situations and regained their confidence and found success. She became so obsessed and empowered by these women, that she quit her job at the ad agency, and started a kick starter to produce the documentary, Dream Girl, that tackled gender issues in the corporate world and acted as a visual medium for some of the women of Feminist Wednesday.

It took her 6 months to get her kick starter off the ground, but within 30 days she had reached her goal of $100,000.

Originally, she thought that it would resonate with strong females in Fortune 500 companies, but found that her documentary scared them. She said they weren’t ready to discuss gender issues in the workplace and thought it would turn off incoming and existing Millennial employees. However, she took pride in the fact that her film was so powerful, that it created discomfort in that very ecosystem.

Her documentary was embraced by Influencers, people who were active in their community, such as mentors, and women in charge of uplifting women organizations.

Dream Girl premiered at the White House in May of 2016, and since its release to the public that following June, it has been seen in 81 different countries.

Stick around and hear more about how Erin turned a soul-sucking situation into motivation to challenge societal norms with art!

    In this episode you will…

Know what avenues of fundraising and investing to take when building a business, product, or kick starter
Understand how to stretch and work within your budget
Figure out how to disassociate yourself with your product enough so you can monetize it
Learn to be comfortable with the discomfort of being an entrepreneur
Find the best way of distributing your product
Know how to shift your product and business model in accordance to a target audience change
    INSIGHTS

“Sometimes the cards are stacked against you, when you have all old white male, suit wearing superiors. Feminism kind of gave me the tools to dissect that and understand that just because I’m a young woman, doesn’t mean I’m not of value or worth to a company.” –Erin Bagwell

“I became so obsessed with the women I was meeting on Feminist Wednesday. The entrepreneur’s journeys about quitting their jobs and running a company and being successful seemed so romantic to me…I was at such a cross road in my life where I was really open and ready to receive a big idea...I had been so creatively stifled at work, so I was ready to dive all in, and do a kick starter.” –Erin Bagwell

“As artists, we feel this shame and this guilt around selling something we’ve poured our heart and souls into. And in the beginning I felt a lot of discomfort around money and charging for it, because it felt so close to me…it took a couple of months for me to get over and for me to view the film as a product, and as something we need to monetize.” –Erin Bagwell.

“I have no idea what I’m walking into day-to-day, or what’s going to happen, who’s going to need me…actually letting go has been something I continue to work on and think about and try to get better at.” –Erin Bagwell

SDH156: How to be Strategic When Scaling Your Business with Rosalyn Arntzen May 15, 2017
    Show notes

Did you start your own business and realize you never wanted to be an entrepreneur again? However, did you find yourself in those same shoes?

Rosalyn Arntzen, founder and CEO of Amaxra, Inc., a computer support and services company, originally founded a training business in the 90's; but the stress and pressure of being her own boss was overwhelming at the time. So she went to the corporate world, and started working for Unisys UK, a global technology company. She was then transferred to Microsoft, and was apart of the Windows XP launch in the US in 2001.

By the mid-2000's, she had become the Executive Speech Writer for the VP. The role itself was intense and she found herself burnt out and decided to take a break.

She went back to Microsoft as a vendor, but found herself as the head of her own business, once more in 2007. Amaxra focuses on helping other companies decide what technologies to invest in, and make sure that their staff is fully utilizing them. Another aspect of the company is business management, and provide other companies with staffing solutions.

As Amaxra has grown, Rosalyn has had to resolve her own staffing solutions, as well. Like all entrepreneurs, when Amaxra first started, she fulfilled all the roles and handled all the tasks associated with running a business. Within a year, she realized that it was too much to handle, but instead of backing out of the business, she passed the duties to people she felt could handle them better.

But this proved easier said than done, and still wanted to have control of a lot of the projects, and departments. She soon realized that she had to let some of it go, because she wasn't taking care of herself and was surviving off of 4-5 hours of sleep (which she notes is better than 2-3).
In order to be the most effective leader, she had to improve her health, relinquish some of her control, and allow her leaders to be just that.

She soon learned she had to be strategic with who she hired. Not only did she want someone who could do their job effectively and productively, she wanted them to be align with the morals and values of the company, and be respectful to employees. An employees personal attribution and attitude proved to be the key to a successful and growing company, and she began to choose quality over quantity in order to steer Amaxra in the right direction.

Tune in as we hear more about how Rosalyn developed her team!

    In this episode you will...

Know what leadership style works best for you and your team based off of previous experiences
Understand when to pass a portion of your company to someone else because they have better knowledge of it
Knowhow to take care of yourself so you can be a productive and effective boss/leader, as well as a healthy human being
Figure out how to deal with people and employees who aren't aligned with your business objectives and asses what your ideal employee is
Not be in a rush to hire a staff and choose employees who will be productive and healthy fits for your business
Find out how to take your business to market and develop the services your business will provide

SDH155: The Power of Your Intuition + Cycle Syncing + Past 10 Months with Amanda Boleyn May 11, 2017
    Show notes

Hi guys! Happy Thursday! I’m so excited to dive into today’s solocast with you. I’m sharing how incredibly powerful the female intuition is, cycle syncing and diving deeper into the past 10 months of life.

As I’ve shared in previous solocasts, the past year has been one for growth, pivoting and not feeling like myself. Up until a month and a half ago I found myself in this fog like state, I was emotionally all over, felt lost, found it a struggle to chose happiness (because it truly is a choice), found myself being envious of others, lack of motivation or desire to do anything. I stopped reading, I barely listened to podcasts and didn’t have a strong appetite for personal development. THIS was when I knew something was extremely off. I’ve always been hungry for growth and at that point I didn’t care. Some periods of time were better (and easier) than others but still I knew I wasn’t myself.

With the help of WomanCode (thanks to @leeFromamerica), it was the first book I read and it made me realize just HOW powerful our bodies are as women from leveraging the power of our intuition, cycle syncing (coordinating activities and workouts with the phases of our cycle for maximum performance) and just how important it is to stabilize our blood sugar for consistent energy.

Also, every time I record a solocast I always get a little self conscious that I’m all over the place with my thoughts so A) I’m working on getting better B) Thanks for still tuning in :)

Lastly, I’m working on a project and need your help! If you have taken the LEAP, left your corporate job to pursue entrepreneurship or if the podcast has inspired you in some way, I want to hear from you! Click below.

It tis meant to provide tools, resources, and a community for women business owners alike to connect and support each other.

And so, she decided to be the one to make one. She launched Belong in September of 2015, and by it's third issue, it was already picked up by Barnes & Noble.

Even though the publication has a digital medium, she prides herself on the print form of the magazine, with vivid images, unique finishes, page weight, and as she put it, life-giving content.

Her magazines are so visually stimulating, that they have even been the subject of Instagram hashtags, Pinterest tags, and used as decorative home pieces.

From there she became the Managing Editor for a blog in 2011, and started a Twitter Chat so successful that a producer at the Today Show got a hold of her, and she appeared on the show.

With her love for TV ignited, she was hired to be the Digital Producer of LIVE with Kelly & Michael at the age of 24. SDH152: How to Build a Business Based on Relationships with Becky Galvez May 01, 2017
    Show notes

Does entrepreneurship run in your family? Has your entrepreneurial journey been more challenging than you anticipated?

For Becky Galvez, CEO of Shop4Ties, her gift for gab, and love for connecting and helping others was in her DNA. Becky inherited Shop4Ties from her father, and what they both loved about their business was getting to know their customers to the point that they became family.

Shop4Ties is a custom neckwear company that specializes in ties, bowties, scarves, and as of a few years ago, Hawaiian shirts. The company was founded by Becky's father, Arnie Kapp, in their family's basement in 1982. Becky's earliest memory of the family business was the sounds of her dad plugging away on the phone and their fax machine going off. Working with the entrepreneurial landscape of the early 1980's, he advertised everywhere he could to get the name out there. He also negotiated manufacturing deals with factories in Korea, which was not the easiest task, due to the use and price of calling cards and level of communication needed for smooth operation. With the invention of Internet, Shop4Ties became more accessible anywhere.

Becky didn't join the company until January of 2011, when she returned to America after working as a Spanish teacher in Chile for seven years at an international school. Before joining the company, she dabbled in the tie industry with her e-commerce site Silk Sensation, which sold fashionable silk ties. However, she based it out of South America, and didn't analyze the market. She assumed that since her dad's business flourished, so would hers. Unfortunately, that was not the case and she was left with 10,000 silk ties in her apartment.

She decided to learn from the best, and worked at her dad's company stuffing envelopes at a desk and watching him perform the day-to-day tasks of running an established business. When he was diagnosed with cancer she had to take more of the reins.

Since then, she continues to successfully grow the business and uphold her father's rapport with his loyal customer base and partners.

Get comfy and listen to the endearing story of how Shop4Ties came to be and learn more about Becky's genuine love for people and connecting.

    In this episode you will...

Learn to be OK with not knowing everything
Know how to grow your business in innovative ways
Discover how to turn your customers and business partners into family and friends
Understand the basics of international manufacturing
Know how to be transparent with your business
Find what aspect of your business you're best at
    INSIGHTS

"We don't meet most of our clients; we talk on the phone with them. And we can talk with someone for 10 years and know their whole life story but have never met them." -Becky Galvez

"I'm not just going to be your Al Bundy of the tie world. I want to know about you and I want to help you with things. It's about these deep rooted relationships." -Becky Galvez

"One of the biggest things companies need to invest in is showing appreciation for your staff. People just want to be appreciated for what they do." -Becky Galvez

SDH151: Discovering Your Story and Building Your Highest Being with Sarah Anne Stewart Apr 27, 2017
    Show notes

Have you been back and forth with dieting your whole life? Has body confidence been an issue that you've dealt with, but never felt comfortable discussing? What factors led you to feel as though you needed to change your image to be happy?

Well Sarah Anne Stewart, a Holistic Health coach, wants to get to the bottom of it. But she doesn't want to just tell you to eat your greens and exercise. She wants to get to the source.

Sarah became a model at the young age of 14, and was so for about 10 years. While a model, she developed an eating disorder that nearly killed her and left her hospitalized for some time. All she could think about was how this could happen to her and where did it stem from.

Growing up her father was heavily into meditation, holistic health, reprogramming subconscious beliefs, and even cured himself of terminal cancer through proper nutrition.

First she realized that she needed to truly change her diet and stick with it. While her health improved, her anxiety and depression remained. She soon figured out that she needed to change her thought process as well, and improve her mental health.

She discovered that a lot of her confidence and body issues stemmed from her modeling career, and how from the get-go something didn't feel right. The constant bombardment of body image awareness and pressure to be "perfect" according to societal standards had left her drained mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

But, by finding the root of her problems, she was able to work through them and forgive them. This enabled her to shed some heavy internal baggage, and genuinely begin to change her thought process, which allowed her to reach her highest being.

She wanted to help other women on their journey, and find their story as well, so they can obtain overall health and mental clarity, too.

Relax and enjoy as we hear more about Sarah's touching and inspiring story to finding who she is and loving her soul.

    In this episode you will...

Understand how to become physically and mentally healthy
Discover the story behind your body issues and/or weight gain
Know how to find happiness in the body that you have
Feel comfortable having an open discussion about your insecurities
Figure out how to achieve alignment mentally, emotionally, and spiritually
Learn to have patience when building your business
    INSIGHTS

"I need to talk about it. It needs to be an open discussion...30 million people in this country do have eating disorders and every 62 minutes someone dies from one." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"We really need to look within and take that responsibility. And when that piece is taken, I see change literally over night it's incredible." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"We can go from diet to diet... or we can intuitively look within and say what is going on with me. What is the place in my childhood that I need to forgive?" - Sarah Anne Stewart

"Your weight is speaking to you and you're holding onto it for a reason, and we have to feel grateful for that reason. It's telling me something....what is the story of your weight." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"When you want to be fully alive and you want to be completely content and happy with where you are in your life, you're going to do everything you can to be healthy. If you're not there's a reason...and we accept the reason and we move through it, work on it, we forgive it." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"I need my own help. I need to get my own coaches. I need to figure this out and I'm gonna do everything I can to really heal this disconnect in my mind." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"My truth, my highest being, my source, my power, who I am as a human and a soul isn't connected to this physical body. I had to learn that to really create myself." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"Now I'm so in alignment with my truth and what I want to teach and my story and I have the confidence to speak about it. I feel so proud and honored to have these conversations now." - Sarah Anne Stewart

"That's what the world really needs right now. It needs people to step up and say 'This is what I'm going through. It sucks. It's hard.' Even as a entrepreneur...it's tough having this social pressure and these conditioned norms...but I'm going to help change them." - Sarah Anne Stewart

SDH150: How to Create Your Dream Product with the Co-Founders of Birdies Apr 24, 2017
    Show notes

Have you noticed a need for the product in your daily life for decades? Are you tired of waiting for someone else to create it? Do you want to be that person?

The Co-founders of Birdies, Marisa Sharkey and Bianca Gates, took action against this constant void that they faced. For them it was a fashionable pair of slippers that they could wear around the house, entertain in, or wear in other people's houses. They were tired of having to go barefoot, having to wear their socks, or slippers more designed for their pj's. They wanted something that wouldn't compromise their stylish outfits, but also compliment their lives as working mothers on the go.

Upon finding that other women felt the same, and seeing that no one had really addressed this problem, they gave their idea a go. The two began to think about what they wanted in a slipper, and wanted more than just a cute slipper. They wanted to create a slipper with arch support to create a smooth transition from heel or hard flat to home, and slippers that conformed to their body temperatures. To adhere to the latter, most of their styles come with the option of being quilted or faux shearling lined.

Neither Marisa or Bianca came from a entrepreneurial or manufacturing background. But by working their networks, and watching YouTube videos on how to make shoes, they were able to make their dream shoe into a reality.

Almost every woman introduced to the shoe love it, and through word of mouth, their business sky rocketed and they realized they had a sustainable and successful business on their hands.

Sit and relax as you hear more about their Bianca and Marisa's story!

SDH149: How to Show Up, Get the Work Done and Get Yourself from Point A to Point B with Co-founders of Oars + Alps Apr 20, 2017
    Show notes

Are you seeing a void in the market place that is opposite of yours? Do you feel you have the knowledge, passion, and drive to fix it yourself?

Mia Saini-Duchnowski, and Laura Cox, Co-founders of Oars + Alps, did extensive market research, and based off what they found, most women are the gatekeepers to men's skin care products. According to the data Mia and Laura collected, this can start as early as puberty for most men, when their mother's buy them their first skin products; and follows them to adulthood with their spouses or significant others.

Mia and Laura can personally attest to this latter notion, because the urge to start Oars + Alps began when their husbands would use their skin care products. (Yup! We've been in the same boat ;) They then found themselves replenishing their own products faster, and women's skin care products can cost around 5x more than men's, said Mia. But also because men's and women's skin are different and their products serve different purposes.

So the two created a product for the active man that craves simplicity, authenticity, quality, and ease in their products. Named after their husband's love for rowing and snowboarding, they wanted their brand to represent that ath-leisure lifestyle, that allows their product and message to travel with their target consumer. The brand includes three products that all have natural ingredients, are TSA friendly, and are available for subscription service. This allows customers to choose the frequency of their deliveries, and not have to think about re-ordering.

Come join us as we hear Mia tell us more about the extensive branding and story behind Oars + Alps!

"We didn't just want to create a skin care line. We...[wanted] to create a community, a sense of feeling and being...that it was a movement." -Mia Saini-Duchnowski

"You're convincing a lot of big people...to take a bet on you. You're going to be their smallest and lowest priority. And you need to convince them that you're their number one priority...on the same minute of the same day for things to go right." -Mia Saini-Duchnowskia

SDH148: How to Develop a Passion That Aligns with You with Dr. Gabby Pelicci Apr 17, 2017
    Show notes

Are you able to see potential in others to be entrepreneurs? Do you want to help them grow into the leaders you know they can be?

The ability to see potential and desire to help is what sparked one of the businesses of today's guest, Dr. Gabrielle Pelicci, who is a Wellness Business Coach for Women in Wellness Career Training, and a leading expert as a Holistic Health Professor. Growing up with her father, who was a physician and constantly treated with antibiotics and other Western medicines, she realized she simply didn't feel good as a whole in her college years. Her diet was poor, as well as her physical health and her mindset as she coped with stress and anxiety.

So she began delving deeply into the holistic health scene and fell in love. She even wanted to create a career out of it and help others discover the wonders of the field; gained a Ph.D. in holistic health practices. She then began teaching Mind-Body Medicine and Holistic Health at universities across the country for about 10 years.

As a professor, she noticed a lot of her graduating students, who showed immense drive and leadership potential, were having trouble becoming entrepreneurs. She decided she wanted to help them too. She also wanted to help the students who may not exactly know what business they wanted to start in holistic health, but had an immense passion for the craft. She created a coaching business, Women in Wellness Club, for these budding healers and allowed them to have a community of likeminded individuals and resources to start their careers, but also continued to help people who wanted a healthier lifestyle change.

Join us as we hear Dr. Gabby share her tips and her journey in healing at the source!

    In this episode you will...

Learn how to inspire lifestyle change with your business
