Seahawks Forever w/ Dan Viens

Latest Episodes:

Are the Seahawks waiting until 2025 to address the QB position? Feb 22, 2024

Show notes

So much QB talk surrounding the Seattle Seahawks! Should they keep riding with Geno Smith or turn to Drew Lock? Or should they go all out to move up and grab one of the top prospects at the position in this years NFL Draft?

Or...... should they wait until 2025?!

"But Dan, that's CRAZY!!! Next year's class doesn't look that great!"

Is that so?

In this episode I'll break down every NFL team to determine which ones are hunting QB's this year, and then show you all the available options at the position (there's an unusually high number of them!) Then, we'll look at which teams may still be looking for answers at the position in 2025 and match that up with next year's potential draft class.

You may be surprised what you see and hear.

Are Seahawks ready to win under Mike Macdonald, or rebuild? With Dayna O'Gorman Feb 21, 2024

Show notes

Dayna O'Gorman is BACK! My former Field Gulls co-host, who you've also seen and heard on Our Turf and Real Hawk Talk, joins me today to catch up for the first time since right before Pete Carroll was fired (literally RIGHT before!)

I'll get her thoughts on what's happened since then, how she views this young coaching staff, what (kind of) scares her about it, and so much more....

Geno, yay or nay?
Should we expect a different M.O. from John Schneider now without Pete around?
How far away are the Seahawks from being able to compete with the Chiefs and other elite teams?

Analyzing the Seahawks Offense with Matty Brown Feb 20, 2024

Show notes

Now that we know who's going to be coordinating the offense for the Seattle Seahawks, we can start to speculate what it might look like on the field. And who better to do that than NFL analyst, writer, podcaster, and defensive coordinator of the London Olympians Matty Brown!?

Matty shares his unique insight on what he's seeing from Ryan Grubb's offenses on tape, and how that might translate to Geno Smith (or someone else?), DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, JSN, etc.......

And of course I HAD to ask him about the Seahawks newest defensive coordinator, and fellow countryman Aden Durde, who Matty shares a very distinct connection with.

360 degree offseason view with Field Gulls managing editor Mookie Alexander Feb 16, 2024

Show notes

Now that most of the coaching staff is set, and a decision has been made (for now) on Geno Smith's roster status, it's time to start getting on with the rest of the offseason. With the NFL Combine, free agency and the draft on the horizon, there are matters of roster building to be addressed.

Who better to join the show to discuss these things than Mookie Alexander, who runs the outstanding Seahawks website Field Gulls.

Mookie shares his thoughts on the coaching staff Mike Macdonald is putting together, which direction he wants the Hawks to go in the upcoming draft, and tries to tackle the question of just why so many fans are against the idea of Smith remaining the team's starting QB... and so much more!

Geno stays, Coordinators introduced, Grubb steals the show Feb 15, 2024

Show notes

It was a big news day at the VMAC as news broke that Geno Smith's status on the Seahawks roster wouldn't be changing, just as the team was getting ready to introduce their new coordinators.

Once the press conference started, it was new offensive coordinator who stood out as the days highlight. Discussing his offensive philosophy, how the whole thing went down with Alabama, and his excitement to work with the Seahawks skill position players, it was evident that Grubb has been planning for this move for a long time.

Show notes

Whether you're a believer in Geno Smith's talent or not, you've no doubt got your eye on this Friday, as the Seattle Seahawks and general manager John Schneider have a big decision on their hands.

Smith's $12.7 million base salary for 2024 becomes fully guaranteed if he's still on the roster Friday, February 16th. But this isn't simply a question of whether to cut or keep Geno..... there are options!

Today, I outline 4 of them, and give you my thoughts on which one I think is most likely.

Show notes

SO MUCH to talk about with Seahawks reporter Corbin Smith today. The Locked on Seahawks host and All Seahawks lead writer shares his insight into the hire of offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and how he thinks his offense will adapt from college to the NFL.

And that's not all....

Impressions of Mike Macdonald's first radio coaches show
Breaking down the Ryan Grubb hiring process
His gut feeling on which way the team is leaning with a key contract date coming up Friday for Geno Smith
Drew Lock still in the picture?
And I ask Corbin what he thinks the chances are of the Seahawks re-signing Leonard Williams, and how much Macdonald might value free agent LB Jordyn Brooks.....you don't want to miss his answers.

Seahawks secure Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, AND get their OL coach too? Feb 10, 2024

Show notes

We FINALLY get to talk about Ryan Grubb as your new offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, because it's happening. And not only is Grubb coming back to Seattle, but he's reportedly bringing offensive line coach Scott Huff with him as well.

How does this move speak to John Schneider's approach this off-season?
What does this mean for the Seahawks skill position players?
Does this eliminate or enhance the need to keep Geno Smith?
Can his offense translate to the NFL?
Which former UW player would be the best fit for Seattle in the draft?

And MUCH more....

Seahawks hire Defensive Coordinator, but search for OC drags on.... Feb 09, 2024

Show notes

Another "outside the box" hire!!

Aden Durde is your new Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator under newly-appointed head coach Mike Macdonald, and he has an extremely intriguing background.

I'll go over his resume with you and then we'll talk about the still-vacant and ever-important OC position.

With Chip Kelly OUT of the race now, where does that leave the search? There's a very interesting name I overlooked in my last show, serving a key role on the Kansas City coaching staff. Could this search be shaping up just like the head coaching process did, with candidates waiting on offers while John Schneider makes sure to turn over every single possible rock to find the right guy? Is that guy coaching in the Super Bowl this Sunday? And what about Ryan Grubb..... is he still in play?
