    54. An Ugly Design Career with Trevor Alexander Apr 14, 2022
    Show notes

If you’re not in the top 5% of bee catchers in the forest, you had better be using honey.

    Wait… software.

As software engineers and designers we often default to the same, traditional method when job hunting. We often feel that our careers can only ever be as good as our portfolio or resume.

So, we spend countless hours perfecting our resumes. Or if you’re unlucky enough to be a designer looking for work, you need to also make sure you’ve written well thought, captivating case studies for your portfolio.

But what if we didn’t have to do that? What if, instead, we focused on our network to help us find our next job?

This week, we talk with Trevor Alexander, author of the new book, An Ugly Design Career, where he discusses uncommon ways to build an amazing design career where your opportunities come from a trusted network, not endless interviews and portfolio revamps.

Stick around until the end for a very special treat.

    Topics:
    • 04:30 – The idea behind the book.
    • 05:57 – Focus on building your network
    • 08:05 – A B player will always get more jobs than an A player everyone hates
    • 10:41 – Your reputation precedes you; good or bad
    • 11:28 – Unless you’re in the top 5% of your field, you can’t be a jackass
    • 12:22 – How do fresh designers build a reputation?
    • 15:40 – People will never forget how you made them feel
    • 18:53 – Just don’t be an asshole!
    • 21:14 – What do we replace our portfolios or resumes with?
    • 22:24 – Find your circle of influence
    • 30:06 – Your reputation is important in really large companies too
    • 36:37 – Don’t let little details get in the way of the big picture
    • 37:46 – You’ll get brought into more strategic conversations if you’re not shooting everything down
    • 40:53 – Tenacity over tone
    • 43:37 – Everything you need to be successful you learned in Kindergarten
    • 52:45 – Hugo and the Impossible Thing

    About Trevor
Trevor has been an active designer in the tech industry for over sixteen years. During that time he’s been a part of three successfully sold start-ups and has had responsibilities ranging from solitary designer, to design lead, to VP of Product. He’s had the pleasure of working with, hiring, and managing many designers during the course of his career.
He’s made amazing bonds with some great colleagues, mainly through the actions prescribed in his writing. Fortuitously, he has never needed a portfolio or resume during his career as those colleagues were always eager to bring him along on their adventures.
He’s just finished writing a book titled “An Ugly Design Career” which looks to provide some unusual or unorthodox tactics for designers to help grow their careers, including “Design Through Ambiguity”, “The Best Isn’t Always The Best”, and “Developers Get You More Work Than Other Designers.”

    52. Culture Crusaders Mar 17, 2022
    Show notes

You’ve likely been there. Leadership announces a new “transformation” team is coming in to help change the way we work. It could be digital transformation, agile transformation, cultural transformation, it doesn’t matter.

What leadership thinks they’re saying and what the teams hear them saying aren’t always aligned. This can lead to many problems and ultimately, many times, not much actual transformation at all.

If you’re just starting out on this transformation journey, just remember that this is not something that can happen overnight, especially if the team has a very well-established culture and certain ways of doing things. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

This week, Derek and Jeremy discuss transformation inside of organizations, what to keep an eye out for, and how you might be able to help make your team culture better over time.

    Topics:
    • 05:07 – Transformation implies it’s a relatively quick transition
    • 06:53 – Are we assuming teams are ready to change?
    • 10:28 – It’s like we’re addicted to processes that don’t work.
    • 12:16 – Bringing in “transformers” implies the team is wrong.
    • 15:28 – Be the one who asks questions when no one else knows what is going on.
    • 20:07 – What if we don’t want to be the transformation crusaders?
    • 21:13 – What if we can figure out the culture is bad before we join?
    • 23:05 – Don’t be afraid to interview the interviewer
    • 28:42 – There are a few treatments for an organization
    • 32:52 – Managers should be focused on making their teams as safe as can be

    50. Lessons From a Tech Lead with Tyler Hawkins Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

The logical career progression for many software engineers or UX designers is to work their way up to the team lead, sometimes followed by a manager role. Think of a team lead like management light. Some of the responsibilities without the title, pay, or HR headaches.

Since new team leads are often new to official leadership positions it’s common for people in these roles to succumb to comment pitfalls like focusing too much on doing the work they did previously instead of focusing on mentorship and support. Or focusing too much on their definition of right that easily leads to micromanaging their team.

This week, Derek and Jeremy chat with Adobe Sr Software Engineer and author, Tyler Hawkins about some lessons he’s learned as a technical lead, how to avoid micromanaging, and some common dysfunctions of software teams.

    Topics:
    • 05:41 – Tech lead is like management without the baggage
    • 08:42 – The value of a tech lead is their experience
    • 09:49 – What makes a good tech lead?
    • 11:03 – Time management is a huge struggle for new tech leads
    • 12:06 – Maker’s schedule vs Manager’s schedule
    • 14:00 – What makes a bad tech lead?
    • 18:23 – Don’t fall into the micromanagement trap
    • 20:36 – Signs you’re micromanaging
    • 22:31 – Overcoming the micromanager tendency
    • 26:55 – 5 dysfunctions of a team
