    Show notes

News of all the recent software layoffs has given us flashbacks to 2020. This recent news has caused us both to contemplate what life after software might be like. Would we have it in us to find another tech job? Or would we get out of the software game completely?

If you have been affected by the recent layoffs, we empathize. We’ve been there and we understand how stressful it can be. Our best advice is to remember that this will eventually pass, and you’ll be stronger for it. In the meantime, if there is anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to reach out. After all, if you listen to the show you can’t be that bad at your job. ?

As software teams, we’re no strangers to problems. They may never be as big as Derek’s problem with empty packs of basketball cards, but they can still be major headaches for us and our team.

Luckily, Derek has some tips on how to solve problems when they arise. Even though he still isn’t sure about what to do with his Franz Wagner basketball card.

    60. It’s Not the Size of the Team, It’s How You Use It Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

If you’ve ever had the opportunity of working for both a large and small organization throughout your career, you may have been shocked by how different the two teams operate.

While this isn’t true for all organizations, generally speaking, smaller teams tend to be able to hire faster, make decisions faster, release features faster, and pivot faster. They tend to be flatter and individuals generally have the freedom to do the things they think need to be done, when they need to be done. Most of the team tends to understand the strategic vision and larger context.

Large teams tend to be the opposite. It takes a long time and lots of meetings to get a consensus. They tend to be top-down. The people on the ground tend to have less control over what they are able to do. And the people on the ground down always have insight into larger contexts or decisions that will eventually make it down to their level.

Generally speaking, quickly adding more people to a team does not automatically increase productivity. In fact, the opposite is true. Scaling without a lot of planning tends to have the opposite effect, and may actually slow you do dramatically.

This week, Derek and Jeremy discuss the differences between large and small teams. They offer some insights into what teams might want to look out for as they grow.

    Topics:
    • 03:48 – Kevin Smith managed to make Clerks with a tiny team
    • 08:11 – The larger the team the more lines of communication
    • 09:06 – Change management is harder for larger teams
    • 11:35 – A lot of this depends on the leadership
    • 14:30 – How quickly can your team make decisions?
    • 14:53 – It feels natural to give larger teams more priorities
    • 19:03 – The Three-legged Stool is easier to maintain on smaller teams
    • 24:51 – Larger teams tend to segregate departments
    • 29:00 – Middle Managers have a large role to play in larger organizations
    • 29:33 – The Large Team’s Embarrassment Paradox

    56. Don’t Treat Your Users Like Lab Rats May 13, 2022
    Show notes

No one likes to feel like they’re being used. When we build software and don’t validate it until we push everything to production, there’s a good chance our users will feel like they are part of an experiment.

In this episode, we discuss the many opportunities to validate along the way and how you might go about making sure the thing you release to your full user base is what they really want or need.

The fact is, there are many ways to validate your product throughout the product life cycle. If you’re waiting to validate your assumptions until the final release, there’s a good chance you are treating your users like a bunch of lab rats. And there’s an equally good chance they won’t like it.

    Topics:
    • 02:05 – If software is an experiment, who are our lab rats?
    • 04:52 – Make sure it’s a controlled experiment.
    • 06:08 – Make sure you build in a way that allows iteration
    • 07:30 – There are many ways we can validate our apps.
    • 11:25 – We need to validate early and often.
    • 12:55 – Don’t make your users feel like lab rats.
    • 15:08 – If you can recover quickly, users won’t feel like lab rats.
    • 15:28 – Allow your users to opt into new features.
    • 18:00 – Try to limit collateral damage when making big changes.
    • 18:37 – Investing in dynamic content might seem like a huge investment, but it will pay dividends.
    • 19:34 – How do we measure success?
