Thank you for joining us for Sermons+! In this podcast, you can expect three things: a summary of the past weekend's sermon, answers to some of the text-in questions from the sermon, as well as the sermon itself. Good disciples ask questions, so keep the questions coming!

Sermon: A Long Long Time Ago God Rested

    Preacher: Pastor Sam Sessa

Text: Genesis 2:1-2 and Mark 2:23-3:6

    Text-In Questions:

    1) Is there a special day of the week that is considered the Sabbath? Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, etc. Or is the Sabbath the 7th day?

    2) Does the Sabbath have to be a weekend day (especially if you're clergy or a health care worker)? If not, does it have to be the same day of the week...ie, every Wednesday to make it the 7th day? Or can you select a day each week as your "personal Sabbath"?

    3) Why do we worship on Sunday instead of Saturday?

    4) Are ministers exempt from working on the Sabbath?

    5) A very devout Jewish (reformed I think) colleague once told me that the the current meaning of the Hebrew word for day used in Genesis is a 24 hour day but the meaning when Genesis was written was different. What do you think? My first thought is Peter's thousand year statement.

    6) In your sermon you said that Sabbath is a gift from God. Yet it is in the 10 Commandments. Are the 10 Commandments laws that we follow or gifts? They don't feel like gifts.

    7) How can I change my internal rhythm to a Sabbath rhythm?

    Communion | The Table | Episode 006 Jul 02, 2019
    Show notes

Every week in worship, we come together to share a meal with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Every week, we hear these words: "Take and eat, this is my body. Take and drink, this is my blood." Strange words that leave many of us with questions. Why does Jesus want us to eat him? Is it actually body and blood? That's just a metaphor, right?

In this podcast, Pastors Sam and Caleb talk about the Sacrament of Communion and how this is a meal of unity and love to be received for the forgiveness of our sins. Topics include promises, Lyft and Uber, transubstantiation, miracle math, recycling and the Sharing of the Peace. We also answer a few FAQs about Communion: 1) Who is allowed to distribute the elements? 2) If I visit a church that isn't Lutheran, should I take Communion? 3) Who can receive Communion at Redeemer? So grab a drink, pull up a seat, and join us at The Table as we talk about Communion.

    God Gave His Image | Sermons+ | Episode 002 Jun 28, 2019
    Show notes

Thank you for joining us for Sermons+! In this podcast, you can expect three things: a summary of the past weekend's sermon, answers to some of the text-in questions from the sermon, as well as the sermon itself. Good disciples ask questions, so keep the questions coming!

Sermon: A Long Long Time Ago God Gave His Image

    Preacher: Pastor Tim Runtsch

    Text: Genesis 1:14-31

    Listen to Redeemer's Sermons online!

    Text-In Questions:

    1) Why is it "us" in genesis 1:26? Why not "I"?

    2) God created Man and Woman in his image. God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man become a living being. Some say Man has body, soul and spirit; some say man has body and soul, both can be found in Bible. Then what is the soul and spirit? Is there any difference?

    3) An "image" is so much more than just what you see on the surface. So, what's the difference between "image" and "likeness" in the original Hebrew?

    4) In Genesis 1:29-30, it states the green plants with seeds are for food. Is it biblical that we should be vegetarians?

    5) How does being created "in the image of God" change the way we should view ourselves compared to viewing ourselves as "poor, miserable sinners" as the Lutheran liturgy says?

    6) Can you please clarify that the purpose of the 3/5 compromise was?

    Baptism | The Table | Episode 005 Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

Baptism is about so much more than just water. But why do we do it? What's the purpose? Why are babies baptized? Baptism is one of the most notable ways that God offers life-giving promises to us and welcomes us into His family. Rather than think about the pormises we make to God, what if we started to think about the promises that God makes to us?

In this podcast, Pastors Sam and Caleb talk about the Sacrament of Baptism and the promises that God has for us through the water and the word. We answer 3 main questions: What is a valid baptism? What does God promise to do in Baptism? Who can be baptized? Topics include cassette tapes, immersion, the Greek word baptizo, delicious Colorado water, the Chronicles of Narnia, adoption and circumcision. So grab a drink, pull up a seat, and join us at The Table as we talk about Baptism.

    Listen to Redeemer's Sermons online!

    Text-In Questions:

    1) Who wrote Genesis?

    2) In a society today where so many people believe in the "scientific" creation story, is there a way that both can exist together?

    3) When Genesis says, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth why is "heavens" plural and what description does the Bible give for God creating them?

    4) Why did God create something that He saw was good even though He knew that it would produce some pain and evil?

    5) Where are the angels in the scheme of creation? Already existing?

    6) Where did Satan come from? Why can't God get rid of him?

    7) Do you believe God is a "male"? Why assign gender to God?

    8) What is Redeemer's stance on protecting the environment and God's creation? Have you considered taking active steps such as installing solar panels on the church or reducing waste? Is there a "green committee"?

    Resurrection | The Table | Episode 004 Jun 18, 2019
    Show notes

Christianity is utterly dependent on one truth: Jesus Christ has risen from the dead. Nothing else matters if this statement is false. If Jesus didn't come back to life then all of Christianity is a waste of time. But we believe and know that Jesus has risen from the dead and as a result, that changes everything.

Join Pastors Sam and Caleb for what is their first recorded podcast as they talk about why the resurrection matters and how one day after we die, we too will be raised from the dead to live forever in eternity with our Savior. Topics include Jediism, Scientology (shhh), Apologetics, Types of Knowledge, the Grand Narrative, bowties, robes, and snakes. So grab a drink, pull up a seat, and join us at The Table as we talk about the Resurrection.

Main text being discussed is 1 Corinthians 15.

    Spiritual Gifts | The Table | Episode 003 Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

The Spirit of God had been promised to God's people for centuries and all throughout the Old Testament. On the feast of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit finally came. Ever since, the Holy Spirit has been acting in and through those who follow Jesus. The expression of the Holy Spirit is first and foremost, the existence of faith in Jesus Christ. Another expression is through Spiritual Gifts, unique giftings to help one love and serve their neighbor as well as expand the Kingdom of God. Spiritual Gifts are not for the glory of the individual, but the glory of God.

Join Pastors Sam and Caleb as they discuss what Spiritual Gifts are and are not and the purpose for which all believers have been given certain gifts. Spiritual Gifts are given to Jesus followers by the Holy Spirit living in us to equip, enable and empower us to love and serve others and expand God's Kingdom. Topics include golf, natural talents, gallbladders and speaking in tongues. So grab a drink, pull up a seat, and join us at The Table as we talk about Spiritual Gifts.

    Sexual Ethics | The Table | Episode 002 Jun 04, 2019
    Show notes

Often the Church is viewed as a regressive entity, calling for unrealistic expectations when it comes to human sexuality. On the topic of sex, the message from the church is that it's a gift reserved only for marriage so make sure you save yourself until then. The message from culture is one of transaction, consent and making sure that you get yours. Is there a better way to view love and sex?

Join Pastors Sam and Caleb as they talk with Dr. Jeff Mallinson, Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Concordia University in Irvine, CA and author of Sexy: The Quest for Erotic Virtue in Perplexing Times. At the core of the conversation is a discussion of what love is, the type of love God has for us and the love that we're called to demonstrate to the world. Topics also include purity culture, a system of Gospel-Law-Gospel, how to love our spouses better and even Dr. Dre. So, grab a drink, pull up a seat, and join us at The Table as we talk about Sexual Ethics.

    Suffering | The Table | 001 May 28, 2019
    Show notes

Why is there pain and brokeness in the world? If God is so good, why does he allow such suffering to take place? It seems like the headlines always include shootings, crime and death. Is there any hope in the world? Is God going to do something about all this brokeness?

Join Pastors Sam and Caleb as they talk with Dr. Bob Kolb, professor emeritus of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, about topics including Theodicy, the school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL and Free Will. We learn that the cross of Jesus is the best and only answer to the problem of suffering and that only through it, do we have hope in what is to come.
