BONUS: The Go-To Goal Setting Activity That Actually Works Jan 01, 2022
    Show notes

Raise your hand if you've made some new year resolutions already?! Spoiler alert - they don't work!

But you already know that... we've all been doing the New Year's Resolutions thing for years at this point. And honestly, they don't work because resolutions are often a convenient way to criticize ourselves. They typically are not building confidence in our female athletes or ourselves.

I'll be the first to admit that it's around this time that I want to completely overhaul my routines. Start a strict diet regimen. Overexercise, etc. Most of these are born out of criticizing myself for my eating and lack of movement over the holidays.

I'm not saying you need to abandon your goals for the new year or anything. But, I DO want you to be really intentional and mindful about what you choose to focus on as the calendar changes from 2021 to 2022, especially as it relates to our daughters.

Remember - Part of our job as moms is to shape the environment for her. Strict dieting, "all or nothing" mindsets around food and exercising, etc can model some behaviors that I see in athletes like perfectionism, being self-critical, and never feeling good enough.

We have a podcast coming out next week all around this topic - so look out for that.

I want you to do this one simple activity as you prepare for the new year as a way that both you and your daughter can be intentional together. This is actually the first part of our vision board workshop that we teach our athletes within the Elite Competitor Program.

Here's an overview of what I'll teach you in this podcast episode:

#1 - What is your vision for your daughter?

#2 - What is your daughter's vision for herself?

#3 - Share your vision with her! I'll go into specifics on what to include/not include in your vision and why it's SO important to share with her.

Having a powerful vision for your daughter and her having a powerful vision for herself is the first step... but it's not going to come true without being intentional.

Here's the truth: If you're not having conversations with her or about who she wants to become and surrounding her with people who encourage, inspire, and build up her confidence... then, the world will do a great job of determining who she should be and how she should show up.

The solution: She needs to see you do the work yourself by setting goals/visions for yourself and sharing your journey with her. It's really important that this is an inspiring journey and not you criticizing yourself and encouraging perfectionism in yourself and your athlete.

She also needs to be surrounded by you and others - coaches, mentors, other athletes - who see her greatness and potential and help bring her vision to life.

So, I want you to make it a point to talk to her about her vision, check in with her regularly, make it a point of conversation so you know where she's at. And then surround her with others who are having the same conversations.

That's exactly what we do in The Elite Competitor Program... In module 1, we set the vision, and then support the actions that are needed to achieve it by surrounding athletes with mentorship from us, accountability, and other athletes traveling a similar journey.

This is one way to build confidence in your daughter - when she has a powerful vision of who she can become and is taking the steps to get there.

If you want to learn more about the Elite Competitor Program or join the waitlist to be the first notified when doors open, go here: www.kristinabreanne.com/ecp

I can't wait to hear your visions and what you and your daughter are discovering together!

    Happy New Year!

How to Help Your Athlete Through A Playing Slump Dec 28, 2021
    Show notes

Playing slumps can be one of the hardest things to watch as a parent.

It’s so hard to watch our daughters struggle in this way sometimes.

To see her not play as good as she normally does
To watch her struggle through games where she feels “off”
To see the frustration as she tries to figure out what’s wrong

    To see her confidence diminishing.

    And the worst…

To wonder how long it will last!

    Here’s the good news:

    They won’t last forever!

Playing slumps are part of EVERY athlete’s journey.

So, what causes playing slumps? Here are a few key things I've experienced first hand and with my athletes:

    1. Experience: the longer she plays and works hard to build confidence and level-up, the more opportunities she'll have to experience challenges, difficulties, and what might feel like "a slump".
    2. Expectations: these could be expectations she puts on herself or unrealistic standards she holds herself to or they could be perceived expectations from coaches, parents, teammates, you name it! Either way, they can take some of the joy out of the game as they weigh on the athlete.
    3. Lack of Confidence: this can be underlying and manifesting itself into during practice and competitions, or it could be a specific game or event that got in her head and then turns into another bad game and another bad game. Then she gets into a loop that she can't get out of.

So, what do you do when your athlete is in a playing slump?

We will talk about what causes slumps and strategies to get out. The first two are mindset shifts and the third (and bonus) strategies are tangible actions.

Here's what we'll cover in this episode on how to help your daughter move through her playing slump and build her confidence:

    1. Realize that this is normal. Progress is not linear
    2. For her to realize that what she's doing isn’t working and decide if she's willing to try something new
    3. Break the cycle! I give you/her two strategies: visualizations and breaking the negative self-talk loop
    4. Bonus: Invest in mental training when she’s not in a slump! Having the skills and habits when she is playing well and confident will set her up to use them when she needs them.

Now take a sigh of relief knowing that what your daughter is experiencing is normal.

In fact, I’ll go as far to say that playing slumps are actually good for her.

After all, it’s in the struggle where we learn how to grow.
It’s when we’re challenged that we actually find and use new strategies.

The easy path doesn’t get our athletes anywhere.

Slumps are a vital part of her growth and confidence development!

How To End 2021 Confident and Inspired - A Powerful Activity for You & Your Daughter! Dec 24, 2021
    Show notes

As we wrap up 2021, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget a critical step in helping our daughters grow as athletes and people.

The power of pausing and reflecting is an essential practice that is often skipped over in the pursuit of the next thing.

Reflection is vital for developing confidence and growth in all aspects of our lives.

In the Elite Competitor Program, we teach female athletes a reflection practice that they use after each competition.

We teach this because reflection is essential for growth! It's also essential for developing confidence and self-awareness.

Reflection allows our athletes (and all of us!) to recognize what worked well so they can more easily repeat it next time. It also allows them to notice what didn't work as well, so they are able to be intentional about what they want to work on going forward.

Athletes want to have a path to improve and feel confident and secure in themselves and their sport. In order to develop this path, they must incorporate the practice of reflection on both the positives and areas for improvement.

We know that our brains want to protect us at all times and will often focus on the negative over the positive. So, it's easy to only see what went wrong. This requires us to really pause and be intentional to recognize and appreciate all that went well, too.

As we focus on the good, then we're more able to repeat it in the future... what we focus on expands!

Here's a simple reflection activity for you and your daughter to complete (ideally, together) in order to close out the year feeling confident and inspired.

Select a few areas of your lives (career, sports, relationships, school, health, etc) and reflect on the following for each area:

    • 3 things you are proud of
    • 2 things you learned about yourself
    • 1 word to describe this year

You can either write this down or discuss with one another. It's a simple activity that you can do together, to build connection, celebrate your strengths and accomplishments, and note key areas of growth and learning.

Next week, we'll focus on setting strong intentions for the New Year!

A Mom's Guide to Social Media & Comparison with Jill & Mary of Girls Mentorship Dec 21, 2021
    Show notes

Comparison is something that nearly every athlete reports struggling with.

    Comparing abilities with other athletes.
Comparing their talents with someone else's.
Comparing their bodies, clothes, and lives with someone they see on social media.

Many times, our athlete daughters can get sucked into a comparison game that ends up discouraging them, halting their progress, and causing them to give up before they even start.

This is nothing new to our guests on the podcast this week, Jill & Mary from Girls Mentorship!

Jill & Mary are confidence coaches for teen and tween girls. They help teach girls how to be the best versions of themselves through life and personal development skill trainings; things like effective communication skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, relationship skills and so much more.

Jill, Mary and I had a fascinating conversation together diving into this issue of comparison and what our athletes (and their moms) can be doing to navigate comparison in a healthy way.

    In this episode...

👉 Learn how you can help your daughter when she compares herself to others then doesn't feel "good enough"

👉 Uncover ways to help athletes manage social media so that it is a positive influence in their life

👉 Discover the #1 strategy you can be using as a mom to help your athlete daughter in this area of comparison

👉 Learn tangible tips around cell phone and social media use

This episode is a must-listen for moms of female athletes who desire to support their daughter as she is faced with comparison in her sport and life, and who want to build confidence in their female athletes!

How To Motivate Your Daughter Without Straining Your Relationship Dec 14, 2021
    Show notes

I often meet with athletes who say that they struggle to stay motivated and parents who say that they have a hard time motivating their daughters.

Usually this is in relation to something physical - like doing the workout, staying on track with habits. But it can also be the mental game practices and habits, specifically those we build in The Elite Competitor Program to build unshakeable confidence and belief in herself.
And usually it also comes in an "off-season" period...when athletes don't have as much structure like practice/training to determine their day.

    What is Motivation?

Motivation is a FEELING. Feelings come and go. We don't actually want our daughter to rely on motivation to do anything because we know that will power and motivation can only last so long.

    Motivation comes AFTER Action!

When it comes down to it, we can't get anyone to do anything. The only person we can control is ourselves.

We want to be careful because we can easily strain the relationship if we nag and "make" our daughters do things they don't want to do.

The BEST is when it's driven by HER. When it's driven by the parent, it's where burnout happens the most.

Here's what we'll cover in this episode that you can do now:

    1. Know her goals/values
      1. Ask her what her big goals are
      2. Listen without judgement, encourage her goals
      3. Then, ask: What do you think you need in order to get there? Who do you need to BE in order to achieve that?
      4. Ask: What support do you need from me?
      5. Really listen to what she has to say!
    2. Know what she values
      1. Winning/being the best -> Make it competitive
      2. Having fun -> Make it fun!
      3. Friendships -> Get her an accountability partner
      4. Lists/Achievements -> Calendar/accountability system

You can really help create a supportive, encouraging, and inspiring environment by supporting your daughter in these ways and helping to enable her to take her own action and create her own motivation. And this will also help her develop more confidence and trust in herself.
