Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

    An R&B groover mix for a Lennox Lewis/HBO reception Dec 31, 2010
    Show notes

HBO is also a network for boxing. I can't recall who was fighting but I got the call that Lennox Lewis was attending and wanted to host a really short meet & greet out in Vegas.
It's a long way and a lot of pay for a DJ to do 2 hours so HBO rang and asked me if I could help out with music. I was told that Lennox was into what's known as Neo-Soul, especially Maxwell and Jill Scott, here's the mix.
The Rebirth - This Journey In
    Kindred - Far Away
Toni Toni Tone - It Never Rains In Southern California
Mary J Blige - Message In Our Music
    Erykah Badu - Bag Lady
Les Nubiannes - Makeda (Spinna Mix)
    Jill Scott - It's Love
    Kelis & Andre 3000 - Millionaire
Isley Brothers - Between The Sheets
Jaguar Wright - The Country SOng
Erykah Badu - Back In The Day
    Maxwell - Dancewitme
    Davina - Can't Help It
    Peven Everett - Testing Me
    DKD - Butter Angel
    Ty - Groovement
    Jill Scott - Gimmie
    Maxwell - Now/At The Party
Angie Stone & Omar - Be Thankful For What You Got
I did get to do a couple of boxing gigs, remembering most the Holyfield/Lewis fight at the Garden in 1999. Wow.

    APT AP10th 04 - Qool DJ Marv LIVE! Dec 31, 2010
    Show notes

One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk)
This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed.
To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series.
Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you?
Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowski, DJ Spinna, Rae & Christian, Esthero, Groove Armada (remix of A Tribe Called Quest's Description of A Fool), Roots Manuva, Ty, Jurassic 5, Bjork, Niko, RJD2, The Nextmen and more.

The Grand Classic Sounds of New York (Qool DJ Marv's Director's Cut) Nov 17, 2010
    Show notes

I love those classic New York movies that have scenes where someone’s keeping their night going by heading to a friend’s afterparty and when they walk in, there’s a mini-jazz orchestra providing the grooves. This is happening in someone’s apartment! The bandleader with the baton bopping with a welcoming smile.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOlpcJhNyDI&feature=related
I’ve never had the pleasure but I recently read in Stanley Crouch collection of essays called Considering Genius that Wynton Marsalis gets down like that for real, presently. This is an I Love New York mix that I got commissioned to compile by a special events consultant extraordinaire (Bowen & Company) that was organizing an affair involving the unveiling of a new penthouse suite in a skyscraper.
A nice new place was on display and my job here was to give the room a classic and grand sound. I’ve got a real soft spot for singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and for jazz in general so this was one of those ‘they pay me to do this(?)’ kind of assignments. http://www.bowenandco.com/
I didn’t get the chance to see the place so I just imagined being on the top of the Empire State building and looking around or re-imagined walking around great neighborhoods all over New York City. Watched some movies like Cotton Club, Harlem Nights, Breakfast At Tiffany's, and Manhattan and imagined what it might be like to be a jazz loving socialite way back when.
This is a city that never ceases to astound and I wish I was around to see performances of all these sounds. Play these songs however, and I feel like I’m right there, then. So glad that I’m right here, now. I do love New York and I hope that this is a keepsake to us proper or former New Yorkers and maybe a delectable enticement to those who want to visit New York proper.
Some titles appear more than once because all the versions are outstanding, yet, performed completely differently. That's Jazz. Enjoy New York City on the Jazz hand side.
Billy Joel - New York State Of Mind
    Dinah Washington - Manhattan
Sarah Vaughn - Autumn in New York
    Eric Satie - Gymnopepie No.3

Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #54 - Hug You Squeeze You Nov 13, 2010
    Show notes

"That's the break. This music is the intermission.
When you tired of standing up all night dancing and sweating and hollering and screaming and stomping your feet.
And it's time that your woman say - well baby I want to just sit down with you and talk with you.
That's where Barry White comes in.
And it's a slot that's fitted in every young teenager, young adult, middle aged adult, the one's that dance and don't dance.
Everybody takes time out for this kind of music somewhere on their playlist at home.
    They have to!
The human mind can only stand so much of that go go go go go music.
And when you got to settle it down...the lyric and the melody is still flowing easy...
...it starts out with a concert concept, it's beautiful strings and setting you up for this thing.
It's not just a lot of screaming and loud guitars blazing everywhere."
    - Barry White
(his quote can be heard at 48:19 on this http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/player/web/2009-08-20T18_32_24-07_00
This mix was created in 2000 for Valentine's night at an L.E.S.N.Y.C. venue called SX137. Otherworldly sensual concepts throughout, the title Hug You Squeeze You comes from the tiny voice that keeps saying that phrase in the Cinematic Orchestra Song called Channel 1 Suite. (I once did a gig with them http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=454862735353&set=a.179563705353.244740.586515353. )
Special hello to my friend Alex Sumner who has supported and appreciated my style for years. We've both moved on from SX137 and spreading our art in our own unique ways.
Please direct your attention to this cool page on the New York Times website featuring artists renditions of the iconic I Love NY image. Alex has quite a few.

If you are ever in Miami - look up him up at the Gansevoort Hotel South Beach. He's a Mr. Everything over there.
Enjoy the moody, melodic, & mysterious Hug You Squeeze You mix with somebody that you want to hug & squeeze.
"Muah & Smooch" is the name of the photo. Taken in Tuscany Italy in early October 2010.
The track listing to this mix is unavailable. Gone with a crashed external drive.

Jazzy Vibes of Latin America - A Qool DJ Marv Live Set of Latin Jazz, Salsa, Cuban & more Nov 11, 2010
    Show notes

Latin Jazz and Salsa music recorded in September 2010 in a Manhattan loft space for a company's end of summer soiree...I mean, fiesta!
Mostly unmixed because many of these songs end cold (meaning that they don't fade out). If you play good songs, and they end cold, let them be. When they finish, you'll find that you can continue on with a similar vibe, or you can change tempo, or you can change music altogether...letting a song end is actually one of the more thoughtful and satisfactory segues.
Clocking in at 3 hours, you can feel tropical, practice your salsa dance, or just plain enjoy the virtuosity of these musicians. I love the bright horns and the endless percussion that fills every crevice in the sound. And Latin music also, in my humble opinion, has the most warm bass sound in recorded music.
Cuban, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Dominican sounds and more. (Feel free to comment if I miss any culture)

What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance? Qool DJ Marv Mixes Jazz Oct 10, 2010
    Show notes

What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance?
That's the question I posed while listening to a set of Jazz CDs sent to me by the people behind http://www.yourfriendorfoe.com/.
Originally conceived to be a stream/download on the Friend or Foe website, this 37 minute mix, designed to feel like an actual live Jazz club performance, is now available here for you to add to your collection.
10/10/10 is what I would give each one of these Jazz giants on that mythical scale. October 10th is also Thelonious Monk's birthday.
My son's name is Thelonious and that's him in the photo practicing piano (on a synthesizer - look at the photo frame on his left to see the concentration in his eyes). His lessons are on a real piano. Need I say more?
Just a little...I wrote a great story about this mix for their site but when the site changed, away it went and so did my words. I found a few on the music blog of a NYC man about town & here's a copy & paste:
“I hope this jazz mix is regarded as an offering of something that could possibly be an introduction to a different approach to musical creativity where instrument virtuosity, versatility, imagination, dexterity, improvisation and communication are the essential components.”
01 Thelonious Monk – “Straight No Chaser” (from Thelonious Monk In Italy)
02 Miles Davis – “Blues By Five” – (from Cookin’ with The Miles Davis Quintet)
03 Thelonious Monk – “Just You Just Me” (from The Unique)
04 Thelonious Monk – “Honeysuckle Rose” (from The Unique)
05 John Coltrane – “Straight Street” (from Coltrane)
06 Miles Davis – “I’ll Remember April” (from Blue Haze)
07 Thelonious Monk – “Liza (All The Clouds’ll Roll Away)” (from The Unique)

    Episode 17: Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #65 - Rare & Precious Gems Aug 19, 2010
    Show notes

A 100% vinyl mix from early 2000s featuring rare (but modern) records that are precious to me. Nowadays I use everything, vinyl, CDs, mp3s...this is a throwback to the days where I would put 15-20 records in front of me, choose the 1st and the last and then fill in the space between the bookends with songs that conveyed my philosophy.
This isn't music as accessory to drunken tomfoolery, this is music that accentuates and represents my mind, aims, influences, and lifestyle.
A bygone era where I left my home and went to record shops and got my fingers dirty flipping through 100s of vinyl to find these Rare & Precious Gems...more & more a thing of the past...more & more, my collection of vinyl shine like jewels to me. I guess I'm weird, and in good shape because it doesn't bother me to still carry vinyl to gigs...even the ones that I fly to.
Every Friday in New York City I play at a place called Bar 6 - my set there is much lighter than this mix...soul, disco, 80s, house, 90s hip hop - and do you know that I put two bags of vinyl on a compact hand truck, walk 7 blocks to the subway, pick up those two bags, approx. 80-100 pounds, carry them down the steps...ride train to the village...carry them up two flights of stairs from the 14th street platform to the street and walk two more blocks to Bar 6? It's oddly satisfying. (side note - on one of these subway rides I saw I guy get on with a stand up bass and I thought, yeah, what I'm doing is not all that strenuous...a stand up bass on a subway, that's effort!)
The irony of the moment is that the musician looked at the dj and his records like the dj and his records, now, looks at the virtual dj with their laptops. Irreplaceable replaced.
No track list but here are some of the artists:
    Minnie Ripperton
    4 Hero
    U.N.K.L.E.
    Massive Attack
    Joi
    Carl Craig
    Assata Shakur
    Amalgamation of Soundz
    Kudu
    Portishead
    David Holmes
    & more
Catch me at Bar 6 sometime, might be my last go round in NYC as a regular DJ gig. I'm passing the baton to the next wave and taking my skills into the world of special events where I've become a specialist DJ.
    Bar 6 - http://www.barsixny.com/ - Fridays 10:30pm-2am
