Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

Look Beyond What Is Jun 02, 2011
    Show notes

A mix made for high school students who participated in a writing program at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It contains a blend of Hip Hop and R&B with a thematic message of positive thinking, togetherness, and urban political ideas. The other side of the game.
    Look Beyond What Is
Love Of My Life - Erykah Badu with Angie Stone, Queen Latifah, & Bahamadia (to start with the voices of women so that the young women are immediately involved...& I grew up with 6 women under one roof so many of my days were full of the voices of women who loved me)
The Renaissance - All Natural featuring Lone Catalyst (included for the Jazz piano loop and lyrics that are personal, informative, and instructive. Also, the mention of getting by without stimulants is an idea that needs to be in the mix of it all)
Hip Hop - Calvin Harris featuring Maine (American Hip Hop listeners generally let the accent stop their interest in UK Hip Hop - if they did not do that, they would hear the kinship and shared experience of appreciation of legendary contributors to the art of Hip Hop, or simply get a kick out of a guy in a British accent name dropping the ledgends)
Steel Contraption DJ BMF featuring Swamburger (Nervous about the downward spiral of literacy and poetics coming from the south around the time this was made, I thought it cool to include an alternative flow and viewpoint on everyman's perspective...just to juxtapose next to the bass and crunk of the time...clever & connected also exist in the dirrty - although I should mention that BMF is from Orlando and Swamburger's from Chicago)
Doin Something - Soulive with Jurassic 5 and Me'Shell N'Degeochello (just another reminder that the Hip Hop idea is beyond local "ghettoes." BKNY is the target audience, here the West Coast voices are not on the same ole same ole gang related blunted superthug theme...other expressions come from the badlands - a nice mix of medley rhyming, beats, live instrumentaion and smooth soul singing)
Family - Jaguar Wright (before rhyme fatigue sets in, back to melodies, harmonies and relatable lyrics about what's most important from a fierce Philly soul singer better known for her strong voice on stronger, less pleasant, topics. Everybody's got another side..."So remember your family")
I Can (a capella) - Nas (from a Hip Hop artist mostly known for either representing the true grit or the excesses of shine, words of encouragement via history aimed toward the youth)
Oh You Want More - Ty (I love UK Hip Hop for the accent and the enunciation and the freedom that some artist there still exercise to say what they want to say and not what they think you want them to say. This is sneakily personal, as during this time, 2005-ish, I'd literally be ambushed in clubs by no-class fraudulent machismos accosting me for 'real nigga shit.' I'd drop this and then watch the chaos in their eyes as they tried not to like this thump and confidence and overt acknowledgement to their wanting more - the only tough guys in the world, to me, are those on front lines in wars or who run into burning buildings)
Witness (1 Hope) - Roots Manuva (this devastatingly unique beat elevates the energy. Most waste this outstandingly captivating production on more about themselves, but Roots is giving you the all world perspective, if you can't follow the flow, than understand the English: http://www.metrolyrics.com/witness-1-hope-lyrics-roots-manuva.html)
New Man Theme - Mr Lif (from the Q-Tip, Guru-esque school of thought - vocabulary, flow, personal perspective on confidence of self via intellect...alternative viewpoints like this get submerged in the tsunami of the irreverent)
Let It Shine - Baba (this gent was part of the Brooklyn Reads Program and it was only appropriate to include his thoughts and groove on the mix that would be given to 100 of his students. From down under, this gent gave his time to Brooklyn teens and teens globally, shine for his shine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRV9BO-EyRA)
Louder than a Bomb (Jam Master Jay Mix) - Public Enemy (my only bit of self-indulgence as I had to play something by PE because their music was on auto-reverse on my walkman all the time when I was younger. Radio has no responsibility to offer old school voices or ideas to an audience that prefers new and now - it is a simple business decision. There are other ways to make sure that these artists are heard, like this mix)
Money - Will I Am - (Unbeknownst to masses, Will I Am was more on the groove side of the vibe before Fergie and club beats redirected the Black Eyed Peas. Anyone into the 90s sound of jazz and soul samples/instrumentaion would enjoy his album on the UK based BBE records http://www.bbemusic.com/data.pl?release=BBEBGCD003 Look beyond what you see now and you find that he has other ways to say what he has to say...then)
A Charmed Life - J-Live (incredibly nimble lyracist over a beat that every (c)rapper would ask out of. Respects first to him rhyming over jazz then to his story of a 'regular guy' (like me) with irregular talents commencing in the way he came up and was brought up. He lets us in instead of just telling us what he has and what you do not. This was released as a single and was on Jazzy Jeff's BBE album, The Magnificent and I'm from Philly and directly influenced by Jazzy so this is a subtle nod to all kinds of personal pleasures and all that Jazz)
Excursion - A Tribe Called Quest (testimonial and instructive = constructive. No way you don't want to build after hearing these words http://www.lyricsfreak.com/a/a+tribe+called+quest/excursions_20001783.html seminal)
Groovement - Ty (after those doses of heavy information, a song that hearkens sounds that remind me of songs like Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody, Stevie Wonder's Boogie On Reggae Woman, and Common's GO - the thing is about this is that the dope musical production is worked wondrously with dexterity and rhythm by Ty. More perspective that takes into account what so many do not. "Seek us" is my subliminal for them to find more like this for balance against the tidal wave of N's for hire - Ty instructs with fiya "Handle your business!")
Umi Says - Mos Def (I'm a reluctant of any rapper that just plays a gangsta character because they discovered that there was money to be made from the vast majority of Americans and people worldwide who prefer redundant egocentric raunchy N's and product placement. I feel like they get enough support from wanna be liked DJs and the commerce machine that presents them. Since I know that it is an act, and that they can't sing, and that they can't play an instrument, I put them in the category of capitalists, not artists. They are going to get theirs while caring only about themselves. Mos Def's lyric "I want my people to be free" most definitely assures you that he cares about more than himself)
Life Is Like a Park - Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes - (Most know her for her TLC days and her personal wild rides. This song, never released in the states, was included for that very reason. Only with this question: why not?)
Love & War - Amp Fiddler (Kwasi Asante introduces this and gives the benediction. This is included to let the youth know that the DJ that was part of their program has been to other places in the world because of his developing of his gift. There's affection in the applause of the Londoners and I hoped they heard that and then realized that this live set ended with something from ME and my mind, regardless of what they wanted to here. The war in Iraq started that weekend and I felt it important to let the people there at this gig in London that I, for one, stood for something)
    I am so idealistic.
I hope that some of the Brooklyn high schoolers got through this entire mix.
    I hope.

Dream From The Middle Mar 20, 2011
    Show notes

Recorded while researching music during my preparation to be the music maestro (DJ and music consultant) at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Media Summit.
This position didn't exist at the 1st summit in 2010 and the presenters decided to take a different approach by agreeing that my versatility and virtuoso could add something to the ambiance of an already incredibly impressively futuristic hotel and its power circuit cool white sparkling silver shining summit room.
If you are anybody in that room, you are successful. Multinational from the ground up, the strong arms who did the heavy lifting, to the team doing the sound, lights, and video, to the event handlers PublicisLive working in tune with the host Abu Dhabi Media's event specialists. If you are one of the interlocking wheels of this event, people who do their jobs on a high level thought highly of you.
They are all excellent at their jobs so I needed to be excellent.
Dream from the Middle is a prelude. After amassing 100s of songs and giving them all a listen over a little more than a month, I'd listened to more than 400 new songs, one by one, all the way through and mental noting.
That is a while so when it was time for round two of listening I was ready to move ahead from the searching and into some flows and blends.
Chill mixes are something nice to create. My ideas are as vivid as if I am listening to party music. I like the space for your thoughts that slower dreamy tempos give.
For some the middle is heart, for others, middle is soul. Both are correct.
I approached this atmosphere provider assignment with free imagination and chose to intertwine sounds of the region with electronic music from all over. Where we were was the hub and where everyone who was there came from were the spokes.
Warmed up the wheels with this and put it in cruise control.
A light braided musical fantasy made to feel like watching a movie with no picture.
This is undoubtedly a dream come true so consider this a suggestion for you to keep on doing so yourself. Deal? Then dream.
Then move and take the steps, big and small, to do.

Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #22 - London Soul Classics Jan 06, 2011
    Show notes

Welcome to the alternate universe that was in my ears in the late 80s/early 90s.
The 22nd edition of my Beats, Jazz, & Soul mixtapes was a nod to the influence of the sounds that I found in the import bins while record shopping early on in my DJ career. Artists like Soul II Soul, Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Sweetback (a band consisting of members of Sade's musicians/producers), and Loose Ends showed me that the jazzy soul groove sound, I thought, at the time, exclusive to black america went way beyond barriers of color and nationality.
When I called this London Soul Classics, it was because when I made this, these kinds of songs were not that well received in a U.S. mainstream club environment, but were the jams in the 'underground' scenes...parties thrown by Giant Step in NYC or King Britt & friends in Philly, which usually had internationals in the audience. I'd heard, seen, read that people would dance to these kinds of songs in clubs in the UK that were as large as mainstream clubs in the U.S. - giving me hope that this music wasn't just for head nodding to in headphones or home listening, but for dancing as well.
I learned that it took really free spirits to be able to let go to these kinds of sounds and those spirits are the spirits that I love and play to.
In a way, this tape was positive and wishful thinking that someone from overseas would hear that I understood worldwide groove and extend an invitation to me to play there.
The simple dreams of a DJ trying to make a mark.
As you see in the photo, like the Brand New Heavies song Dream Come True http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH5lEIhjOHY&feature=fvw - that dream DID come true. That's me on a curb and on a poster in London.
Omar - Music For The Pipe
Peter Brown - For Your Love
Sweetback feat. Amel Larrieux - You Will Rise
    Sade - Keep Looking
    Sade - Siempre Hay Esperanza
Loose Ends - A Little Spice
The Brand New Heavies - Never Stop
Soul II Soul - Back To Life
Soul II Soul - Jazzy's Groove
    Deee-lite - Deee-lite Theme
    Him - BaDoPa
Family Stand - You Don't Have To Worry
Him - Starfruit & Green Tea
Jamiroquai - When You Gonna Learn
Soul II Soul - Dream's A Dream (A Night At The Opera)
    Loose Ends - Slow Down
    Soul II Soul - Fairplay
Terence Trent Darby - Wishing Well
Diana Brown & Barry K Sharpe - Masterplan
    D-Influence - Good Life
    D-Influence - Good Lover
    The Chimes - Heaven
    Jamiroquai - Space Cowboy
    Omar - Fallin

The Wire - The HBO Series 4th Season Premiere Party '08 Dec 31, 2010
    Show notes

With a party that's much more sophisticated than the scenes depicted in the show, this season's party started with a nod to the grown folks in the cast. Later there were sounds for the new youthful cast members that Season 4 focused on.
One of my strategies when playing is to get everyone in the room involved by touching them musically. Some think, reasonably so, that the older generation is irrelevant in a party scene...play that new stuff and the geezers just gotta deal (or are invisible). It's hard for me not to see people that I admire. If you've been here longer than me and you have some exceptional accomplishments - I love you and you matter! At some point at everything I do, there's a 'here's to you' moment for my living legends in the house.
Starting with some un(familiar) songs this blend moves quickly into NYC garage classics.
