Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

    Show notes

On this evening at the Waldorf Astoria, I transformed from Qool DJ Marv into the entertainer of the entertainers, Rainey Purple & the BlackerBerry Sweet Juice Orchestra.
I only had to imagine what it would be like to be at a party in the 1920s. What would be the feel of an evening out? Back then, that was going to the club.
    http://theurbandaily.com/tv/jbarrow/qool-dj-marv-is-hbos-secret-weapon-video/
Outstanding musicianship abounds. A special thank you to spectacular pianist Peter Mintun. Every time that he took the stage, the stage was set for a change in energy and feeling.

This is like an R&B mix, except at house music tempo.
This is an R&B conversation, too. The mature version. The down here on the ground version.
Let us listen in on this couple's house:
Said he, "A Day Without U - Osunlade"
Answered she...with a reaction by him, "My Reflection (Original) - Osunlade"
Then he lays it on the line and tells her what he really thinks, "Angel - Liquideep"
She heard, but had to confess, "Closer I Get (Club Mix) - Marie St. James"
With words like those coming from her, they moved the conversation from the kitchen to a room where they could relax. You know what they say men think about every x amount of moments? "All Night Long (Album) - Mood II Swing"
She's flattered and it feels so good to be wanted but she's got something else to say, "Stay Together (Original Vocal Mix) - Barbara Tucker"
His eyes tell her that he understands as he reaffirms why he is where he is, "Girl of My Dreams (Timmy Regisford & Adam Rios Remix) - Peven Everett"
Still, however, she wants to makes sure that they both understand, the "Same Thing (Feat. Maiya James] - Osunlade"
Always the dreamer, he likes that she listens to his aspirations, both realistic and fantastic, "Butterfly (Ron Trent's Musicandpower Remix) - Osunlade"
All she can do is, "Hope - Dee Mac"
Because every time she gets close to feeling like it's real, them hims of the past changed lyrics, "Love Song [A Feliciano Ricanstruction Remix] - Nadirah Shakoor"
And he does too, but his lyrics are about trying harder to make it better, "The Better Life (Muzikman Edition) - Georg Levin"
She & he, they go to bed.... (D stands for DREAM in this story), "Tha D - Karizma"
In the morning, he loves the way she wakes him up, "Good Morning - Karizma featuring Monique Bingham"

Qool DJ Marv LIVE Southport Weekender's SunceBeat2 Boatride on July 29 2011 Aug 03, 2011
    Show notes

On a boat as a part of a summer music festival called SunceBeat put together by the people behind Southport Weekender is a heck of a place to debut my house music sets.
Especially as the opener on a boatride that included two Chicago house music legends Anthony Nicholson (http://www.5chicago.com/features/june2011/anthony-nicholson/) and Boo Williams. During introductions, I told them that I was "the freshman around these parts, so I'm gonna go 'head and start." Anthony said, "Do you my brother."
    {} = mental notes
    {I was} - Nervous Track
(another word for Introduction and/or Statement of Purpose} - Preamble
{putting that last thought into words} - Give A Little Love
{it was kinda cloudy at this point + a Chaka's vocal from Clouds gave the groovers a familiar voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xADrCKYUEcc} - In Da Clouds
{but then after a few nautical miles, it got real pretty and blue sky like} - Paradise
{now a groove with some nice organ going on, headspace to move, from da clouds to da club, telepathic thanks to Shelter NYC} - At the Club
{in the middle of the sea atmosphere so nice, letting it breathe so they can soak it all in, strings feel like the breeze felt} - Sleazy E
{hip hop that flows in me says hello, shout out to some my favorites, Dilla, Q-Tip, MJ... - Move

{nod to GSH, T-Connection, and some benevolent advice} - Do What You Want To Do
{to my brother Dewey who loves the source of this bassline and horn sample, I knew it was Friday, but when those vocals escalate, felt like Sunday - also shout out to RubNTug for their versions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JsRFLFgno0&feature=artist} - Sunday Shoutin'
Special Shout out to my brothers Stormin Norman and DJ Cosi of Sundae Sermon family in Harlem, NYC too! http://www.sundaesermon.com/
