Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

    Re-Experience The Experience Aug 08, 2010
    Show notes

Re-Experience The Experience from The Bold and The Brave.
More than a tribute to Jimi, the Bold & The Brave aka the Mighty G-Man & Qool DJ Marv have produced either a reimagined recollection or a primer for those who have had Jimi on their list of artists to get into. All of the selections play at their original tempos, the Bold & the Brave have twisted them up to create some spaced out altered versions. Working with the parts and imagining Jimi's sonic sensibilities, we present a version of our dream concert.

Arthur Ashe Celebration @ Phat Farm/Baby Phat Soho Store in Soho NYC Jun 07, 2010
    Show notes

100% vinyl set with a literal theme - grace and elegance.
Not much more to be said about the late Arthur Ashe. I can't recall if I got to shake his hand when he came to Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism in 1993 to lecture but I was there soaking in the wisdom.
This party was actually for the launch of footwear produced by Run from Run-DMC. Mr. Ashe's wife Jean was in attendance and this set pretty much was for her.
Thanks to the Simmons family and my bud L'Mani because this set was spun on his turntables that evening.

Suite 903 mixed by Qool DJ Marv | The Director's Cut Alternative Ending Apr 20, 2010
    Show notes

Original vision wasn't the final version.
    Director's Cut Alternative Ending
All the same through track 21.
    14. Ms. Dynamite - It Takes More (Includes her rap unedited - this was on the cutting room floor for the public version)
    21. Raphael Saadiq - Skyy, Can You Feel Me
    22. Lisa Left-Eye Lopes - Life Is Like A Park (Released overseas so getting the clearance wasn't possible)
    23. The Avalanches - Since I Left You (Prince Paul Remix)
    24. Slum Village - What Is This
    25. Mr. Scruff - Come On Grandad
    26. Tweet - Make Your Move
    27. Focus - Having Your Fun
    28. BMF featuring Swamburger - Steel Contraption
    29. Glenn Lewis & Amel Larrieux -What's Come over Me
    30. Eric Roberson - Hold On (He sold this song to Dwele within days of my submitting this mix and I had to remove Eric's version and replace it with When Love Calls)
This is the raw mix with my regular recording EQ. This CD that few got was compressed in a way that there was some distortion sporadically...pretty for your ears here. No "Qool Marvs or Suite 903s" drops.
I like this ending better because it's cold and at the end of the song. The released version fades the last song.
If you are into it, a collector's item. Enjoy!

Beats, Jazz, and Soul #64 | Afro-Disco-Beat | Part 2 of 2 of Special Edition Mix for the New York Museum of African Art Mar 17, 2010
    Show notes

Done sometime in the mid-2000s for the Museum of African Art in New York City.
Joe Claussell, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, Masters at Work, Olutunji, & more.
I don't have the event art work but there's an image for you. My press credential from a 1993 trip to Libreville, Gabon in Africa where I went to report on a summit that was organized by Philadelphia's Rev Leon Sullivan and was well attended by many African-American civil rights luminaries including Coretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, Cicely Tyson, & Dick Gregory. Thanks to Philadelphia radio station WDAS and their then head of the news department, E. Steven Collins, for that experience.
I had a simple quiet and unforgettable moment in an elevator there with Coretta Scott King...kinda divine
Loosely related but I hope a good story for you.

"24" Season 8 Premiere Reception | Recorded live on January 14 2009 at the Soho House, New York City | Qool DJ Marv LIVE!
After the 1st song, Mykelti Williamson came over to me and asked, with fervor, "who was that?" I told him that it was Rocco DeLuca & The Burden, an artist on Kiefer Sutherland's label. His night already seemed made. We shook hands and I knew a good night was in store.
The starting point of set that cruises along through many genres and styles.
The show is rugged the cast party's smooth.
