Getting Honest About Why We Exercise [Engrid Solo Episode] Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

If you've ever struggled with your relationship with exercise this episode is for you. Exercise is tricky because it's a behavior our society supports, applauds, and highly encourages. While exercise may look positive, the root driving force may not be so. We hope this episode offers insight into the nuances behind our socially encouraged practice of working out. Unfortunately behind the shiny curtain of phrases like "you'll never regret a workout" & "I love the way exercise makes me feel" lives the less-than-shiny REAL reasons most folks feel driven to move their body: burning off calories, making up for what they ate, and manipulating their bodies to look a certain way.

In this solo episode, Engrid, a non-diet certified Strength & Conditioning Coach & personal trainer, shares her own journey with recovering from exercise compulsion as part of her eating disorder. Additionally she shares helpful practices to help stop using exercise to earn or burn off what you ate.

    ____

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • Questions to as reflect on if you're struggling with your relationship with exercise
    • Socially acceptable phrases we hear surrounding working out & exercise
    • The real feelings we may be denying ourselves from
    • My origin story with exercise, how it became a compulsion & played a role in my eating disorder, and where I'm at with it today
    • Helpful takeaways + practices to help stop using exercise to earn or burn off what you ate

The Years We Wasted Trying To Be "Not Like Other Girls" Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

In today's episode we're talking about the years we wasted trying to be "chill" and "not like other girls". If you were born in the late 80's early 90's you likely swam in similar water. The early 2000's Rom Com Era followed by the 2010's "Hipster Era all reinforced that liking popular (especially feminine/age appropriate) stuff was "lame" "cringy"

    ______

    IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:

    • Messages we received growing up about suppressing our desires/interests especially around traditionally feminine things
    • Any masculine interests/hobbies we perceived as better/more valuable in some way
    • How the "not like other girls" trope impacted us
    • If we've ever pretended to like something or to NOT like something so we'd be seen as cool/chill/not like other girls?
    • Examples of ways we suppressed our true nature to seem more masculine/cool/chill/less needy (in relationships, work, friendships) - (aka times we tried to "not be like other girls")
    • Some "basic" things that we like now

    Let's Talk about Therapy Feb 25, 2022
    Show notes

If you've been a long time listener of Gal Pals you know we are very pro-therapy over here. Today's episode is all about our personal experiences with therapy: when we first started going, how we found a good fit, when we started to see "results", and overall how we've evolved because of what we've learned in therapy.

What to Expect From This Episode:

This is meant to be a conversation where we share what prompted us to go to therapy, how we found our therapists, and when we started noticing "results".

Just a friendly reminder these are just our experiences and we realize they do not represent the wide array of experiences folks have with therapy. Our intention is to simply share what this was like for us in hopes to inspire a dialogue with the people in your life and demystify the therapy experience. As always, take what you like and the rest.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • When we first started going to therapy and what prompted it
    • How therapy was talked about in your families growing up
    • How we found the therapists' we have now
    • When did we started to see "results"
    • Ways we've changed/evolved BECAUSE of what we've learned in therapy
    • When we took breaks from therapy or changed therapist and how we knew it was it time to go back
    • What a typical therapy session is like

Things We've Changed Our Minds About Feb 18, 2022
    Show notes

Today's episode is all about the opinions, tastes, ideas and beliefs we've changed our minds about. Our intention with this episode is to open up a dialogue about being ok with being wrong about something or letting go of a set of beliefs that may have worked for you in the past. We both find it deeply inspiring to hear how people grow and evolve when presented with new information.

    DISCLAIMER:

In this episode we do discuss disordered eating, eating disorders, and body image in this episode. We do NOT discuss numbers, weight, tracking calories of any kind.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • Stuff we used to love - but don't anymore
    • Things we used to hate but kinda like now
    • How we thought our lives would be at this age 29/33 (when we were 15)
    • Groups/ideas/phases we had that looking back are cringe

    RESOURCES MENTIONED:

A new research study that shows how the body and metabolism changes after calorie restriction and dieting. The clients followed a very strict calorie restricted diet and exercise routine and even years after participating in the show, their metabolism was slower than what it should be (Source)

Restriction leads to deprivation which leads to overeating which leads to guilt and then the restriction begins again. You have to stop placing foods off limits and stop restricting in order to stop overeating (Source).

The Problem with "Before & After" Feb 11, 2022
    Show notes

Today we're discussing how the use of "before & after" photos led to the mindset of constant improvement seeking and disowning of our past selves. We're going to dive into how it can perpetuate this idea that the "before" version of you is bad or wrong should be disowned. That the "new you" is always just 6 months and one amazing before and after photo away. We'll get into a broader discussion of how we've struggled to integrate those past selves and what we wish we could thank those younger selves for.
