Rock N Roll Librarian: Time is Tight - My Life, Note By Note by Booker T. Jones Feb 16, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode Rock n Roll Librarian Shelley Sorenson and Rock n Roll Archaeologist Christian Swain explore a musician vital to the Stax Records and Southern Soul sounds, Booker T. Jones. As we discuss his memoir, “Time is Tight: My Life, Note By Note”, we play samples of many Stax hits and other important tracks that Booker wrote, produced, arranged and performed on, featuring Otis Redding, William Bell, Carla and Rufus Thomas, Albert King, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge, Sam and Dave and, of course, Booker T. and the MGs.

From Booker T. Jones's earliest years in segregated Memphis, music was the driving force in his life. While he worked paper routes and played gigs in local nightclubs to pay for lessons, Jones, on the side, was also recording sessions in what became the famous Stax Studios - all while still in high school. Not long after, he would form the genre-defining group Booker T. and the MGs, whose recordings went on to sell millions of copies, win a place in Rolling Stone's list of top 500 songs of all time, and help forge collaborations with some of the era's most influential artists.

Nearly five decades later, Jones's influence continues to help define the music industry, but only now is he ready to tell his remarkable life story. Time is Tight is the deeply moving account of how Jones balanced the brutality of the segregationist South with the loving support of his family and community, all while transforming a burgeoning studio into a musical mecca.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 62: Bryan Ferry + Prog Rock + John Prine Audio Interview Feb 15, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, RBP's power trio reforms to talk about all that's new – and everything that's free – on the site this week. Los tres hombres start with the solo Bryan Ferry, a.k.a. "Byron Ferrari", a.k.a. "Friern Barnet", revisiting the Roxy Music frontman's makeover as a dinner-jacketed lounge lizard and aspiring country gentleman.

They then mark the publication of Mike Barnes' Prog-Rock magnum opus A New Day Yesterday with a free-ranging chinwag about the pros and cons of said genre – with specific reference to Mike's great pieces on Pink Floyd and Peter Hammill.

We hear a hilarious clip of beloved country-folk troubadour John Prine reminiscing about an improbable visit to Phil Spector's L.A. mansion, followed by a good-humoured debate on the merits or otherwise of, well, country-folk troubadours such as John Prine.

Finally, Mark walks us through his personal highlights of the week's "library load", focusing on quotes from pieces about Paul Simon, the Bang(le)s and an unlikely 1997 hook-up between the Wu-Tang Clan and Sharleen Spiteri's Texas. Discussion of maverick axeman Marc Ribot and electro-swingers Caravan Palace rounds the episode.

Pieces discussed: Bryan Ferry, Brain Fury, Biryani Ferret, Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, Peter Hammill/Van der Graaf Generator, Captain Beefheart, John Prine audio, the Mersey Scene, The Supremes, Charlie Watts, Paul McCartney on Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix live, Paul Simon, Kilburn and the High Roads, The Bangs, R.E.M., Deborah Harry, Wu-Tang Clan meets Texas, Pet Shop Boys, Marc Ribot, Foals' Yannis Philippakis, Lianne La Havas and Caravan Palace

Deeper Digs in Rock: Marcus King Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

Christian Swain, THE Rock N Roll Archaeologist, celebrates show 100 with hot new singer/guitarist Marcus King! First, Christian thanks all who have helped him get to 100 and remind everyone who has been on the show. We find out the real secret sauces that make DDIR what it is and what is the real mission! And then it is a short interview from the road with Marcus.

A 23-year-old guitar phenom and innovative songwriter, Marcus King can simultaneously switch from swaggering rock to supersonic soul – with his vocal powers taking center stage on debut solo record El Dorado, out now. The album is a Dan Auerbach produced, genre-bending release from a world-class young talent, that will establish him as one of the most soulful voices of his generation.

Marcus started learning guitar at age three or four. He has played professionally since he was 11 and always knew he wanted to make music his life. A fourth-generation musician, Marcus has followed in his family’s footsteps. His grandfather was a country guitarist, and his father continues to perform live. The Marcus King Band founded in Greenville, South Carolina in 2013, is his tight knit group. Drummer Jack Ryan, bass player Stephen Campbell, trumpeter/trombonist Justin Johnson, sax/steel guitarist Dean Mitchell along with Marcus—bring an irreplaceable combination of commitment, craft and soul to their work and are one of the hardest working bands today. They have played 140 shows in the last year and sold out countless venues, including Brooklyn Bowl three nights in a row and Marcus’ namesake festival, The Marcus King Band Family Reunion. This year, the festival featured acts such as Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Yonder Mountain String Band, Josh Ritter, Amanda Shires, and many more.

From the start, Marcus earned rave reviews for his kinetic musicianship with The Washington Post describing him as a “guitar phenom” at age 20. Carolina Confessions, helmed by GRAMMY-Award winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson), topped the Americana radio charts and received critical acclaim from the likes of VICE Noisey, NPR and Rolling Stone, who described him as an “electrifying rock performer.” Marcus also recently embarked on a string of dates with Chris Stapleton, who called him “one of his favorite artists” when he recently joined him onstage. Marcus King continues to re-write his fast moving and surprising story. You can hear change in the wisdom of his lyrics and deeply soulful vocals, bringing sheer musical command to every performance.

Rock Candy Ep. 105: Death - Rock Fire Funk Express Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

Before there was punk, there was a band called Death. If we were to tell you that three African American boys from Detroit, Michigan were playing punk in their bedroom years before bands like The Ramones or The Sex Pistols had gotten together, you'd call us crazy. But this is a true story- meet the Hackney brothers, who, with the encouragement of their friends and family, learned how to play instruments and make music together after being inspired by legendary rock acts. But, they never seemed to get recognized for their revolutionary sound until over 3 decades later. We tell you their story and where they are now after gaining the success they went after in their youths. Death is a truly epic proto-punk band, so this is an episode not to be missed!

Make It Stop: Pat Boone - In A Metal Mood with Ginny Nightshade and Mike D'Angelo Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

In the 1950s, wholesome whitebread protestants were terrified by the so-called "Race Records" of the likes of Little Richard, Charles Singleton and Nat King Cole. Enter Pat Boone, a palatable alternative to both black musicians and the gyrating hips of Elvis Presley. With his milquetoast covers of black artists' original compositions, Pat Boone quickly surged to superstardom, amassing millions of dollars, jumpstarting a career in film and television, and spreading the good word to his avowedly Christian Conservative audience. In 1997, at age 63, Boone decided to try his hand at an entirely new form of cultural appropriation by shedding his cardigan for a leather vest and choker, and recording In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, an album of cover songs by the likes of Alice Cooper, Ronnie James Dio, Metallica, and his neighbor and friend Ozzy Osbourne. Mike D'Angelo and Ginny Nightshade of Old School Game Show join Heather and Mike to discuss this anomaly and its place in Boone's milieu. What exactly compels a Christian Conservative grandpa, birther and avowed homophobe to give a pass to the most Satanic genre? And is there any value to be found in an album made by such a wretched bigot? It's a long way to the top if you want to croon and crow. Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.
