Make It Stop: Dave Matthews Band - Everyday with Brian Melanson Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

Despite institutional disdain and lukewarm critical reception, the Dave Matthews Band has maintained a ravenous and vocal fanbase for nearly three decades. Their patented blend of soft rock, smooth jazz and jam band wankery has wowed trust fund hippies and white hat frat bros for as long as most of us can remember. But even Dave's hordes of loyalists couldn't help but cast a weary side eye at the band's tepid crossover album, 2001's Everyday. Written and produced with the assistance of pop songwriting stalwart Glen Ballard ("Hand In My Pocket", "Man In The Mirror") after scrapping a set of beloved session tracks recorded by legendary producer Steve Lilywhite, Everyday is chock full of soaring choruses and easily digestible song structures while lacking the jazzy experimental jamminess and earnest acoustic guitar plucking that devoted Daveheads crave. Where does that leave Heather, Mike, and their guest and Stoppie for life Brian Melanson, who never cared for Dave anyway? Well, essentially, we also think this album sucks. Deeper Digs in Rock: Ritchie Valens - His Guitars and Music with Ryan Sheeler Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

A timely bonus episode of Deeper Digs in Rock! Christian sits down with Ryan Sheeler, lecturer in the music department at Iowa State University where he teaches the History of American Rock ‘n’ Roll. He has a new book out from Hal Leonard Press called ‘Ritchie Valens: His Guitars and Music’.

On February 3rd, 1959, Valens, along with the Big Bopper and Winter Dance Party tour headliner Buddy Holly, climbed into Roger Peterson’s Beechcraft Bonanza for what should have been a short flight from Clearlake Iowa to Moorhead City, Minnesota. As most rockers know, the plane crashed shortly after takeoff in poor weather, killing all on board. The infamous “Day the Music Died”.

Ryan's quick read book is less biography and more detailed on the 1950’s vintage equipment Valens used in his very, very short career (less than one year). He also provides transcriptions (tablature and notation) on the song La Bamba, both as originally recorded and covered by Los Lobos for the biopic released in 1987.

No Filler: Riding the Synthwave with Com Truise Feb 03, 2020
    Show notes

Nearly a decade ago, the synthwave genre saw a new wave popularity after the release of the action-drama Drive, with Kavinsky's "Nightcall" being prominently featured in the film. But Seth Haley (who goes by the Com Truise) had been making analog electronic music for years prior to that, and released his debut EP Cyanide Sisters just one year before. Com Truise's brand of synthwave expertly blends IDM and chillwave elements with the nostalgia of 80's synth film-scores.

    Tracklist

    1. Com Truise - Slow Peels
    2. John Carpenter - The President Is Gone
    3. Harold Faltermeyer - Fletch Lives
    4. Com Truise - Cyanide Sisters
    5. Com Truise - BASF Ace
    6. Com Truise - Pyragony
    7. Orions Belte - Tudo Que Você Podia Ser
    8. Legowelt - Danger In The Air
    9. Com Truise - Sundriped

I'm In Love With That Song: Roxy Music - 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache' Feb 01, 2020
    Show notes

Wealth and excess go together; emptiness and detachment are right around the corner. This song delves into all of that, along with a particular obsession. What do you do when money no longer buys you a thrill? Bryan Ferry has some thoughts...

NOTE: Though there's no profanity used in this episode, the discussion does involve sexual activities so be warned... you might wanna listen to this one on headphones.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 60: Dorian Lynskey on Daft Punk, Can Audio Interview ... and Brexit Feb 01, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, we wave a sad goodbye to the EU with the aid of Dorian Lynskey, Guardian contributor, author of 33 Revolutions Per Minute and The Ministry Of Truth, and host of the excellent Remainiacs podcast.

Dorian talks Mark, Barney & Jasper through his stellar career in music writing, focusing on his interviews with German superstar Paul van Dyk and French electro-House robots Daft Punk. Dorian also discusses Remainiacs on the eve of the Brexit countdown, and the four remoaners collectively lament the end of the beginning of the withdrawal… or is it the beginning of the end?

The Euro theme continues with a clip from the late Andy Gill's delightful 1997 audio interview with Irmin, Holger & Michael of krautrock kings Can, heard chuckling about the "erotic dreams" embedded in soldiers' mattresses. A brief discussion of Can's uniqueness as an experimental unit ensues.

Also for RBP subscribers is the selection of new library pieces presented by Mr. Pringle, including fashion tips from Mods in 1964, a tour of Philly's Sigma Sound studios in 1975, and a cab ride across London with jazz legend Archie Shepp in 1985…

Many thanks to special guest Dorian Lynskey; visit his website dorianlynskey.com for further information about his books and the Remainiacs podcast.

Pieces discussed: Paul van Dyk, Röyksopp, Daft Punk, Air, Serge Gainsbourg, Amon Düül et al., Kraftwerk, Can audio, Mod fashions, Marc Bolan, Philly Sound, Elvis Presley R.I.P., Archie Shepp, Whitney Houston's Bodyguard soundtrack, 5ive, Matthew Herbert Big Band, The new blues and Chris Darrow
