The Band: A History - Rock of Ages Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

“Everybody had been so easily satisfied before and then it got harder to do what we did at ease… The feeling that the group had become what we’d rebelled against… that’s what a lot of the music after The Band was about.'' Robbie Robertson reflected in 1982 on the Rock of Ages period in The Band's history.

It had felt like a while since The Band actually felt like a well oiled unit. Truth be told, The Band’s success was like a mousetrap, it had finally sprung and they were now stuck in more ways than one. Each member of the group were going through their own personal struggles in one way or another. Each member had their own lives with their wives, children and friends. It seems like they didn’t know how to communicate or to stop the ever moving freight train to take a second to slow down and come up with a plan on how to move forward in their new environment.

After “Cahoots” there a momentary sigh of relief. It was a desperate attempt at keeping it all together. Collectively, The Band’s two leaders, Levon and Robbie were realizing that it was finally time to put a stop to it. Their success founded them the ability to take more lead in directing their career. To help and maybe try and reclaim what they had felt what they had when they were making music alone in the mountains of Woodstock with the world not caring about them making music. But they wouldn’t be going out with a whimper, but with a bang.

Rock's Backpages Ep.63: Neil Tennant on Smash Hits + Pet Shop Boys + Andy Weatherall Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, Mark & Barney invite the ever-entertaining Neil Tennant to look back on his time at Smash Hits magazine — and on how he became pop's ultimate poacher-turned-gamekeeper.

Neil talks about mid-'70s London and about interviewing a pudgy Marc Bolan for Marvel UK. He recalls the laughter and irreverence of his 1982-85 stint at Smash Hits before the Pet Shop Boys shot to No. 1 in Britain and then America. After hearing clips of himself speaking to Steven Daly in 1996, he attempts to explain the longevity of the PSBs but takes issue with the term "national treasure".

Mark & Barney pay tribute to the late Andrew Weatherall as we hear a clip of the legendary DJ/producer/remixer talking to DJ History's Bill Brewster in 2009. Neil offers his perspective on the evolution of the UK's club culture through the '90s and then pitches in as Mark guides us through highlights of the week's new library additions. Discussion follows on Hawkwind's topless dancer Stacia, Michael Watts' 1976 dinner with Laura Nyro and the 10th anniversary of Manchester's Haçienda club…

Many thanks to special guest Neil Tennant details about the Pet Shop Boys’ new album Hotspot and upcoming tour are available via petshopboys.co.uk. The new editions of Chris Heath’s Pet Shop Boys, Literally and Versus America are published by Heinemann and out on March 19th.

Pieces discussed: Neil Tennant, Neil Tennant audio, Soft Cell, Wham!, The Power of Negative Thinking, Andy Weatherall audio, Andy Weatherall's Mixed Emotions, Andy Weatherall: Pick and Remix, Cilla Black, Jimi Hendrix, Hawkwind's Stacia, Laura Nyro, Curtis Mayfield, the Haçienda, 0(+>/Prince, Steve Earle and Willie Nelson's drummer Paul English.

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: David Greig Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

Scottish playwright David Greig was first “cracked open” to Dylan when he heard Desire in a remote part of South Africa “under the influence of the most extraordinarily strong dope”. “That’s it”, he thought, “I’M GOING IN!” He has yet to come out.

David wrote his version of Euripides’ The Bacchae by playing the Hard Rain album over and over while drinking red wine and channelling “Dylan as Dionysius, Dylan as shaman”. Quotes that leap out of this most Scottish of episodes: “Bob Dylan couldn’t exist except for Edinburgh”, “I secretly love the glorious oddness of his bad rhymes” and his favourite bit of advice from Bob: “an artist should always be in the state of becoming” (from Scorsese’s No Direction Home). Other names lightly dropped include Kris Kristofferson, Robert Burns and David’s recent collaborator Mark Knopfler. Join us for a special episode that’s as warming as a wee dram.

David Greig is Artistic Director of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. His many plays and adaptations, staged in Scotland, London and around the world, include: Europe, Tintin In Tibet, Caligula, The American Pilot, The Bacchae, Midsummer, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Lanark, The Lorax, Touching The Void and this summer’s Old Vic production of Local Hero.

Goldmine: Wishbone Ash Guitarist Andy Powell Feb 23, 2020
    Show notes

It's been 50 years since Wishbone Ash's debut album hit record stores. Present day, guitarist Andy Powell is very excited about the band's newest album, "Coat of Arms," and he comes on the Goldmine Podcast to talk about it in detail.

Powell is the only original member left — bassist Martin Turner, guitarist Ted Turner and drummer Steve Upton all left at different periods in the band's career. The band's current lineup consists of Mark Abrahams on guitar, Bob Skeat on bass and Joe Crabtree on drums. Abrahams is the newest addition to the band and he brings a unique dynamic to the overall songwriting.

Listen to this episode of the Goldmine Podcast as Andy Powell compares Wishbone Ash's past and present.

Vinyl Snob EP. 14: HiFi Stereo Store Feb 22, 2020
    Show notes

A good stereo store is hard to find these days, but in Dave Whitaker's interview with Chris Larson at Northcoast Audio in Eureka, CA., you'll see why it's worth it to seek out your nearest brick and mortar store. In Vinyl News we have a double whammy of not-so-great news for the vinyl industry. Dave catches up with Steve Sheldon of the recently closed Rainbo Records pressing plant and gets more information on the impact of the Apollo Masters fire from Ron McMaster, long-time mastering engineer at Capitol Records. And in our indie record store segment, we visit Ian Clark at Record City in Brooklyn, NY.

Love That Album Ep. 131: Take Six - Jazz Albums Feb 22, 2020
    Show notes

Back in late 2015 for episode 84 of LTA, I was joined by my friend and fellow jazzhead, Terry Frost to discuss 6 jazz albums we dug (I did it again for episode 95 in 2016 by myself – not as much fun).

Episode 131 is now available to groove on. Terry joins me again as we stroke our goatees, snap our fingers and say things like “groovy daddy-o”……well, at least the part that's true is that Terry joins me again on the podcast to talk about some more jazz albums we love.

Bear in mind, we talk about this purely as lovers of the broad umbrella that the label “jazz” gives shelter to. We are not purists, nor graduates of Berklee College Of Music….but that’s the point. You can love and articulate the artform without having to be an “expert”. Tune in and be convinced.

Like last time, Terry and I talk decided to Take Six platters that matter (with apologies to Dave Brubeck). We each picked three albums to have a conversation about…..both iconic and little known gems (at least to us). We had a great time and hope you will enjoy. You’ll have to tune in to hear our choices. I won’t reveal them here, but you won’t be moanin’ about our selections……

You can download the episode from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”) or from the website https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/lovethatalbum

My huge thanks to Terry, who was an inspiration to me to start podcasting in the first place back in 2011. Trust me – he KNOWS his cinema history (as well as jazz music). You can hear him on his podcasts Paleo Cinema (https://paleocinema.podbean.com/) and Martian Drive In Podcast (https://martiandrivein.podbean.com/), watch his Youtube Channel Terry Talks Movies (https://www.youtube.com/user/kultgooroo) or catch him every Wednesday evening on ABC Radio Darwin discussing….you guessed it…..films.

Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Go to http://www.rocknrollarchaeology.com/ to check out all the great shows in the Pantheon family.

Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum.

If you’d consider writing an iTunes review we’d be immensely grateful. However, it’d be even better if you told a friend about the podcast and Pantheon – at a barbecue, over coffee, while hitting a six, on social media….whatever way you choose, consider me grateful.

If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in.

Deeper Digs in Rock: Raising Hell - Backstage Tales from the Lives of Metal Legends Feb 21, 2020
    Show notes

Christian goes dark into the metal world again, this time with author Jon Wiederhorn, who has a new book called, Raising Hell: Backstage Tales from the Lives of Metal Legends. From the author of the celebrated classic Louder Than Hell comes an oral history of the badass Heavy Metal lifestyle―the debauchery, demolition, and headbanging dedication―featuring metalhead musicians from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot to Disturbed, Megadeth, Throwdown and more.

In his song “You Can’t Kill Rock and Roll” Ozzy Osbourne sings, “Rock and roll is my religion and my law.” This is the mantra of the metal legends who populate Raising Hell―artists from Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slipknot, Slayer, and Lamb of God to Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Disturbed, Megadeth, and many more! It’s also the guiding principle for underground voices like Misery Index, Gorgoroth, Municipal Waste, and Throwdown.

Through the decades, the metal scene has been populated by colorful individuals who have thwarted convention and lived by their own rules. For many, vice has been virtue, and the opportunity to record albums and tour has been an invitation to push boundaries and blow the lid off a Pandora’s box of riotous experiences: thievery, vandalism, hedonism, the occult, stage mishaps, mosh pit atrocities, and general insanity.

To the figures in this book, metal is a means of banding together to stick a big middle finger to a society that had already decided they didn’t belong. Whether they were oddballs who didn’t fit in or angry kids from troubled backgrounds, metal gave them a sense of identity.

Drawing from 150-plus first-hand interviews with vocalists, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, and drummers, music journalist Jon Wiederhorn offers this collection of wild shenanigans from metal’s heaviest and most iconic acts―the parties, the tours, the mosh pits, the rage, the joy, the sex, the drugs . . . the heavy metal life!Horns up Diggers!
