Make it Stop: U2 - Songs of Innocence with Ashleigh and Maggie of Rock Candy Apr 30, 2020
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Make it Stop we continue to rail against insufferable, self-important celebrities who take themselves way too seriously, this time taking aim at U2 and their 2014 album Songs of Innocence, which was famously auto-downloaded to every iPod in America without consent. That being said, it's not too terrible of an album, with some really standout songs along the way, lots of Bono falsetto, some cool storytelling, and the Edge's trademark echoey guitar sounds. There's also the many, many songs that sound like U2 from the 80s fed through an Imagine Dragons filter, which predictably blow. Helping us dig through the manure to find the diamonds are our dear friends Maggie and Ashleigh of the Rock Candy Podcast, our sister show (and fellow Pantheon fam) with the common stated goal of "making fun of assholes". We do the best we can and have a blast with lots of laughs and unnecessary rambles about Bono's sex life (and his canon relationship with Enya). Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Highway Hi-Fi: Desert Island Recordings - The Trinity Session by The Cowboy Junkies Apr 29, 2020
    Show notes

Faced with the prospect of an untimely death, 25-year-old Mary Lambert Swale drew up an unusually specific last will and testament. The daughter of the wealthy English family, Swale anonymously bequeathed to the Anglican Church of Toronto 5000 sterling, an astronomical sum in 1845, to erect a new church. This gift came with stipulations, however. The building must be constructed in the Gothic Style in a cruciform structure. The congregation must be named Church of the Holy Trinity. And, most importantly, that all people be welcome in the church and that its pews be “free and unappropriated forever.” This was a radical request as a common practice among Anglican churches of the time was charging pew reservations as a way to allow the more affluent to worship undisturbed by the pathetic prayer riff-raff. The Church of the Holy Trinity was dedicated in October 1847 and its doors have ever more been open to all.

It is fitting that this deference to the past, insistence on beauty, and the requirement for openness would be built into a church that 140 years later would play host to a recording session that would make the environment a critical aspect of its music. The Cowboy Junkies would hole up in the Trinity Church and quietly play their haunting Shoegaze Americana into a single microphone nestled in the midst of the five-story Cathedral. The hushed beauty that was committed to tape in that sacred place on the “The Trinity Session” is a commentary against the increasingly digital and frantic world surrounding them.

Rock Candy Ep. 116: Bjork's Post - All Lungs and a Swan Dress Apr 29, 2020
    Show notes

Bjork had been making music for the majority of her life, but many would argue that it was her sophomore release that pushed her into the mainstream. Post saw Bjork truly breaking out of her shell, from the shy and polite girl of Debut, to the strong and unapologetic woman who would eventually become one of the biggest names in art pop. Here we see her getting more comfortable with production and collaborating with even more artists to make this one of the most unique album experiences of our time. Experimental, yet totally still accessible, Post brings to the table everything we love about this Icelandic singer for a perfect album for any audiophile.

Goldmine: Dennis DeYoung of Styx Apr 28, 2020
    Show notes

Vocalist-keyboardist Dennis DeYoung — the frontman of the classic Styx lineup — has a solo album coming out at the end of May called 26 East, Vol. 1 . The title is a reference to DeYoung's Chicago roots — the address of the house he grew up in — and the beginning of the band Styx.

DeYoung has not been with Styx since 1999 but his vocal style is distinctive to the band's sound and it really shows on the album 26 East, Vol. 1 . On this episode we'll play samples of certain album tracks, such as the Styx-sounding "East Of Midnight" and the Julian Lennon duet "In the Good Old Days."

Survivor/Ides of March guitarist Jim Peterik was the catalyst for 26 East, Vol. 1, as he encouraged DeYoung to record again. Along with lead guitarist Mike Aquino and DeYoung's son Matthew, Peterik rounds out the sound of 26 East, Vol. 1, — and DeYoung's vocals are as good as ever. Styx fans will be very pleased!

On this episode, DeYoung will discuss the album's message (including an in-your-face attack on cable news called “With All Due Respect”), future volumes of music and key aspects of Styx's history. And, hopefully, DeYoung will tour later in this year. if pandemic restrictions let up.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 70: The Who Live at Leeds + KRLA Beat + Ron Sexsmith Apr 28, 2020
    Show notes

Content warning: This episode contains discussion of assault (1:02:28–1:05:20) that some listeners may find distressing.

In the 70th episode of our podcast, RBP's Zooming triumvirate talk about the Who's Live at Leeds — "the greatest live album ever made," in many people's H.O. — as it reaches its half-century. Referencing Geoffrey Cannon's unabridged Guardian review from May 1970, Mark & Barney relive memories of seeing the Who live and — with Jasper — explore what made the band such a uniquely powerful live unit.

The two other giants of '60s British pop feature in free pieces by KRLA Beat's Nikki "Eden" Wine, who attempts to explain Beatlemania in 1965 and hangs around a Rolling Stones session in Hollywood in 1966. Mark puts "the Beat" ("America's Pop Music NEWSpaper") into historical context and describes how some of its key female contributors wound up on RBP.

A passionate fan of Ron Sexsmith's for 25 years, Barney intros his own 2011 audio interview with the self-effacing Canadian. There are clips of Ron talking about Interscope signing him at the ripe old age of 31; about his and others' songwriting; and about his painful envy of Neil Diamond's onstage confidence. Finally, Mark & Jasper chew over highlights among the week's new library pieces, including interviews with Chicken Shack (1969), Manitas de Plata (1971) and Creation's Alan McGee (1997); a report on the Jacksons' overblown Victory tour of 1984; a review of Childish Gambino's first London gig (2012); and a 2017 report on allegations of sexual abuse against "queer punk" duo PWR BTTM…

The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.

Pieces discussed: The Who: Live at Leeds, Live at Leeds (Super Deluxe!), Paul Entwistle, Beatlemania, Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Ron Sexsmith audio, Doris Day, Chicken Shack, Manitas de Plata, The Jacksons' Victory tour, Metallica, Belly, Alan McGee, Felt, Humphrey Lyttelton joins Radiohead, Donny Hathaway, Childish Gambino and PWR BTTM.

No Filler: No Doubt - The Beacon Street Collection Apr 28, 2020
    Show notes

Before finding global success with 1995's Tragic Kingdom, ska punk darlings No Doubt were going nowhere fast after signing a record deal at Interscope Records. With little support from the label, no access to studios, and a growing list of 60+ songs under their belt, No Doubt took things into their own hands and built a studio in their garage in Anaheim, California. After a long weekend recording, The Beacon Street Collection was born. Join us as we dive deeper into this DIY gem, a slightly heavier, more raw and punk-inspired album than both their previous self-titled and their mega successful Tragic Kingdom, and proving No Doubt's worthiness on the global stage.
