Rock Candy Ep. 115: Lou Pearlman - You Never Forget Your First Blimp Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

Buckle up for an episode about one of the worst people to ever step into the music business. Lou Pearlman created two of the biggest pop acts in recent memory- Backstreet Boys and N*Sync. But that doesn't make this guy a hero by any means. Not only did he use and manipulate these boy bands, but dozens of other boys and their families. And that's only from his music biz scams. He conned his acts out of millions of dollars and his gold star sociopathy made those around him think his actions were ok. Until they weren't. From even his childhood, Lou was showing red flags to the very few who were willing to put up with him. Hear this all too familiar tale, of a sad man who could only find joy in getting getting ahead, especially at the cost of others.

Make it Stop: Quarantine Stream - Tonetta Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

It's been a weird couple of week/month/years, hasn't it #stoppies? While time is beginning to turn in on itself like a surreal nightmarish fractal this podcast is seemingly one of the last things tethering your hosts to any sort of regular schedule or sense of 'normalcy'. Unfortunately, this week's deep dive into the absolutely fucking insane world of Tonetta just took the nightmare fractal and shat on it, ate it up, and spit it back in our faces. Truly devoted uber-stoppie and ultimate Tonetta stan Matthew wrote in with the tip on ol' Tone, offering this tantalizing description:"Tonetta combines the filthy sex lyrics and Canadian trashiness of Chuggo with the chauvinism and chest-thumping of every weekend warrior band you've seen on open mic night at Dad's favorite pub. And there's often a dash of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs tossed in for a little spice."

If that won't get your blood pumping, what will? Part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Tonetta got you feeling some type of way in your extremities? Get a fun little toy, costume, or mask inspired by Tonetta at adamandeve.com and make sure to use the keyword BADMUSIC so we make money off of you getting horny to this weird ass shit.

    Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 71: Reverse Supergroups Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

Supergroups are kind of lazy. It’s a lazy term for bands that consist of musicians who have already found success elsewhere. It’s a lazy move for musicians who too often want to become relevant again or make some easy money. It’s a lazy means of promotion for record labels who can just plaster the faces of the band members on the cover. It’s a lazy expectation for fans who are happy enough with artists resting on their collective laurels. However, in this laziness, intentions and expectations are in a strange dichotomy of being very low and being very high, a lot of weird and fun stuff can happen. Raging egos, combined with expensive chemicals can generate a lot of damage.

The rise of many of the most well-known supergroups has been documented to a narcoleptic degree; your Creams, Audioslaves, CSNYs, Blind Faiths, Traveling Wilburys, and Bad Englishes, for example. We are not going to bore you with those stories that you probably know already and we don’t have any interest in in the first place. We are going to take a different highway like the podcasting highwaymen we are.

In this episode, we look at the other end of the spectrum, covering the importance of groups that were supergroups except that no one knew it yet. Groups with multiple members who would go on to greatness, but in the nascent stage were still unknowns. Bands that are sometimes called “Reverse Supergroups”. Totally opposite of the serendipitous accidents or the blatant money grabs of the typical supergroups; proto-supergroups are full of drive, creativity, and unchecked enthusiasm. The powers that the members yield may not be known, but it is a lot of fun to see collaborations between up and comers. Making the case that sometimes the music is more important and more lasting when it was created before anyone was paying attention rather than when it was made after people quit caring.

Great places to visit that we mention in the episode:

Chris Sand AKA Sandman the Rappin' Cowboy

People in a Position to Know Vinyl Recordings (PIAPTK)

Let It Roll: The Subversive Side of Classical Music Apr 21, 2020
    Show notes

Host Nate Wilcox welcomes back Ted Gioia to continue their discussion of his book “Music: A Subversive History.” Nate and Ted talk about the less than perfect realities of the lives of the great composers. From the murderous makers of madrigals to the sometimes sordid antics of J.S. Bach to the very problematic Richard Wagner, Ted brings a very different perspective to the men we see as paragons of the establishment.

No Filler Sidetrack: Temple of the Dog Apr 21, 2020
    Show notes

Out of tragedy came a collaboration between two of Seattle's most legendary acts. Lead singer of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood passed away from a heroin overdose in 1990. His former roommate was none other than Chris Cornell, who wrote a couple of songs as a tribute to his late while touring Europe with Soundgarden. Cornell reached out to former Mother Love Bone bandmates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard to make a record out of it, who had just recently invited Eddie Vedder to rehearse for their newly formed band Pearl Jam. The result was Temple of the Dog, a snapshot of two massively successful rock bands months before both hit mainstream success.

    Tracklist

    1. Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
    2. Temple of the Dog - Your Savior
    3. Third Person Lurkin - The Silver Key
    4. David Bowie - God Knows I'm Good

Rock's Backpages Ep. 69: Martin Colyer on Greil Marcus + Lucinda Williams + Rufus Wainwright Apr 20, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, your regular co-hosts are joined for the second time by RBP's original co-founder Martin Colyer, beamed in from Leyton, to offer his invaluable thoughts on Lucinda Williams and Greil Marcus' classic Mystery Train.

Williams prompts near-rapturous approval for her 1998 masterpiece Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, with Mark and Barney similarly admiring its southern poetics and Americana-defining country soul. Conversation flows seamlessly into the impact of Marcus' 1975 game-changing book, newly reissued (with lavish illustrations) by the Folio Society. Discussion of the book's chapters on Elvis Presley and The Band takes the RBP team back to Marcus' profound influence on British fans of American music.

Rounding out the episode's American theme, these four horsemen of the rock apocalypse hear clips from Maureen Paton's 2005 phone interview with the ever-amusing Rufus Wainwright, who covers all the topics you might expect from him, following the release of his remarkable Want albums: addiction, AIDS, America and the Wainwright/McGarrigle clans.

As per usual, Messrs. Pringle, Hoskyns & Murison-Bowie sift through some of the new library pieces that most intrigued them, including a Dawn James Rave interview with Small Face Steve Marriott from 1966; Michael Watts' underwhelmed Melody Maker response to Herbie Hancock's 1974 show at Carnegie Hall; Dave Thompson's fascinating 2004 Goldmine piece on the late Alan ('I Love Rock 'n Roll') Merrill's little-known Japanese glam band Vodka Collins; and, from 2006, a terrific Pete Paphides Times profile Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hütz…

Pieces discussed: Lucinda Williams, Lucinder Williams, Lucindest Williams, Greil Marcus sees The Band, Greil on rock'n'roll, Greil in conversation with Andy Beckett, Rufus Wainwright audio, Small Faces, Why does nobody love the Beatles?, Herbie Hancock, The Beastie Boys, Samantha Fox, Andrew Loog Oldham, Vodka Collins, Teenage Fanclub, Gogol Bordello and Toro y Moi.

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: James Shapiro Apr 19, 2020
    Show notes

Bestselling Shakespeare authority James Shapiro joined us on the Bob Phone from New York, just before the world locked down and the Shakespeare-laden Murder Most Foul unexpectedly dropped. “In a time like this,” he told us, “I find great comfort in the complete works of William Shakespeare and Bob Dylan”. He goes on to link them more closely: “we think of Shakespeare as a word guy - but he collaborated with the greatest musicians of his day. He understood that music is magic” and he happily agrees that “both of them were professional, creative thieves”. Join us for an important episode that celebrates, as James puts it, “the extraordinary simplicity and range” of our two favourite artists.

James Shapiro is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. He’s the author of numerous books including 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, awarded the Samuel Johnson Prize for the best non-fiction book published in Britain; and The Year of Lear: Shakespeare in 1606, awarded the James Tait Black Prize. His latest book, Shakespeare In A Divided America, was a Radio 4 Book of the Week, read by podcast co-presenter Kerry Shale. His essays and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Guardian, the London Review of Books, the New York Review of Books, the TLS, the Sunday Times, the Irish Times, the New Statesman and the Financial Times.
