Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 117: Reviewing Paris with Animoss May 08, 2020
    Show notes

This week's show is a bit of a grab bag, with three distinct segments. First up our buddy, writer/DJ/producer Son Raw joins us at the virtual table for a discussion on the career of MC/producer/label head/activist Paris, a sometimes forgotten figure who played a big role in several strands of rap's history, particularly in our native Bay Area. Next up we have an interview with producer Animoss, an LA native who has produced for Roc Marciano, Chuck Strangers and more, but most notably for Ka. They released a duo album as The Hermit & The Recluse a while back and he has a placement on Ka's excellent new album Descendants of Cain. After that we have a discussion on Mobb Deep's classic sophomore album The Infamous. Beats this week were provided by Darko the Super and we appreciate his contributions. Rock Candy Ep. 117: Lemmy Kilmister - A Weird Game of Duck, Duck, Goose May 08, 2020
    Show notes

A God of rock, this week we are talking about Motorhead cornerstone, Lemmy. Without this man, so many genres of rock would not exist as we know them today. With his unique bass technique, lyrics to scare your parents yet make you think, and a devil may care attitude, we will live on with his influence forever. We dive into his story, from childhood, to his first bands, to his epic life with Motorhead, all leading up to his tragic passing in 2015. This guy is a character with some crazy stories and potentially questionable taste in fashion and decorations. But at the end of the day, we respect this consummate bad ass of a guy.

Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 73: Vinyl Artist Mike Dixon May 06, 2020
    Show notes

If you collect vinyl, you understand the power of tangible, physical media. You know the thrill of finding a new record, staring at the cover art, pouring through the liner notes, and, of course, the disc itself. Holding sound. Looking at the grooves, the labels, the wax. The record is truly a piece of art far beyond the music contained within.

There is perhaps no one who practices this craft with more skill and dedication than Michael Dixon. Based out of Tucson, Arizona, Mike expands the boundaries of vinyl art through creativity, collaboration, and innovation. He views a vinyl record as a blank canvas which will hold unique one-of-a-kind artifacts that are both beautiful and will play music for perpetuity. Drawing from lifelong loves of education, records, outsider art, and re-purposing junk, Mike uses 1940s record cutting lathe machines to handcraft sonic objects. He has made records out of up-cycled plexiglass, laser discs, picnic plates, cd-rs (playable on both turntable and standard CD player), mirrors, place mats, x-rays, and even 90% cacao chocolate. He has made records that use multiple sides, holes, groove patterns, locked grooves, and overlapping or concentric circles. He has made records that are absurdly entertaining and visually stunning.

On top of this, he runs a record label called People In a Position to Know that focuses on putting out records by artists that he believes in and records that are as individual as the bands. He has made ultra-limited releases for a huge range of big name indie artists like The Flaming Lips, Dr Dog, Ariel Pink, Mike Watt, the Microphones, and Grandaddy as well as making essential music available to fans from bands that you should know like The Graves, Sugar Candy Mountain, and Golden Boots. He has also put out music by several of this podcast’s favorite artists including Wooden Wand, Simon Joyner, and Luna.

Oh and when he’s not doing that, he does short run lathe cuts for bands, fixes lathe machines, is a DJ specializing in private press and bizarro honky tonk, and, coolest of all, educates kids at schools and libraries about the science behind sound and the evolution of sound recording.

We were fortunate enough to spend some time with Mike talking about his passion and his art as well as some mutual interests. We strongly encourage you to check out his process and his products by visiting his websites, michaeldixonvinylart.com and piaptk.com. We guarantee you will find incredible unique music and records that you cannot find anywhere else.

Now, it is another chapter in our continuing series of interviewing people who are truly vital to the vinyl record industry and the fans of vinyl records all over the world. Here’s our conversation with lathe master, label owner, and vinyl artist Michael Dixon.

Deeper Digs: Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Scene with Adam Dubin May 05, 2020
    Show notes

This is part one of a very special two part dig into the Bay Area music scene of the late 70’s - early 90’s. We have two documentaries teed up that discuss the two biggest genres of the times, Thrash Metal and Punk.

First up is a discussion with Adam Dubin, director for Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Scene!

In the early 1980’s, a small group of dedicated Bay Area headbangers shunned the hard rock of MTV and Hollywood hairspray bands in favor of a more dangerous brand of metal that became known as thrash! From the tape trading network to the clubs to the record stores and fanzines, director Adam Dubin reveals how the scene nurtured the music and the music spawned a movement.

Murder In The Front Row is told through powerful first person testimony and stunning animation and photography. The film is a social study of a group of young people defying the odds and building something essential for themselves.

Adam Dubin set out to chronicle the ‘80s Bay Area thrash scene in Murder in the Front Row -- an uncensored and boisterous documentary set for release early in 2019. And Murder is certainly a must-watch for hard rock fans; the film contains over fifty interviews with various metal stalwarts (including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament and Death Angel), telling its tall tales through a mix of first-person interviews, animation and narration by comedian Brian Posehn.

But first and foremost, “these are just good stories, and they are very human stories,” says Dubin. “And anyone I’ve shown this to, even those who don't really like the music, have really responded to it."

Narratively, MITFR follows the story of a group of young kids in Northern California with a shared passion for heavy rock bands like UFO, Iron Maiden and Motorhead. “All these bands were mainly from England, and they never really toured the West Coast,” says Dubin. “So these young people started creating their own music, starting their own fanzines, booking clubs and trading tapes. These were people who were adamant about music and the bands, but also each other.”

Dubin, a veteran music and comedy documentarian who got his start co-directing a few classic videos for the Beastie Boys (“Fight For Your Right to Party,” “No Sleep ‘til Brooklyn”), was certainly an ideal match for the film’s subject matter. The New York native and NYU graduate (where he roomed with mega-producer Rick Rubin) has directed a number of documentaries for Metallica over the years, including their multi-platinum “A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica Parts 1 & 2,” "Hit the Lights: The Making of Metallica Through the Never" and "Freeze 'em All: Metallica in Antarctica," along with the band’s music video for “Nothing Else Matters.”

On a personal level, Dubin thinks MITFR serves as a natural evolution for him as a filmmaker and storyteller. “If there’s one theme that runs through all my work, from the Beastie Boys to Metallica to Murder in the First Row, it’s all an attempt to reveal a central truth of rock’n’roll.”
