No Filler: Two-Thirds of Blink 182 Go Dark - Tom Delonge Gets Serious With Box Car Racer May 18, 2020
    Show notes

For our Sidetrack this week we dive into Box Car Racer, the shortly lived side project of Blink 182's Tom Delonge. During recording sessions of Blink's second studio album, "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket", Delonge began experimenting with different guitar stylings with an acoustic in hand. Coupled with an increasingly grim day-to-day life while recovering from a back injury, Delonge also began writing songs with darker and darker lyrics. With the help of Travis Barker behind the kit, Box Car Racer gave Delonge an outlet to express the darker side of his songwriting.

    Tracklist

    1. Box Car Racer - Sorrow
    2. Box Car Racer - Letters To God
    3. Barrie - Habits
    4. Raincoats - Fairytale in the Supermarket
    5. Grass Widow - Tattoo
    6. Box Car Racer - Elevator

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Nathalie Armin May 17, 2020
    Show notes

Actress Nathalie Armin (speaking at a digital distance) has been a Dylan fan since the age of six, when an unknown voice “showed her the colours in her mind” as she lay in the back seat of her father’s car. She graduated to playing Bob games on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company (“we’d whisper Dylan song titles to each other. I always won”) and watching him perform at the Royal Albert Hall (“he was 72. I don’t know any 20 year-olds who have that much swagger”).

The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 -3 is given a serious going over (“what must it be like to be Bob Dylan’s drawer? Blind Willie McTell – it was almost too private to put on an album”), as is the instant classic Murder Most Foul (only just released at the time of this recording). If you crave freewheelin’ discussions of Moonshiner, Talkin’ Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues, House Carpenter, Catfish, Need A Woman and Foot of Pride, please zoom on down and join us.

Nathalie Armin is an Anglo-Iranian actress. She has appeared in many acclaimed stage shows including THE MOTHERFUCKER WITH THE HAT at the National Theatre, LIMEHOUSE at the Donmar Warehouse and Robert Icke’s award-winning production of THE DOCTOR at the Almeida Theatre. Her film and television work includes FINAL SCORE, DENIAL, GROW YOUR OWN, Philip K. Dick’s ELECTRIC DREAMS, the award-wining THE LOST HONOUR OF CHRISTOPHER JEFFERIES, UNFORGOTTEN, MARCELLA and MAIGRET’S DEAD MAN. Nathalie can currently be seen as Yasmine in Channel 4’s hit comedy HOME.

Festival Nation Ep. 9: SoFa Virtual Music Festival - San Jose May 16, 2020
    Show notes

Host Marla Davies explores the SoFa Music Festival - SIP - Shelter in Place Edition. The Music Festival/Street Fair held in April usually attracts between 3,000-5,000 people who travel to the South First Area of Downtown San Jose to listen to between 80-100 bands on more than 10 stages in a 2 block area. And living up to its name there's lots of sofas on the street to hang out on and enjoy the day's activities.

This year the event was virtual with some 20 channels instead of stages where over 100 bands performed from their own play space. The event lasted over 7 hours and brought in some 7,000 unique visitors. This virtual event was so successful that a smaller version has continued on Saturday Nights called #sofasaturdays.

I was so excited to be part of the festival doing both a 'Festival Nation' live podcast and hosting a hangout/vinyl party. Please excuse the quality of the Fil and Casey interviews. They were both from the live event and recorded on Zoom and played back for the podcast. Thanks for understanding. I always try to shoot for the best audio quality and even with the assistance of audio engineer extraordinaire Jerry Danielsen this is the best that we could get. I included the interviews because I felt the conversations were worthy.

If you'd like to check out the Sofa Music Festivals #sofasaturdays and schedule your night at #sched, I'll be doing another live podcast on May 16th at 6. Please look for my channel and join in the fun. sofamusicfestival.com

I'm In Love With That Song: Todd Rundgren - 'Parallel Lines' May 16, 2020
    Show notes

A Todd Rundgren album can vary between pure pop to bossa nova, guitar rock to wild experimentation; like the proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get with the next Rundgren album. Released in 1989, the Nearly Human album is Todd at his best, a pop masterpiece of well-crafted songs performed impeccably, live-in-the-studio. "Parallel Lines" is one of the strongest cuts, initially written for an off-Broadway musical based on the script for a never-produced 3rd Beatles movie.

Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 118: DJ Preservation and Eto May 15, 2020
    Show notes

For our 118th episode we are debuting a new segment, our first time tackling an actual album review. Demone, Dave and Nate all listened to Mozzy's new album Beyond Bulletproof and rate it on a highly scientific yah/meh/nah scale. Next up we have an interview with DJ Preservation who has a record called Eastern Medicine, Western Illness dropping in a few weeks with many of today's best working MCs and a sample palette built from digging in his adopted home of Hong Kong. We conclude with an interview with Eto, an MC who has a unique voice, a lethal pen, and a grimy aesthetic who has worked with DJ Muggs (on the modern classic Hell's Roof) and collaborated with legendary MCs across eras. He has a new album called The Beauty Of It out on May 15th!

Deeper Digs: Turn It Around - The Story of East Bay Punk with Corbett Redford May 14, 2020
    Show notes

Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70’s - early ‘90’s with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal.

This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.

Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California’s pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global.

As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region’s tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley’s all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators’ petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.

Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.

Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. During the production of our film, we conducted over 150 interviews around the United States and amassed over 500 hours of interview footage. Those participating in the documentary include past and current members of: 924 Gilman, Maximumrocknroll, Lookout Records, Green Day, Rancid, Neurosis, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, Yeastie Girlz, Stikky, Samiam, Jawbreaker, Isocracy, Kamala and the Karnivores, Beatnigs, NOFX, Primus, Metallica, Bikini Kill, Bad Religion, Soup, Sweet Baby, Special Forces, Deadly Reign, Christ On Parade, Corrupted Morals, Mr. T Experience, Victims Family, The Lookouts, Monsula, Cringer, Spitboy, Blatz, Filth, Econochrist, Fifteen, Pinhead Gunpowder, Tilt, Pansy Division, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, Fugazi, Flipper, 7 Seconds, Fang, Angry Samoans, Nuisance, Screeching Weasel, Engage, Dicks, Subhumans, The Tubes, Boo Hss Pfft, Verbal Abuse, The Vagrants, Schlong, The Gr'ups, The Tourettes, Pinhead Gunpowder, Tribe 8, Kwik Way, Social Unrest, White Trash Debutantes, Outpunk, DMR, Psycotic Pineapple, Black Fork, Sawhorse, The Skinflutes, The List, Sacrilege BC, No Dogs, Gag Order and more.

Make it Stop: Aerosmith - Music From Another Dimension with Martin Popoff May 14, 2020
    Show notes

Aerosmith are regarded as true legends in the classic rock pantheon. As famous for their backstage escapades and interpersonal drama as for their meticulously layered production, bar rock bangers, and multi-platinum power ballads, the band managed to stay in the spotlight for at least four decades, no small feat indeed. Does that mean they've earned the respect of this podcast's intrepid hosts? Dream on.

Seasoned rock author and interviewer Martin Popoff joins the fray to take on Aeroesmith's most recent and least successful album, 2012's Music From Another Dimension. This 70 minute slog garnered extremely poor reviews and sold a paltry 63,000 copies, a far cry from their previous platinum selling album Just Push Play.

What led to this fall from grace?

Was it the fact that it took six years to make?

Was it the fact that the band members hated each other so much that they wouldn't even visit a hideously injured Steven Tyler in traction?

Or is it just that Aerosmith sucks, has always sucked, and they're finally getting what they deserve?

Find out this week on Make It Stop, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network!
