No Filler Sidetrack: Post Malone & Co. Give Us A Socially Distanced Proper Nirvana Tribute Concert May 05, 2020
    Show notes

As we're wrapping up our 90's rock binge, we thought what better way to do it than to share a few of our favorite non-singles from Post Malone's April 24th Nirvana tribute concert. Playing alongside (while maintaining at least 6 feet distance from each other) songwriter & bassist Brian Lee, guitarist Nick Mack, and legendary drummer Travis Barker, Malone & Co. breathe new life into 15 classic Nirvana tracks, some singles, some deep cuts. Post Malone's special livestream performance was put on to raise money for the WHO in support of their COVID-19 efforts.

    Tracklist

    1. Post Malone - Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle (Nirvana cover)
    2. Post Malone - School (Nirvana cover)
    3. Post Malone - Very Ape (Nirvana cover)
    4. Fishmans - Wasurechau Hitotoki
    5. Built To Spill - Mountain Top (Daniel Johnston cover)
    6. Post Malone - Something In The Way (Nirvana cover)

Rock's Backpages Ep. 71: Jill Furmanovsky on Photography + Errol Brown May 05, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, RBP's very own Terrible Trio are joined by the legendary Jill Furmanovsky for a free-ranging conversation about her long career – and about rock photography in general. Jill describes her lucky 1972 break at London's Rainbow Theatre, talks about shooting Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan, and namechecks fellow snappers Pennie Smith and Barrie Wentzell. Discussion follows about free pieces (on Henry Diltz, Dennis Morris, and Barry Feinstein) by Observer photography critic Sean O'Hagan.

The first of three clips from a 1975 interview with the late Errol Brown prompts reflections on the delicious Hot Chocolate – and what made Brown such a compelling star of '70s pop. Mark then guides us through new library pieces about Andy Williams (1963), the MC5 (1968), Ringo Starr (1972), and Scritti Politti (1988). Barney spotlights articles on Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the state of music journalism in 2018. Jasper wraps up the episode by considering the post-Velvets careers of Lou Reed, John Cale and co., plus an unlikely 2011 live pairing of Foo Fighters and CeeLo Green…

Many thanks to special guest Jill Furmanovsky; visit rockarchive.com to see her photography.

I'm In Love With That Song: Small Faces - 'Tin Soldier' May 02, 2020
    Show notes

The best British band from the '60's that never hit the bigtime in America-- Small Faces. Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones and Ian McLagan would become rock legends due to their future projects (Humble Pie, The Who, The Faces, etc) , but it all started for them here. Small Faces recorded a number of psychedelic pop gems, but "Tin Soldier" may be the pinnacle. Shall we have a listen?

Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 116: The Takeoff with Call Out Culture May 02, 2020
    Show notes

This week we have a special crossover episode with our buddies Alaska, Zilla Rocca and Curly Castro, MCs and hosts of the podcast Call Out Culture. All 6 of us submitted a hip-hop related "hot take" and then everyone had a chance to respond. We call it The Takeoff. It's intended to be a bit punchier than our usual winding discussions. Please click to listen to the rap nerd royal rumble and send us your feedback on the following hot takes:

    1. There are only 2 perfect hip-hop albums, Main Source Breaking Atoms and A Tribe Called Quest Midnight Marauders
    2. Born Like This is DOOM's Best Album
    3. Redman ruined Method Man
    4. Nasir is Nas's 2nd best album
    5. Jay Electronica is overrated and the new album is mid
    6. We all wasted our time listening to back pack rap, the music that has stood up form that era is the music we were all ostensibly against.

Beats for this week's show were submitted by Zilla Rocca from his Bandcamp-exclusive recently-released beat tape. Make sure to tune into Part 2 on Call Out Culture's feed for a deeper discussion!

The Band: A History - Moondog Matinee: Part One May 01, 2020
    Show notes

"That was all we could do at the time. We couldn't get along—we all knew that fairness was a bunch of shit. We all knew we were getting screwed, so we couldn't sit down and create no more music. 'Up on Cripple Creek' and all that stuff was over—all that collaboration was over, and that” said Levon reflecting on the period just prior to the recording of "Moondog Matinee".

In 1971, "Rock of Ages" had led to an unofficial hiatus for The Band. Independently, The Band worked on various projects separately whether it was producing, writing or performing. There were also attempts at getting The Band back together to work on their next studio album. Though, none of those attempts led to anything fruitful. Richard hadn’t written a song, or at least presented a song to the group in some time and Robbie wasn’t offering up much either since he was hitting some serious writer’s block.

Eventually, The Band came out of touring retirement in 1973. Which led to a legendary performance at Watkins Glen with The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers. Feeding off the energy of their live performances and feeling like more of a collective again, and hoping at reviving the creative juices needed to keep on producing albums for Capitol Records it was decided that an album of covers which eventually led to "Moondog Matinee".
