Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 79: The Music of Cults, Part 1 Jun 25, 2020
    Show notes

Cults can manifest themselves in any number of ways. They deal in the currency of human beliefs….religious, political, racist, or terroristic beliefs. And can be delivered in the form of a prophesying doomsday, increasing human potential, or enhancing one’s position using new age techniques, black magic, crystal skulls, anything on Gwyneth Paltrow’s website, or other supernatural means. And while it can be difficult to know exactly when a group is truly a cult, they tend to share three things: a charismatic, often authoritative leader; an indoctrination program into a transcendent belief system; and a system of control through exploitation.

These self-styled leaders prey upon the most malleable members of society. Generally, those are the most stable and predictable of us. Cults use varying means of conditioning and thought reform through deception, isolation, dependency, and fear. One of the more fascinating tools in their horrible toolbox of manipulation is the use of music. As with the case of Bixby and DeGraff, there is a strange balance and codependency of music and mind control. Music is consistently seen playing a role in the establishment and functioning of cults, radical sects, and new religious movements. It can not only bring people together, it can also bring people into the fold.

In this episode, we delve into the bizarre world of music made from within cults. Tunes that were left behind as relics of evidence of exploitation and excessive, destructive devotion. Results that are so strange because they were almost certainly weaponized by a brainwashed minion. Music that is created in a vacuum of narcissism, removed from free thought and outside influence. Hymns to self-appointed prophets, saviors, divine conduits, Christ reincarnates, gurus, faith healers, alien leaders, and Sting (probably). We will look at music from some of the world’s most infamous cults as well as the songs that are so insular, they make no sense outside of their context, even when that context makes no sense either. So, cleanse off your chakra, open your mind, pull on your robes, lace up your Nikes. Today, the music of the cults. Join us, won’t you? Forever?

One of the main resources we used for this episode was WFMU's Music of Mind Control with Micah

See Hear 74: Interview with Boaz Goldberg about 'Tomorrow's Gone' Jun 25, 2020
    Show notes

There have been many 50s music stylists who pay tribute to Elvis and other icons of the rock and roll era but appear locked in a retro time warp. Then there are musicians like Charlie Megira who are consumed by the music alone – they’re doing something new and exciting based on the foundations of 50s rock and roll.

Welcome to episode 74 of See Hear Podcast.

Tim was absent, but Bernie and I spoke with first time director Boaz Goldberg about his 2019 documentary Tomorrow’s Gone. The film serves as both a chronology and a character piece on Israeli guitarist and singer Charlie Megira aka Gabi Abudraham. He started recording music in the mid 90s with music that was drenched in the likes of Santo & Johnny, Duane Eddy, Dick Dale and Sun era Elvis. Boaz met Charlie early on and was convinced he needed to document the music and thoughts of his friend. Charlie’s personal and professional life went in directions neither would have guessed. Sadly, the demons he was wrestling for much of his life got the better of him.

Tomorrow’s Gone serves as a beautiful tribute to a talented musician. We speak about Charlie, the music he loved, his spiritual leanings, the Israeli music industry of the day…..and headless Elvis statuettes. Bernie and I are extremely grateful that Boaz took the time to speak and would urge you to look out for the film on a streaming service or film festival. The story doesn’t have thousands of talking heads talking of Charlie’s importance – he has the music to do that.

Rock Candy Ep. 124: Lady Gaga - Laugh, Cry, and Roll My Eyes Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

This week we cover a relatively new artist (at least as far as our usual repertoire goes) and bring you the story of one Lady Gaga. She started out as some random girl from the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but managed to stand out with her talent and relentless work ethic. Hear how she went from Stefani to Gaga, how she ended up going from rock to pop, and a few missteps she may have had along the way. But at the end of the day, this woman is truly one of a kind. Whether you love her music or can't get over her theatrics, you can't deny that she will live on as a legend of our time.

Make it Stop: Season 3 Finale Part 1- Corey Feldman - 'Angelic 2 The Core' (w/ Tooky Kavanagh and Dicky Stock) Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

Alright Stoppies, you sick fucks. You know what time it is, because you assholes voted for it - and we couldn't be prouder/more disgusted. That's right baby, it's time for a Core-tastrophe of epic proportions - a nightmarish plunge into the twisted mind of the "Skrillex you bought on Wish" aka Corey Feldman, best known for starring in classic 80s movies like Stand By Me and the Lost Boys, but almost equally notorious for his serious drug addiction, history of severe mental illness, and of course ludicrously terrible musical forays. However nothing could prepare the public consciousness for 2016's dubstep-nu-metal-ragtime?!-nightmare "Angelic 2 The Core", where no longer Yung Corey debuted on The Today Show with a badly autotuned cigarette skwawk, skintight pleather jeggings, and a harem of dead eyed fembot "Angels" whose backstory is more fucked up than perhaps anything we've EVER discussed on this show. We somehow convince Boston area comedians Tooky Kavanagh and Dicky Stock to "Go 4 It" with us, and after 3 and a half hours of batshit bananas fuckery (our longest episode yet!), we are definitively worse people for it, and there will be no redemption for our listeners either. Sor-ey about it. We split it up into 2 episodes to stretch out the end of our season, but mostly to save your soul.

Even though we'll be on summer hiatus, we REALLY want to hear from you! Send us an email at makeitstoppodcast@gmail.com and let us know what albums/artists/ideas we should eviscerate on our next season (if Heather doesn't quit before then...). And make sure to give us more of those #dildodollars by going to AdamandEve.com and using keyword BADMUSIC at checkout!

Rock's Backpages Ep. 77: Geoff Travis on Rough Trade + Scritti Politti's Green Gartside Jun 23, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, we welcome legendary Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis into RBP's virtual cupboard. Averse to nostalgia though he is, Geoff looks back on the musical odyssey that took him from suburban north London to San Francisco's City Lights bookstore — and then back to Notting Hill Gate, where the Rough Trade story started in 1976. Mark and Barney ask him about the label's many remarkable artists (from the Fall to the Smiths), the Cartel distribution network he set up, and the company's second coming with the early Noughties signings of the Strokes and the Libertines.

A timely segue takes us into discussion of early Rough Trade postpunks Scritti Politti, whose frontman Green Gartside is heard in clips from a 2006 audio interview by Adam Sweeting. Geoff shares his memories of — and deep respect for — Green, answering questions about the singer's return to Rough Trade after Scritti's major-label successes of the '80s and '90s.

After a passing nod to pieces by RBP's featured writer of the week Pat Blashill — author/photographer of the splendid new Texas is the Reason — Mark leads us gently through his highlights of the week's library additions. Most pleasingly, he welcomes the work of the late Lillian Roxon to RBP in the form of her 1967 report on the new creatures dubbed "Hippies". Other pieces picked out include Isaac Hayes talking about Shaft in 1971 and a 1977 live review of Sylvester performing at San Francisco's Old Waldorf club. Jasper brings the episode to a conclusion by quoting from pieces about Corinne Bailey Rae and North Carolina's electronic duo Sylvan Esso before a final clip of Mr Gartside in full flow takes us out…

Pieces discussed: Rough Trade, Rougher Trade, Roughest Trade, Scritti Politti's Green Gartside audio, Beastie Boys, America's Rave Scene, Photographs of Texas punks, Hippies, Isaac Hayes on Shaft, Sylvester live, Randy Newman, Corinne Bailey Rae and Sylvan Esso.

No Filler: Emery - 'The Weak's End' Jun 22, 2020
    Show notes

Continuing our exploration of the music from our youth, we crank the angst to 10 and go full emo with a listen to Emery's debut album, The Weak's End. While the record leans more toward the poppy, melodic side of the emo spectrum, the sporadic scream and aggressive attack of the 3 guitar players pack an effective punch when utilized. And while some would say that side of this record is under-utilized, we argue that it is what makes the record so effective: the emphasis is on the melody and the clean, non-whiney vocal delivery that is perfectly accentuated by the well-placed screams that are typically associated with emo music. So comb your bangs over your left eye, paint your fingernails black and join us for a trip down Angst Avenue.

    Tracklist:

    1. Emery - Walls
    2. Emery - The Ponytail Parade
    3. Emery - By All Accounts (Today Was A Disaster)
    4. Emery - Bloodless
    5. tricot - 初耳
    6. Disasterpeace - Neutral Town Occupation - The Stealthy Midnight Getaway
