Audio Judo: Interview With Aubrey Powell Jun 29, 2020
    Show notes

On this music-adjacent episode of Audio Judo, Matthew and Kyle interview legendary British graphic designer and filmmaker Aubrey Powell. If you listen to music, you've probably seen some of his work. Along with Storm Thorgerson he was the co-founder of the design firm Hipgnosis which was responsible for some of the most iconic album covers of the 70's and 80's for bands including: Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Yes, Genesis, 10cc, Peter Gabriel, Bad Company, Scorpions, Styx, Black Sabbath, and many more. Perhaps most famously they designed several albums for Pink Floyd including the prismatic rainbow cover for Dark Side Of The Moon. After that, he transitioned into producing/directing films and music videos, many of which are now classics in their own right. His art and design work is frequently on display at museums and art exhibitions throughout the world.

Your homework for this episode is to go check out Aubrey Powell's work, and then drop us a line letting us know which album cover is your favorite. As a bonus, if you have a great story involving one of the albums designed by Hipgnosis (see the complete list here), send it along and we might read it on the podcast.

The Imbalanced History of Rock and Roll: Robert Johnson Revisited Part 1 Jun 29, 2020
    Show notes

The re-release of our double episode about Robert Johnson And The Progenitors Of The Blues, which originally debuted in November 2019, is sparked by our interview with Preston Lauderbach, which will post on 7/6/20. He and Robert Johnson's half-sister, Annye C. Anderson have written the family's story about Mr. J., "Brother Robert: Growing Up With Robert Johnson."

Part One is re-released now, and look for Part 2, our addendum, if you will, on Thursday 7/2/20. That leads up to the release of Brother Robert: Truth Behind A Blues Legend on 7/6. That's a lot of Robert Johnson, but it's groundbreaking, legend shifting, devil-legend dispelling stuff!

Deeper Digs: Once Were Brothers Jun 26, 2020
    Show notes

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist is back in the movies this week for a sit down with director Daniel Roher, where we dig deep into his film "Once Were Brothers” Robbie Robertson and the Band.

ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND is a confessional, cautionary, and occasionally humorous tale of Robertson’s young life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music, The Band. The film is a moving story of Robertson’s personal journey, overcoming adversity and finding camaraderie alongside the four other men who would become his brothers in music, together making their mark on music history.

ONCE WERE BROTHERS blends rare archival footage, photography, iconic songs and interviews with Robertson’s friends and collaborators including Martin Scorsese, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and more.Inspired by Robbie Robertson’s 2017 bestselling memoir “Testimony,” Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band “deeply dissects The Band’s magic and dysfunction” (Rolling Stone) and arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on May 26 from Magnolia Home Entertainment. Presenting a backstage view of The Band’s inner workings and offering audiences an unseen look at their impact on the music industry, the documentary chronicles Robbie’s introduction to music and the group’s revolutionary collaboration with Bob Dylan, to their final tour as one of the most influential groups of their era. 2 From director Daniel Roher (Survivors Rowe), Once Were Brothers unravels the compelling story of the popular rock ‘n’ roll band alongside Robbie and those closest to The Band, including Martin Scorsese, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Ronnie Hawkins and more.

Told through rarely seen archival footage, images and interviews from The Band’s expansive career, and elevated by hit songs from the group, the documentary “captures something golden, incendiary and wistfully beautiful” (The Washington Post). A tribute that will withstand the ages, Once Were Brothers will captivate audiences and provide a deeper understanding of the group’s influence on popular music today. Once Were Brothers will be available for download on digital via Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video, FandangoNOW and more, and on DVD and Blu-ray for the suggested retail prices of $26.98 (DVD) and $29.98 (Blu-Ray) on May 26. The documentary is available now for digital rental.https://www.oncewerebrothers.com/ (edited)
