Rock's Backpages Ep.91: John Simon on Janis Joplin + The Band + Van Morrison + Lillian Roxon Jan 12, 2021
    Show notes

In the new episode of the Rock's Backpages Podcast, we welcome legendary producer, piano player and songwriter John Simon, beamed in from his winter retreat in the Florida Keys. Mere hours before the shocking assault on D.C.'s Capitol building, John reminisces wittily and insightfully about working with The Band, Janis Joplin, Taj Mahal & Bobby Charles — and about his trenchant musical memoir Truth, Lies & Hearsay. He also joins us as we listen to his sometime fellow Woodstocker Van Morrison talking in 1979 about the classic Astral Weeks. Van/Band fanboys Barney, Mark & Martin ask John about The Last Waltz, for which he served as musical director.

The Joplin connection leads to discussion of famed writer and encyclopaedist Lillian Roxon, the pioneering Australian who became a den mother at NYC's Max's Kansas City in the late '60s — and whose Janis obit is one of her featured pieces on our new home page. The RBP team also pays homage to departed stars Gerry Marsden, Geoff Stephens and masked hip hop maverick MF DOOM. Mark and Jasper wrap matters up with remarks on recent RBP library additions, including pieces about Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bruce Springsteen and his pre-E Street band Steel Mill and "Welsh Wu Tang" Goldie Lookin Chain.

Many thanks to special guest John Simon; please visit his website at johnsimonmusic.net for information about his book Truth, Lies & Hearsay and much else besides.

The Rock's Backpages podcast is part of the Pantheon podcast network.

Pieces discussed: John Simon, The Band, Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, Lillian Roxon on Janis, Merseybeat, Gerry Marsden, Winchester Cathedral, MF DOOM, Nor-Cal Folk-Rock Festival, Paul McCartney, Ska Jump, Kenickie, Divine Comedy, Billy Fury, Reggae in the USA, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Radiohead and Goldie Lookin Chain.

    No Filler: Arms & Sleepers - Black Paris 86 Jan 11, 2021
    Show notes

When the duo behind Arms and Sleepers sits down to make music together, they typically turn to movies for inspiration. That was the goal for their 2006 debut record Black Paris 86 after all: to make a soundtrack for an imaginary film. The music is both dark and mysterious, but also warm and beautiful. Blending exceptional drumbeats and killer bass lines with glockenspiels and toy pianos, Arms and Sleepers create a truly unique sound. Join us as we chat about this hidden gem in the ambient downtempo genre.

    Tracklist:

    1. Arms & Sleepers - Arms/Sleepers
    2. Arms & Sleepers - Mission To Prague
    3. Arms & Sleepers - Lausanneut
    4. Arms & Sleepers - Butterflycatcher
    5. Arms & Sleepers - Rooftops/Lanterns
    6. The List Exists - Film Noir Love Story

Shout It Out Loudcast: "Creatures Of The Night" Jan 09, 2021
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review KISS' 10th studio album, Creatures Of The Night. Known as their "Drum Album," KISS gave us their heaviest album and their first without Ace Frehley. Vinnie Vincent makes his first KISS appearance and the album would be their last in makeup until Psycho Circus in 1998.

The guys discuss the band's predicament and all the chaos during the making of the album, the various album covers, along with Eric Carr's incredible performance and this major turning point in KISStory.

They breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and the album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed.

This album definitely needs to be played LOUD, RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES!

    Decibel Geek 436: Best of 2020 Jan 09, 2021
    Show notes

We kick off the new year with a look and listen back at our favorite albums from the past year with Best of 2020! While last year absolutely sucked for the world, it didn't stop the release of tons of great rock and metal music. By our count, there were over 80 albums released in 2020 that deserved our attention. We've poured over them all and narrowed it down to our Top 15 each. In this episode, you'll hear clips from 30 albums released in 2020 and get an explanation of why we chose them.

Lots of legendary acts released new material in 2020. We got new music from the likes of AC/DC, Ace Frehley, Marilyn Manson, Blue Oyster Cult, Bon Jovi, Stryper, Armored Saint and more. Several "supergroup" type projects were released by Revolution Saints, Dirty Shirley, Sons of Apollo, Black Swan, and Tokyo Motor Fist to name a few. Some longtime metal acts returned to the scene with new material such as Primal Fear, Annihilator, Cirith Ungol, Testament and Alcatrazz. Younger bands emerged in 2020 with fresh material such as Massive Wagons, Electric Mob, Speed Stroke, Red City Radio, Prowess, and more. As you can see, we had a lot to choose from.

Check out our Top 15 in this episode and tells us YOUR list in the comments section below. We'd love to hear yours!

We hope you enjoy Best of 2020 - Ep436 and SHARE with a friend!
