I'm In Love With That Song: Deep Purple - 'Burn' Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

I'll happily go out on a limb and say Deep Purple was THE hard rock band of the '70's. They could shift from monster guitar riffs to complex classical-influenced passages to outright improvised jams-- all within one song. Built around a trio of top-of-their-game players (guitar, organ & drums), with a series of distinctive, powerful singers & bassists -- the lineup changes so iconic they became known as Deep Purple Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, etc. This episode, we'll break down the classic Mark III track, "Burn", and listen to all the ingredients in this witch's brew.

"Burn" (Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Jon Lord and Ian Paice) Copyright 1974 Purple (USA) Music

Music Buzzz 04: Steve Hackett (Genesis, GTR, more) Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

    ABOUT STEVE HACKETT:

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up that included Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, who produced six acclaimed studio albums and an EP during Steve's tenure from 1971-1977.

With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces the likes of Bach & others, his own acoustic guitar compositions have gained the admiration of many and his ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic have done the same.

After Genesis, Steve embarked on his solo career pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe supergroup GTR, highly successful in America.

After GTR Steve worked further with many renowned musicians such as Paul Carrick, Bonny Tyler, Chris Squier, John Wetton and Brian May, the latter of who has credited Steve as an early influence. His influence can also be heard through players such as Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen and others.

Steve's solo albums and projects have always possessed a high level of sophistication, along with an ever-present powerful dynamic. Steve's live electric gigs take his fans on an extraordinary journey drawn from a rich musical heritage. Perennial Genesis favorites sit alongside solo classics, while more recent solo material is also included, demonstrating that Steve is an artist still at the very top of his game who is always looking and moving forward.

Hackett's January 2021 release, also discussed on this episode, is Under A Mediterranean Sky.

Crime in Music 61: I'm Son House and My Dad Played Folk Tuba!!! Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

Son of a Folk Tuba player and raised in the Baptist church, his life was a rollercoaster between the bible and the blues. At the age of 9, he started preaching sermons at his local church and singing hymns. After hearing a bottleneck guitar playing blues musician, he changed his focus from God and switched it to guitar.

At a house folic in Lyon, MS while he was playing his guitar and singing the blues, a gunman busts into the party and started shooting. Like all good musicians, he put down his guitar and pulled out his pistol. After shooting the shooter, once the smoke settled, he got arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. After an appeal from a local plantation owner, his case is re-examined and he is released after serving 2 years in one of the worst prisons in America.

After failing out of the music industry, they found him working in a train station in Rochester, NY and thanks to the folk music revival of the 1960's, he becomes a world wide sensation, With a world tour on the horizon, he'd been out of the game so long he needed to be retaught how to play guitar and who better than guitarist from the Canned Heat, Alan Wilson. From being plucked from obscurity, to thrust into the spotlight, tune in to the musical poetry of the pistol packing purveyor of the popular, it's the King of the Delta Blues, Son House.

    Rock N Roll Archaeology: Episode 20 - Ohio Jan 15, 2021
    Show notes

Rock N Roll as the First Draft Of History

We begin in the midwest college town of Kent, Ohio, in the late spring of 1970. We’ll meet three future rockers--students at Kent State University, barely out of their teens--who will be changed forever by what they witness. We’ll check in on Motown, where the fluffy pop “Sound of Young America” is still alive, but there's a big change coming, a movement towards a tougher, more topical sound. We’ll foreshadow that just a little--lots more to come in a later chapter. Rock N Roll is now Rock, and it is mainstreamed now, big and getting bigger. It set out to subvert the dominant paradigm, now it is the dominant paradigm. It can be downright paradoxical at times; defined by its own contradictions. We come back to the campus for the shattering events of May 4th. They inspire a unique musical response, something we really haven’t seen since then.
