The Imbalanced History of Rock and Roll: Two Tone Record - A Checkered History Jan 18, 2021
    Show notes

Two Tone Records. The brains behind the 2nd wave of Ska. A label and music that burned bright and faded quickly. But, the impact of Two Tone Records and the 2nd Wave of Ska is still felt today in Rock and Roll. Jerry Dammers was the brain behind the label and really the catalyst that brought the 2nd Wave of Ska to the forefront of the Punk/Post Punk/New Wave movement. Ray and Markus look at the history of this wonderful label and many of the of the bands who were part of the Two Tone family. The Specials/Coventry Automatics, The Beat(English Beat), Madness, Selecter, The Bodysnatchers, Bad Manners and more. The Movie Dance Craze(1981) is a great example of how live music thrived in the UK during the late 70's and early 80's.

Let It Roll: ICYMI - The Beatles ended Rock & Roll and began Rock Jan 17, 2021

Elijah Wald makes the case for the role of the Beatles (and other leading musicians of their generation like Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys) in inadvertently ending the process of synthesis and cross-pollination that led to the evolution of rock and roll.

Performance Anxiety: Dale Crover (Melvins) Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

Dale Crover joins us. You may remember him from one of his many bands: The Melvins, Altamont, Redd Kross, or maybe The Dale Crover Band, who are releasing a new album. If you’re not familiar with Dale’s solo music, it’s definitely a separate entity from The Melvins. But Dale tells some great stories about Gene Simmons & KISS, meeting Buzz, playing biker sleepover parties as a teen, & Greg Bissonette. He’s also done a little acting. He played both young AND old Neil Young in the Harvest Moon video. There’s a few great stories about that experience too. A quick disclaimer, though. There was a not unusual buffering issue when we recorded. So occasionally Dale may sound like he’s talking a little fast. That’s the buffering. Follow Dale @drcrover on social media. Buy his album, Rat a Tat Tat!. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Please enjoy Dale Crover on Performance Anxiety, won’t you?

After the Deluge 4: The Pretender with Kyle Cox and Dana Cox Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

In episode four I talk about The Pretender with musicians Kyle Cox and Dana Cox, who are also my cousin and my dad respectively. The Pretender is Kyle’s favorite Jackson Browne album, and that record was my dad’s intro to Jackson’s music when it came out. For that reason, I knew going in that I wanted to talk to my family about this one. After a brief intro and a look at the original 1976 Rolling Stone review by Dave Marsh, our conversation starts around the 7:00 mark.

Kyle is the singer for the band Kanan Road, who you can check out at kananroadband.com. You can hear Dana Cox at danacox.bandcamp.com.

Share the podcast, and rate and review it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Connect with me on Twitter at @coxjustin

Also, I made a bracket of Jackson Browne songs so you can put yourself through hell trying to decide on a favorite.

Note: In this episode, we avoid discussing how Jackson Browne’s wife’s suicide might have played into the album. Without concrete knowledge, it wasn’t something we wanted to loosely speculate on in casual conversation.
