Rock's Backpages Ep 111: Miles Marshall Lewis on Kendrick Lamar + Wynton Marsalis + Bob Marley Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

While held captive for 32 months by Somali pirates, writer and Dylan fan Michael Scott Moore had plenty of opportunity to contemplate lyrics, especially All Along The Watchtower. He was given a Bible during his captivity and discovered, in Isaiah, “the ramparts, the princes, the two horsemen and the wildcat. The whole song clicked! It’s about the fall of Babylon! Or Western Capitalism. Or the music business.” His other favourite captivity song was Jokerman (“freedom just around the corner for you”).

We delve into the mysterious Infidels album in detail (“is he accusing the audience or himself with that title? I never got the sense that he left himself out of the equation”). Other topics covered: Dick Dale, Charlie McCoy, Bobbie Gentry, surfing in the Gaza Strip and the philosophy of Richard Mitchell. Don’t miss our most wide-ranging episode so far.

Michael Scott Moore is an award-winning journalist and novelist, author of a comic novel about L.A., Too Much of Nothing, as well as a travel book about surfing, Sweetness and Blood, which was named a best book of 2010 by The Economist. He’s been a visiting professor at the Columbia School of the Arts and worked for several years as an editor and writer at Spiegel Online in Berlin. Michael was kidnapped in early 2012 on a reporting trip to Somalia and held hostage. The Desert and the Sea, his memoir about that ordeal, became an international bestseller.

No Filler: Whatcha Heard? The Duos and Dreampop Edition Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

With every Whatcha Heard episode there's always a few left turns, and at least a 180 that takes us from, for example, vaporwave to doom metal. On this episode however, we managed to bring 10 tracks that work so perfectly together, you'd think we must have planned it. Maybe it's the changing season, or maybe our twin connection was especially deep these past few weeks. Either way, tune in for a collection of 10 dreamy, laid back, lo-key jams that fall mostly under the dreampop umbrella. No left turns here, just a solid playlist suitable for weekend drive.

    Tracklist:

    1. Radiohead - If You Say The Word
    2. Insides - Darling Effect
    3. Men I Trust - 5am Waltz
    4. Fellini Félin, Camel Power Club - Kiss Me
    5. Dismemberment Plan - The Face Of The Earth
    6. Beauty Queen - This Time Around
    7. Bachelor - Back Of My Hand
    8. Death And Vanilla - A Flaw In The Iris
    9. Bad Math - Walls
    10. Sensations Fix - Cold Nose Story
    11. Sweet Trip - Surviving A Smile
    12. St Germain - Sure Thing

Inside The Banjoverse: Alison Brown Oct 04, 2021
    Show notes

I didn't necessarily expect that a banjo player of such renown as Alison Brown (rhyme intended!) was also a Harvard educated MBA until she got side tracked by bluegrass music and Alison Krauss. It's a fascinating story, and as someone who left the "permanent and pensionable" job to pursue music, I'm always interested to talk to others who have opted for the impermanence of a music career over a "stable" job. Alison has of course used her business background to great effect creating Compass Records, and thus has a very unique insight into both sides of the music industry

Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Public Enemy: Number One! Oct 04, 2021
    Show notes

Coming together out of the fertile environment of Adelphi University and its college radio station, Public Enemy burst forth with a wall of power, a collective that changed Hip-Hop and helped forge an unholy alliance with Metal! Their song, "Fight The Power" played an actual role in Spike Jones' "Do The Right Thing," which put the group on the radar of a much wider audience.

In this week's adventure, we explore the band's roots as a loosely associated group of artists who converge via WBAU, coalescing as The Bomb Squad, with unreal "solid work" being set off. It's a rambling, veering off-kilter look at PE, who have been part of both Imbalanced Brothers' musical life!

Hats off to the samplers, the DJs scratchin' it out, the MCs sayin' it! Give it up for The Funky Drummer!!!

Take time to learn stuff about stuff you already know stuff about!

Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!!
