The Real Me: Brian Smith Dec 14, 2021
    Show notes

The Real Me follows the stories of young songwriters and performers with cancer who found hope, healing and connection through music.

Presented by Teen Cancer America, the national non-profit founded by rock icons Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, “The Real Me” highlights the moving experiences of cancer patients in TCA’s Play It Back program, which matches them with music professionals to write, perform and record fully produced studio versions of their original songs.

    Up this week...Brian Smith!

Brian “RiGHtSiDE” Smith came up as an avid underground-punk fan and a hardcore-rap fan. Although he’s mostly moved on from those genres, his deep love and wonder for music has only grown. CR2 records and Mark Brown provided beats Brian wrote many of his songs too and the results are extraordinary. Brian’s natural gift for hooks and lyrics has developed so much that he has collaborated with new Play It Back artists in different genres, indoctrinating them into his sensitive and attention-to- detail writing process. RiGHtSiDE has also taken to performing. He performed his songs in several venues including the 2019 AYA convention in Fort Worth, Texas where he received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd.

AllMusicPodcasts 79: "It Ain't Retro: Daptone Records & The 21st Century Soul Revelation" with Jessica Lipsky Dec 12, 2021
    Show notes

Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent Daptones Recordsl launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone’s records who paid homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever.

Author Jessica Lipsky joins us to chronicle the label’s history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene’s cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. She takes us into the dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre’s heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. The Devil's Music 38: Ace Von Johnson Dec 11, 2021
    Show notes

Guitarist extraordinaire Ace Von Johnson has played with so many bands it’s hard to keep count. Just some of them are glam-metal lords Faster Pussycat, the industrial Neon Coven and a plethora of punk combos including Unwritten Law, U.S. Bombs, Madcap, Cheap Sex and infamous New York hardcore icons Murphy’s Law. He’s been with LA Guns since 2018, and they’ve just released a new album called “Checkered Past” Aside from music, Ace is also a voice actor and canine advocate: he adores pit bulls. A Los Angeles native, he recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee. In this episode, Ace and hostess Pleasant Gehman talk about everything from old school ‘70’s punk to 80’s hair metal, plus the debauched shenanigans that went down when he toured with Faster Pussycat. They riff on low budget horror films, Ed Wood, Vampira, the unsettling ghost sightings Ace has had, and among other things, why The Damned’s Dave Vanian is the sexiest man on earth.
