Ditty TV: Jason Boland Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

We're excited to share a recent conversation that Amy Wright had over video call with Oklahoma native Jason Boland, who along with his band The Stragglers recently released their UFO-inspired, and Shooter Jennings-produced concept album The Light Saw Me. In today’s talk, we dig into the origins of Red Dirt music, the state of pop music today, and of course the writing of The Light Saw Me. This incredibly insightful conversation shines a light on Bob Childers and the growth of the Stillwater music scene, The Desert Oracle radio show based out of Joshua Tree, and much more.

Inside The Banjoverse: Martin Howley Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

Holder of 7 “All Ireland” titles and the first Irish banjo player to play the hallowed Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Martin grew up on a steady diet of Irish and American folk, love of music passed down by his father, Martin, a great folk singer. He has performed with the Chieftains, Carlos Nunez, Mumford and Sons, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Earle amongst others. He once asked president Obama to hold his banjo, Barrack politely declined, most likely as the banjo is quite heavy. Martin, alongside Enda, has forged a new path in Irish banjo and together they've pioneered a new arena of technical skills. With We Banjo 3, he's been afforded the opportunity to hone his stagecraft and legendary banter - he knows all the sports teams and regularly attempts local language lore, often to clumsy mirth-making results. Martin believes that folk music is an antidote to social ills

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Richard Strange Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

Writer and musician Richard Strange insists “If you don’t want to be Bob Dylan, you shouldn’t be writing songs”. He takes us on a journey that starts in his Brixton comprehensive (“I was always bunking off, going to art galleries and the haunted, dingy Soho flesh-pot folk clubs”). He discovers “the boy band of Beat literature: Burroughs, Kerouac and Ginsberg”. And he reminds us that Another Side of Bob Dylan still provides “an embarrassment of riches, lyrically and emotionally”. From witnessing a 1964 Kinks concert (“it blew my mind and changed my life”) to eventually working with Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg, Mr Strange proudly concludes that “Bob Dylan still haunts me”.

Richard Strange is a writer, musician, composer, nightclub host, curator, actor and adventurer. His proto-punk rock band Doctors of Madness first performed in 1975 (supported by the Sex Pistols). He founded the influential mixed-media Cabaret Futura in 1980 and has subsequently worked as an actor, appearing extensively in films (Batman, Mona Lisa, Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves, Gangs of New York and Harry Potter) and on television. His many stage appearances include Tom Waits’ musical fable The Black Rider. His memoir, Strange - Punks and Drunks and Flicks and Kicks was published in 2005. Richard currently presents the weekly radio show Dark Times Radio and is recording again with Doctors of Madness.

Ska Boom: Horace Panter of The Specials Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon.

The goal of this podcast is talk about ska with an emphasis on American ska history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today.

In this episode, I’m speaking with Horace Panter – bassist for The Specials. Horace has been a huge inspiration to me and many others who emulated his choice of a Fender P-bass and his moving octave bass runs drawn from disco and funk.

I’ve met Horace twice. Once when my band opened for Special Beat and he recognized me from being interviewed for a BBC news story about American ska in the early 90s and then again when he was on tour with Ranking Roger. Both times he lived up to his nickname of Sir Horace Gentleman. I'm honored that he wrote the foreword to my book.

We talk about bass guitars, The Specials incendiary performance on Saturday Night Live and his take on America and American ska from his time touring here with The Specials, General Public and Special Beat.

Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George.

Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Johnny Cash At The Carousel Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

This episode is the story of a lost live album by the great Johnny & June Carter Cash, recorded shortly after the legendary Folsom Prison live album. The contrast in energy of these two nights is stark, and part of the discussion. The mood the night of the show was appropriately laid back for San Francisco.

The Carousel Ballroom, which would shortly become the Fillmore (West), hosted the April 24, 1968 concert, and tape was rolling, as was the case when Owlsley Stanley was at the sound board. He recorded most shows that he mixed, which gives purpose to his foundation's modern mission of preservation. This Cash album could do a lot of good in that area.

Markus and Ray talk with William "Hawk" Semins and Pete Bell of The Owlsley Stanley Foundation, about this show, and their ongoing efforts to preserve this audio legacy!

Then they're joined by John Carter Cash, legendary producer and artist, and son of John and June! He gives the family legacy's view of this show, among other things!

An amazing way to explore this unexpected audio treat and to mark our 150th episode!!!

Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!!
