Ska Boom: Punky Reggae Party - The Police Dec 31, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to “Punky Reggae Party” a special audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the historical origins and impact of reggae on popular music that will explore the phenomenon of punk and post-punk bands adopting the sounds of reggae.

So it was only a matter of time before I got around to talking about The Police and their embrace of reggae. If you are of a certain age -- I’m looking at all of my fellow Gen X-ers – then the band’s early records Outlandos D'Amour and Reggatta de Blanc were likely the soundtrack of your middle school and high school years – they most definitely were for me.

The Police took inspiration from Bob Marley, whose accessible reggae mixed with rock influences had established itself widely by the late 70s. It was this Marley influence that The Police synthesized into their sound and which set them apart from many of their contemporaries. And while they were riding the sounds of reggae to success, reggae artists in Jamaica took notice and in one case, the singer Sheila Hylton recorded a better version of "Beds Too Big Without You."

Ska Boom is hosted/co-produced by Marc Wasserman & co-produced/engineered by Rob George.

Ditty TV: David Starr Dec 31, 2021
    Show notes

We're excited to share a conversation that Amy Wright recently had with acclaimed Americana singer-songwriter, Cedaredge, CO’s own, David Starr. Unable to tour his 2020, John Oates-produced album, Beauty & Ruin, Starr decided to record a set of cover songs that have inspired him over the years. Starting in November 2020 with a cover of “Every Kind of People” (by Robert Palmer), Starr consistently released one single a month ending with the crown jewel of the project - “One” by U2. Starr then assembled those covers into an album which he released as Touchstones. Today we learn all about his Touchstones journey, how he’s been holding up through the pandemic, and a whole lot more!

Performance Anxiety: John Barrett (Bass Drum Of Death) Dec 30, 2021
    Show notes

I was lucky enough to have John Barrett of Bass Drum Of Death join me. He talks about growing up in Oxford, Mississippi and how Ole Miss sports can be very frustrating. After moving into a house in Oxford that ended up being home to several bands and a recording studio for his first two albums, he moved to New York City. That really had an impact on his songwriting, one that some of his fans weren’t so happy about. John also had a great way to vet the production team on his last full length album. But when COVID started to shut things down, John moved back to Mississippi and started a twitter beef with Eve 6 that didn’t end how anyone expected it to end. But beyond Twitter beefs, John’s also been busy working on a new Bass Drum Of Death album. He’s hoping to have it ready to go before too long. So follow him on social media @BASSDRUMOFDEATH or just go to bassdrumofdeath.com to get updates or buy the band’s albums. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. You can help support the show at performanceanx.threadless.com or ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety.
