Ditty TV: The Whitmore Sisters Jan 04, 2022
    Show notes

We're really excited to share a conversation that Amy Wright recently had with sisters Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore, two highly accomplished singer-songwriters who are releasing their first album together as The Whitmore Sisters. Titled Ghost Stories, the album is inspired by the loss of family, friends, ex-boyfriends and, on the title track, people who have died by police violence. These “ghosts” chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched, when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.

We dig into how this new record was produced by Chris Masterson, and how, ultimately, Ghost Stories’ cathartic songs embrace the beauty and the experience of living. What came from lock-down and shared experiences; hiking the Grand Canyon at five, playing bars at 15, getting their pilots’ licenses, or just embracing the beauty of living, is an album to take you places and make you feel so alive. Eleanor says she’s always liked Woody Guthrie’s way of looking at it: ‘Music is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.’”

No Filler: 21st Century Dream Pop: Beach House - Teen Dream Jan 04, 2022
    Show notes

After signing to Sub Pop, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand decided it was time to take Beach House's lo-fi signature sound and make everything "bigger". They kept the core ingredients (jangly guitars, organ drones, and Victoria's distinct low, Nico=esque vocals), but added more approachable, hooks and more pop-leaning choruses. You could say they put the "pop" in dream pop more so than any of their predecessors, garnering mainstream success. The band is now synonymous with the genre, and helped to define and shape it for the next generation.

    Tracklist:

    1. Silver Soul
    2. Used To Be (single version 2008)
    3. Used To Be (Teen Dream version)
    4. 10 Mile Stereo
    5. Take Care
    6. Grizzly Bear feat. Victoria Legrand - Slow Life

Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 26 Shout At The Devil Jan 03, 2022
    Show notes

On the 26th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1983 era defining album by Motley Crue, "Shout At The Devil"

The quintessential LA Glam band hit it out of the park with their second album which went quadruple platinum. Shout At The Devil boasted Nikki Sixx's lyrics, Mick Mars' guitar riffs, good looking platinum blond Vince Neil as the frontman and the heavy drums of the crazy Tommy Lee.

Songs include the title track, Too Young To Fall In Love and the legendary Looks That Kill. Made for the era, Motley Crue was just hitting their stride and this killer album is living proof that band was more than just a reputation.

This was a group pick and as usual the guys breakdown the tracks and rank the songs. The boys then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 24 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew Episodes.

So come now children of the beast, be strong and Shout At The Devil!!!

I'm In Love With That Song: Wilson Pickett - "Ninety-Nine And A Half (Won't Do)" Jan 01, 2022
    Show notes

Wilson Pickett only recorded 9 songs during his time at Stax in Memphis, but they were defining records. "Ninety-Nine And A Half (Won't Do)" is the last of those singles, released in May 1966. Though not as well-known as "In The Midnight Hour", "634-5789" or "Mustang Sally", this song is still a stone-cold classic in my book. Let's see what it's made of.

Who Cares About the Rock Hall?: 2021 Year in Review Jan 01, 2022

As the year comes to a close, Joe & Kristen reflect on this year, a great one for the podcast. In 2021, they dove deep on a historically diverse list of nominees + an uncharacteristically large class of inductees, called Rock Hall voters at their home, went to the first induction ceremony since 2019, and did their the show live for the very first time in Cleveland the night before.
