    Show notes

As we barrel into the new year, we share our favorite music in our Best of 2021 episode! The general public (over 30) tends to repeat a tired old cliche; there's no good music being released. As you'll find out in this 2-plus hour mega-episode, that's a load of hogwash! There was a massive amount of great music released in 2021!

In this episode, we each showcase our Top 15 albums released last year. Narrowing down their choices was a tough call. By our estimation, there were 80+ records released last year that were in contention.

There were releases from old favorites such as Alice Cooper, Helloween, Iron Maiden, ACCEPT, LA Guns, Dee Snider, The Wildhearts, Volbeat, Eclipse, and many others. Additionally, there were breakout albums from newer acts such as Dirty Honey, Jax Hollow, Resist & Bite, The L.A. Maybe, Native Sons, The Pretty Reckless, Mammoth WVH, and more. Killer combo releases featuring a combination of great artists were released including The End Machine, Sunbomb, Seven Ravens, Minefield, and many more. As you can see, we had a lot to consider.

So, which artists/albums made our lists? You have to listen to find out!

Do you agree with our picks? Did we get it right? Who did we overlook? What are YOUR top albums of 2021? Let us know in the comments!

As always, we hope you enjoy our Best of 2021 episode and SHARE with a friend! Happy New Year to all of you Decibel Geeks!

Ska Boom: Punky Reggae Party - The Members Jan 08, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to “Punky Reggae Party” a special audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the historical origins and impact of reggae on popular music that will explore the phenomenon of punk and post-punk bands adopting the sounds of reggae.

The Members were one of the prime movers in the era's cross-cultural mix of reggae and punk. The NME wrote of the band in 1978: “Of the many rock bands co-opting reggae into their act, few do so with as much love and style as the The Members.”

I have to admit that the first time I heard 'The Model' it was not the classic Kraftwerk electro version but an awe inspiring reggae cover version recorded by The Members from their 1982 Uprhythm, Downbeat album. It was only a few years later when I became a fan of Kraftwerk that I finally made the connection between the two songs. Its my humble opinion that The Members version of the 'The Model' may be one of the most overlooked and impressive cover songs ever recorded and the band wholeheartedly embrace a full on reggae sound for the song, transforming it into lost classic of the 80's.

Ska Boom is hosted/co-produced by Marc Wasserman & co-produced/engineered by Rob George.

Performance Anxiety: Dead Space Chamber Music Jan 07, 2022
    Show notes

Ellen Southern and Tom Bush of Dead Space Chamber Music join me to discuss their new album. But it’s not just another rock album. Through our discussion, we all decided that the band is the only one in the dark neoclassical ambient jam band genre.

But how did they get to that point? Was it Ellen getting thrown out of orchestra at school? Or was it Tom’s decision to study guitar at night? Regardless of what it was, Ellen and Tom give me a definition of what chamber music is and who the Led Zeppelin of medieval music was. They also reveal some of the strange items they use as instruments to create the right atmosphere in the music. You can really hear all of that in their new album, The Black Hours. Pick it up on Bandcamp as a digital download, CD, or vinyl (which will be available this Spring). Follow them on Instagram @deadspacechambermusic. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. You can support us through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or with merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now pour a mead, summon ye old podcast player, and enjoy my discourse with Ellen and Tom of Dead Space Chamber Music on the Pantheon Podcast Network…forthwith!

Performance Anxiety: LARAAJI Jan 06, 2022
    Show notes

I’m so happy to be joined by ambient pioneer, LARAAJI. We take a trip through his vast musical history, beginning with his early musical influences to changing his career path from architecture or engineering to music, to his discovery of the zither in a pawn shop. Even then, his path to music was not a straight one. In fact, it began in comedy at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. Through performing in parks around NYC, he came into contact with Brian Eno. Actually, Eno approached LARAAJI about recording together.

He has a new collaboration with Christopher Bono called Nous. It’s a very exciting variation of ambient music that stretches the boundaries of the genre. And it all grew from using free association and a musical key in the studio. Check out LARAAJI and NOUS on Our Silent Canvas Records. Follow LARAAJI on social media. I’m pretty sure he’s the only one. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Rate & review the podcast. And help support it through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or performanceanx.threadless.com. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some reflection and contemplation with LARAAJI on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.
