As Maureen says, "I create businesses, tools and experiences that allow people and organizations to unleash their full potential." Take a listen and learn how you can "Lead with Moxie" too!

    050: Steve Harper—The Ripple Effect Dec 26, 2017
    Show notes

I bet you want to know what Rippling is? Or maybe even how to Ripple? You are going to love this interview with Steve Harper. Our conversation is all about how, growing up shy and introverted, he learned to build relationships with people. It wasn't easy. But he came upon this idea about Rippling and it changed his entire life. So what is Rippling? The concept that one connection leads to the next to the next, and then ripples well past where it began, changing people's lives.

As Steve tells us, every action has a reaction. The power of Rippling is very much like that. We take actions on behalf of other people without the expectation of anything in return, and then those Ripples often Ripple back to us in unexpected ways. For companies, Rippling is a form of engagement which turns ordinary customers into evangelists for your product or service.

A serial entrepreneur, professional speaker, author and leading business strategist, Steve has successfully uncovered the secret to creating powerful long-lasting connections and their impact on one's personal and professional life. He has transitioned his years of business experience and unyielding customer focus into a successful consulting practice appropriately called The Ripple Effect, named after his successful book by the same title.

Today, Steve has become one of the most sought-after speakers and business strategists, an expert on the power of deepening and strengthening personal connections through the process of Rippling. His unique and refreshing approach to how and why individuals, organizations and even our society can and must reach outside the box to connect is literally changing lives and impacting corporate bottom lines.

In this episode, Steve Harper and I discuss:
    • How to teach people to listen differently in order to communicate effectively
    • Creating a safe environment for communication produces more involved conversations
    • Good communication creates good relationships
    • How Steve's "8 Minute Ripple" helps people connect on a personal level

048: Scot Hunsaker—Turning Employees into Owners of Your Company Dec 15, 2017
    Show notes

Scot and I had a wonderful time talking about how to turn your employees into owners. This is no small task and very important. You might not be aware of this statistic but 66% of companies will close their doors when their current leadership leaves. I find this number devastating. What will this do to our industries, communities and national economy—much less all those employees who count on their current business leaders? There's a lot to learn here. Listen in!

Today's business leaders are too busy working in the business, not on the business. In our conversation, you will learn not only why you should make this a priority but how to do it. What about your company? Are you planning for your succession before it becomes an unavoidable necessity? Are you preparing your employees now to take on responsibilites in the future?

Scot's background: Having led eight companies during his career, Scot each time has transferred the institutional knowledge and business savvy of the firm to the employees, giving them the confidence to personally invest in the organization. In fact, in his most recent company, his employees bought the firm from him in cash.

Today, Scot is a Vistage speaker, focusing on the concept of Turning Your Employees Into Owners. His specialty is working with businesses on ownership-thinking so they can provide multiple paths to a successful legacy for the company.

As you will hear in our podcast, Scot and I both agree that it is a privilege to own a business. There is not a day that goes by when we are not thinking about the number of lives we impact. We reflect on our professional lives and wonder if our "legacy" really comes down to the people we have teamed up with to create real value for others. Take a listen and let me know if this strikes a chord with you!

In this episode, Scot Hunsaker and I discuss:
    • Transferring institutional knowledge and business savvy to your team to be more successful
    • Why we need to plan for an unpredictable future
    • Building relationships with a shared vision by holding authentic conversations with staff
    • Allowing natural leaders to emerge through strategic planning
    • Teaching leadership teams how to adapt to changes in order to keep products relevant

    047: Tanya Hall—How a Woman CEO Built a Great Publishing Business Dec 11, 2017
    Show notes

I know Tanya Hall rather well. She is the CEO of my publisher, Greenleaf Book Group, headquartered in Austin, Texas, and it makes me very proud to have her as one of our podcast interviews. She has built Greenleaf into an exceptional hybrid publisher that works with and for authors to deliver amazing products. Many of Greenleaf's books win awards (even mine), are top sellers on The New York Times bestseller list and serve the reader with great insights from terrific authors. You really don't want to miss this On The Brink conversation. Take a listen!

Tanya believes that our jobs, bosses, collaborators and team members are in our lives to leave us wiser than today. "From a personal growth perspective," she says, "that's all we can hope for. All of our books are trying to help people lead better lives."

Working first in television in Los Angeles and then flipping a number of houses, Tanya inevitably wanted a tighter community for her two daughters to grow up in. After visiting friends in the Texas Hill Country, she replied to a job posting from Greenleaf Book Group in Austin in 2004 and signed on as Greenleaf employee #4. Austin has been her adopted hometown ever since.

Greenleaf started as a distribution company for self-published authors

Eventually, it built a sales force and enhanced its editorial and publishing capacit, sending Tanya around the company. After becoming COO, she took the reins as CEO in 2014 when Clint Greenleaf, the founder, moved on to other endeavors. Today, Greenleaf is a midsize firm that publishes about 140 titles a year, mostly nonfiction with an emphasis on self-help.

Tanya is herself an author of a book coming out in 2018, "Ideas, Influence and Income," a comprehensive guide to writing, publishing and launching your own book—and monetizing your content.

    A non-traditional publishing house

Greenleaf Book Group provides an alternative model to traditional publishing houses: author-funded, menu-based services. The difference is that authors own their book; they pay Greenleaf service fees and retain a higher percentage of their sales. (Agents are not usually part of the mix.) Greenleaf offers straightforward publishing and distribution services, as well as editing and public relations. Recently, they began providing content marketing—speaking and consultation gigs—and they place the books they publish into bookstores and on Amazon. "Our authors received 35% of the cover price." That's significantly more than an author would receive through a traditional publishing house.

From Tanya's perspective, the key to Greenleaf's success is the culture of respect that permeates the company. "The most positive attribute of working at Greenleaf Book Group is the prevailing attitude of "assume best intent," she states. This basic tenant values and respects each employee's point of view and contribution. "When you unravel issues from the perspective of each person's best intent, the resolution acknowledges everyone." Good advice for us all.

In this episode, Tanya Hall and I discuss:
    • How she was shaped by early opportunities in the media industry
    • How combining self-publishing and traditional publishing is allowing Greenleaf to redefine the publishing industry
    • Achieving impressive results by encouraging collaborative efforts
    • How Greenleaf is modifying content to build a bridge between ideas and audience
    • The importance of finding a publisher that aligns with an author's needs and values

044: Ask Andi series—3 Companies That Saw A Blue Ocean Possibility Dec 01, 2017
    Show notes

I get so excited when I get questions from the field from folks who want to know what we do as anthropologists and what is this Blue Ocean Strategy® stuff and how we help companies change, because that's what we do. We're corporate anthropologists and we work with organizations that need or want to change. (And I can tell you, by and large, they don't want to change.) To illustrate, I share three stories of clients of ours who, after one of our change workshops, all had wonderful "a-ha" moments where they were able to see something that was right in front of them and make changes to take their businesses to new heights. Listen in!

This particular workshop was, "Who will be your customer in 3 years?" It was a little bit of Blue Ocean Strategy—focusing on what is your strategy to keep your business growing and sustainable in fast-changing times—but lots of it was about what possibilities are coming to you that you're not seeing, why aren't you seeing them, and what would happen if you did see them. These were mid-market CEOs who have great companies but were trying to find areas for growth. What was interesting is that they could all articulate a trend that was challenging to them or a pain they were struggling with or new things their clients were asking for, to which they were saying, "No, we don't do that."

There's a great tendency to cling to the familiar and resist the new

Blue Ocean Strategy is all about how to look for unmet needs. You need to listen to the pain points in what a client is talking about, the "what ifs." Focus too on the non-user who comes to your website but doesn't stay around. What are the keywords they're using to find you? How about the emails asking for things that you don't do, so you delete them? Possibilities for growth are all around you but you don't see them.

The three stories I share are indicative of how you can begin to see things with fresh eyes, then put a process in place to tackle unmet needs, or the nonuser. Then at the end of the podcast, I ask you to do three simple things that could open up opportunities for you, too.

3 things for you to do:
    1. Sit on your customer service calls and listen to what's coming in. Every time your service person says, "No, we don't do that," ask why you don't. Then make a list of all the things you could do. If it costs too much to do them all by yourself, think about who you could collaborate with.
    2. Look at your emails, especially all the ones that don't get answered because "You don't do that." This is a very big opportunity coming at you. Look at the keywords. What are people searching for? Are you capturing that search? Everything today is search so you've got to have the right keywords throughout your site or you'll be left behind.
    3. Go hang out with your customers. Watch them actually solve a problem when you're the solution provider. If they're not using your product to solve their problems, why not?

Whatever business you're in, take some time and go explore. Then share with me your stories, please. Send them along to info@simonassociates.net.

    In this episode, I discuss:
    • Listening to the unmet needs of your clientsw or customers
    • Pausing for a moment to see the possibilities all around you that you are ignoring
    • Initiating a new curve rather than waiting for a curve to come to you
    • Why you need to realize what it's like to be a customer of your own business
    • The importance of rethinking the way you operate your business
    • How knowing the ways your clients solve their problems can change your entire business
