187: The BMI Scale is Bogus: Here's Why Jul 21, 2020
    Show notes

I have a feeling you've seen the Instagram graphics stating the ridiculous-ness that is the BMI scale. And I agree, it's bogus. And today's episode I'm going to help you understand why that is.

The best place to start is who came up with the BMI scale. The BMI scale was created by a mathematician, astronomer and statistician, Adophle Quetelet, in 1832 to measure weights across a given population, never designed to measure an individual's health or size. That's almost 200 YEARS AGO since the BMI scale was created! The BMI equation is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

I learned in Fearing the Black Body, that Ancel Keys- the same Keys that created the fear mongering messages surrounding saturated fat that you've heard me mention before, is the same doctor who then took this scale, first called the Quetelet scale, renaming it to the BMI (Body-Mass-Index) scale. Keys even agreed that it was less than ideal scale, but "worked" nonetheless.

It's also important to know the BMI scale was created by Quetelet based on measurements on white European men.

This is problematic in SO many ways. We know women have a different amount of body fat than men. And we know that different races and cultures have different body sizes, that the BMI scale in no way accounts for. But let's dig in deeper...

    In this episode we discuss:

    • The white supremacy origins of the BMI scale
    • How white people have been "controlling" their eating and fat for hundreds of years as a means of justifying slavery
    • The problems with the CDC graphs that have been used to show the "obvious" obesity epidemic
    • How profit and politics have been involved with the BMI scale and the changing categories
    • Why weight does not equal health
    • Addressing true health through healthy behaviors
    • Avoiding stigmatizing and worsening health through weight bias, explaining how correlation does not equal causation
    • What is weight cycling and why dieting only makes everything worse
    • The BMI scales inability to account for muscle mass
    • Quotes from the book, Health at Every Size
    • Reflections and final thoughts for you, how to move forward

    Show notes

This episode begins by sharing a few updates, including a continuation of our conversation on anti-racism work, to encourage you to continue as well. In this episode I share how I am learning the differences between body liberation, the body positive movement and health at every size. Here at Nourishing Minds Nutrition, we will do a better job of showcasing those differences, and giving credit to those the movements were created for, Black marginalized bodies.

Today on the podcast I have Erin Bahadur on the show. I love following and learning from Erin, she is real, honest and kind- and has the CUTEST baby, too! I also love her focus on mental health, and we discuss this at length in today's episode.

Erin is a recovering addict, personal trainer, writer, and mother living in North Carolina. Her blog, Erin's Inside Job, is a journey through her continued recovery and a reminder to others that true wellness comes from within. Active in the mental health and fitness communities, Erin has multiple years of experience in sharing her story with the public, growing her professional career in the face of adversity, and marketing her message to a wide reader base. She has also been featured in such publications as The Huffington Post, Refinery 29, and several others.

185: Can You Eat Organic and Practice Intuitive Eating? Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

Click here to get your hands on my new free mini course, the Summer Reset!

The question of today's podcast episode is...can you eat organic and practice intuitive eating? This episode may need a part two to explain more about what was discussed and get in more detail about the reasons to eat organic for your health, the health of our community and the health of the planet- but think of this as a starter conversation, making sure first you're in a healthy place with your external health values, like eating organic, and making decisions that are aligning within the final principle of intuitive eating, called honor your health with gentle nutrition.

While you are going to hear me share my personal views on why I eat organic in this episode, I believe it is so important to think critically and think for yourself when it comes to anything in the health and wellness world. I would even take it a step further to say I believe those who are against eating organic make valid and important arguments. I believe those messages, from fellow non-diet dietitians, are important to understand and listen to: it can definitely be tricky to say it's okay to recommend or personally eat organic in a world that would make us believe we are morally superior for doing so.

But, that's not my special sauce. My special sauce has always been helping you find the gray area with health and wellness. Helping you see that wellness has SO many tools in the toolbox, you can pick and choose what you'd like. I hope you leave this episode knowing that it's okay to never eat organic and to eat organic, both are okay- you choose what is best for you.

I also wanted to share- that it is my hope that you and I can personally challenge others in the health and wellness space, including proponents of the organic movement, to better understand what is diet culture and remove it from their language and how they share their message. I've always said "diet culture infused health and wellness world" because I do believe it's possible to create a non-diet centric health and wellness world.

So to answer the question of the episode the answer is: yes...but with explanation necessary. In this episode we discuss:

    • How to apply the final principle of intuitive eating where authentic health meets inner attunement and external health values
    • The importance of being non-obsessive and avoid extreme and absolute thinking with health habits, including eating organic
    • Privilege that comes along with the ability to eat organic
    • My personal reasons for eating organic including improving the health of our lands, farms and soils, biodiversity, and the health of the workers
    • Flaws with organic labeling, choosing local and seasonal in your area first and foremost
    • Resources discussed in this episode: the Intuitive Eating workbook, Meg Faletra's website, Meg's blog post on reasons to eat organic

183: What is Seed Cycling and How to Do It Jul 07, 2020
    Show notes

Today's podcast I am going to share my thoughts on a common hormonal trend called seed cycling.

While food (meaning eating ENOUGH), reducing exercise, managing stress and sleeping enough are the primary factors we look for to help our clients get their periods back, and get them consistent, there can be a time and place for gentle nutrition approaches. This includes supplementation, acupuncture and other additions such as seed cycling!

Seed cycling works by helping support women with the nutrients their bodies need at specific phases of their cycle.

Seed cycling can be used to help with conditions such as amenorrhea, when getting off the birth control pill and even to manage PMS and period pain symptoms.

How to do it? Well it's really simple and you'll learn all about it in this episode! You'll also learn:

    • Nutrients that seeds contain to support your menstrual cycle
    • What lignans are and how they support the cycle
    • Why its recommended the seeds are freshly ground
    • Pro's and con's to seed cycling including how gentle and safe it is and also how it lacks true scientific evidence to support it
    • How seed cycling can help you connect to your cyclical nature
    • Fun ways to include the seeds in your diet
    • How to do seed cycling if you don't currently have a cycle or if it's not exactly 28 days

182: Kate Eskuri on Building Foundational Health with Holistic & Realistic Self Care Jul 03, 2020
    Show notes

Click here to get your hands on my new free mini course, the Summer Reset!

In the introduction of today's episode, I share what I'm learning inside the book, Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings. As I read, I continue to learn how from the time the slave trade began in the 1500's and as it continued through the 1800's, the black body was used to justify slavery. White women and men viewed the black body as grotesque, wording depicted from literature quoted in the book from this timeframe. Religion and faith was also used to elevate thinness- believing that the ability to control fatness and control eating was attached with morality.

It's had me reflecting- NO WONDER now in 2020 we have such deeply ingrained beliefs that how we eat and what we look like is attached with superiority and morality. We can see this now ver badum in the health and wellness industry, both the view the controlling your eating makes you superior and that controlling your body weight makes you elevated, or better than. I hope knowing this helps you to pause and think...do you really want to participate in a system that was used as a means to justify oppression and slavery?

    Now, to today's episode!

Today on the podcast we have guest Kate Eskuri. When I found Kate it was like finding a long lost like minded sister in this world of holistic health and well being!

Kate is a registered nurse, going back to school to get her doctorate in integrative health. She believes in traditional practices backed by modern research, which is totally up my alley. In this episode, you'll hear us geek out on our love for blending Eastern and Western philosophies, how to be less black and white about your health and wellness rituals and what it means to practice holistic and realistic self care.

Kate is the author and founder of the Foundation blog and I know if you enjoy today's episode you'll love learning from her blog and following her on Instagram.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Kate's origin story to beginning the Foundation Blog
    • What does foundation mean to Kate and 3 tips or takeaways of foundational health
    • Kate shares about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and the process towards self actualization.
    • How we can simplify health and wellness, making it holistic and realistic
    • Gray area of health and wellness, not going to extremes and also blending together the worlds of Eastern medicine and Western medicine philosophies.
    • How Kate practices wellness without obsession
    • Kate's favorite Primally Pure products: the gua sha stone, clarifying serum and deodorant. I would add this beauty cream as a personal favorite, too!

Thank you to New Chapter for also sponsoring today's episode. I am fascinated by traditions and the culture of food. Across the globe, for thousands of years, food is connected deeply into how we live, how we take care of ourselves and how we enjoy life.

Tradition isn't about chasing the next "it" food, the swaying nutrition research based on the newest study and it's not about a one fits all approach for your calorie allotment for the day. And thats why I'm a huge fan of herbalism, and my go to for any herbs I take- New Chapter, including their new daily multiherbals. There are four multiherbal options for you to choose from, one for holistic health, one to power up, one for restful nights and one to de-stress.

Take the One Daily Multiherbal Sleep Well if you are ready to promote longer, most restful sleep you can wake up feeling refreshed*. Clinical studied tart cherry can significantly increase sleep time and efficiency and even provides naturally occurring melatonin*. Sleep Well also contains relaxing and soothing herbs that are non-habit forming: passionflower, chamomile and ashwagandha.

Or the One Daily Stress Relief formulated with Aswagandha (one of my favorite adaptations to recommend!) to ease physical and mental stress*. It has also been shown to improve well-being and help our bodies respond and react better to stress by lowering cortisol levels*.

180: The What, Why and How of CBD Oil with Ned Co-Founders Ret and Adrian Jun 19, 2020
    Show notes

This episode begins with an update on my anti-racism education and what I'm learning. I share about the book, Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings and how I'm learning how the body, and specifically the female body, was objectified and used as justification for slavery (and later became the root of diet culture). I also took at anti-racism course for wellness professionals this week by Chrissy King, where I was reminded of why wellness is for everyone but not always accessible for all because of oppression and discrimination. I learned how to become a better ally and the course helped me put into action changes we will make in my business to ensure we are an ally today and all days going forward.

Today's podcast is a long time coming, we are finally having a conversation about CBD oil!. I first became a fan of CBD oil when I started using it for my dog to improve his anxiety and seizures, and since have used it for the entire family as part of our wellness routines.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about what exactly CBD is (no it won't make you high!) and sourcing it correctly can be tricky, too. That's why I'm so excited to have the founders of Ned, Ret and Adrian, on the podcast today.

    In this episode we share:

    • How Adrian and Ret started the CBD oil company, Ned and why they are obsessed with making the highest quality, full spectrum CBD you can find
    • The science behind the benefits to CBD and using CBD as a holistic first line of defense
    • How CBD is sourced from the hemp plant and what makes Ned different from other CBD oil companies
    • Easy ways to add CBD into our daily habits and common ailments it can support
    • Ret and Adrian share about the Cycle Collection for the monthly cycle that contain CBD and botanical blends
    • How Ret and Adrian practice wellness without obsession
    • Learn more about Ned and try their products for yourself here!

    About today's podcast sponsors:

Thank you to BLUBlox for sponsoring today's episode. I am sure I am not the only person on the computer all hours of the day! I am grateful to have begin using BLUBlox glasses to help reduce blue light (I've been using the Crystal Computer glasses).

They created their company because they were unhappy with the quality and lack of science backed blue light blocking glasses. The founders sought to create a solution by creating their blue light blocking glasses, backed by science and made under optics laboratory conditions in Australia PLUS they are super stylish.

BLUBLox also gives a pair of reading glasses to someone in need when you purchase a pair of blue light blocking glasses in partnership with Reading Vision.

You can use the code NOURISHINGWOMEN for 15% off your order and free shipping or use this code to receive the 15% discount and free shipping.

Thank you to Ned for sponsoring today's episode! I am thrilled to have Ned as a new podcast sponsor. I have been waiting to share about my love for CBD oil until I could find the right brand that aligned with my beliefs. Ned produces the highest quality full spectrum CBD oil, extracted from organically grown hemp plants in Colorado.

One of the things I love most about Ned is they do not cut corners in their production. Their CBD oil is made from gentle, slow extraction with no high temperatures or high pressure, and zero isolates and synthetic ingredients.

If you want to check out Ned and try them out for yourself, Ned is offering 15% off AND free shipping to my listeners by using the link included here in the shownotes or you can use the code NOURISHINGWOMEN to receive the discount.

You can purchase New Chapter multiherbals on New Chapter's website, CVS and local health food stores.

+ Consult your healthcare provider before use if you have a medical condition; supplements are not a substitute for medical therapy.
