246: Gentle Nutrition Series: Body Food Congruence Mar 16, 2021
    Show notes

I'm excited to be bringing you a new series for the podcast! You asked for more content on gentle nutrition, so we will be beginning a gentle nutrition series, to help you explore what it looks like to care for your health through a non-diet lens.

You can submit topics you'd like to see in this new series by joining our Facebook group or sending me a DM on Instagram.

In this episode, I cover in detail the concept of body food congruence. The Intuitive Eating workbook shares this about body food congruence, "It represents how foods feel in your body- that is, how eating a particular food or meal makes you feel...It is about making food choices based on health and body functioning as well as pleasure."

Listen to this episode to learn more about body food congruence, definitions of authentic health and specific examples to help you understand with ease how to apply this in your own life.

I have decided to add Primally Pure back as a podcast sponsor after a two month pause due to incongruent brand values in who they chose to work with. I have loved and continued to use their products for over 3+ years, and would like to give the company a second opportunity in partnering together.

So with this shared, I would love to share what Primally Pure products I am currently loving. I am enjoying the rose tinted lip balm, plumping face mask and charcoal deodorant, all perfect for entering into the spring season. You can use the code NOURISH for 10% off your first order.

Sabreen Haziq is the host of The Lavender Fix (a humble project born Amid COVID19), a self-help podcast dedicated to sharing stories of perseverance & resilience from real people with real life experiences. In this episode we discuss:

    • Who is Sabreen and her podcast, Lavender Fix, and who it's for. What the world lavender means to Sabreen.
    • The amazing questions Sabreen asks me includes:
    • In this age and time kids are super unhappy with their bodies, and the media isn't helping. There have been studies that show 1 in 4 children has been on some sort of diet by the time he or she is 7 years old- really a time when they should be out there playing. Where do you think it all starts from? When are the seeds of diet-culture sown?
    • How much of a role can parents play in promoting body positivity and intuitive eating right from the start?
    • What is your opinion on the kind of products that are being openly sold across the world strengthening the diet culture- appetite suppressants, metabolism boosters, fat burners, especially with endorsements from such high profile influencers?
    • I'm not sure I fully understand how it's possible to let go and just eat whatever you want. How does the letting go piece work?
    • What if while eating intuitively and your body tells you that you needed 4 cupcakes. Do still you eat till your cravings die out or do you practice portion control? How do you not draw the red lines?
    • I'm sure there are people out there who are trying to get acquainted with intuitive eating while having difficulty celebrating non-scale victories. How does one change that and measure progress differently, especially if they're trying to lose weight?

    • Alissa's experience sharing an image of herself unapologetically eating, and how this had Alissa reflect on why we as women apologize for our eating habits.
    • Alissa's belief that "food can be a powerful entry point into exploring more about ourselves, our beliefs, our values, and what we truly want out of life." and what that looks like in application.
    • The various factors that play into our relationship with food and our body image (i.e. family narratives, socialization, media messages, gender identity, culture and race, trauma, etc).

238: Intuitive Eating is Not Anti Weight Loss Feb 16, 2021
    Show notes

I recently shared this Instagram post: "I'm not anti weight loss. I'm anti the system of beliefs, corporations, businesses, health care providers and influencers telling you the pursuit of thinness should be your highest ambition in life."

I do not judge you for wanting to lose weight. And I'm not anti weight loss altogether. But if you think this is going to be an episode encouraging you to pursue intentional weight loss and intuitive eating, keep listening...

As hard as it will absolutely be, you have to put aside intentional weight loss to fully be free to rediscover intuitive eating.

One of my favorite quotes from the Intuitive Eating book shares, "If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating."

When someone tells you that you can practice mindful eating or IE or food freedom and lose weight, and even diet and lose weight (in the long term) they're promising you something they realistically, and ethically, cannot promise you. Listen to this episode to learn more and learn what will happen to your weight as you practice intuitive eating.
