Caleb Lee Hutchinson - Truth In The Storytelling Jan 05, 2024

Show notes

We're so stoked to have Caleb Lee Hutchinson as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For as long as Caleb Lee Hutchinson has been making music, he has rooted his creative process in the brutal honesty and rich storytelling tradition of country music’s roots. Hutchinson’s voice and wit inspired important collaborations on his 2019 self-titled debut EP, produced by Grammy winner Kristian Bush, and 2021 follow-up, “Slot Machine Syndrome,” produced by Grammy-nominated Americana stalwart, Brent Cobb. In 2022, Caleb self-produced the darkly themed EP, “Songs I’ll Never Sing Again,” and wrote and starred in the accompanying short film.

With his new project, “Southern Galactic,”—produced by multi-genre artist and creator Titanic Sinclair—Hutchinson explores new territory while maintaining his reverence for the honesty and storytelling that seeded his love for country music as a Georgia boy listening to Mississippi John Hurt and Waylon Jennings cassettes with his dad.

This one goes deep talking to Caleb about:

- His mental health struggles.

- The stigma of being a man and dealing with an eating disorder.

- His experience of being runner-up on American idol and what that whole experience did to his mental health.

- Coming to learn that being honest and transparent is truly healing.

- The real horrors of social media comments sections.

- The ways in which Country Music and Punk Rock overlap.

- His new album 'Southern Galactic'.

- Leaning to ignore the inner voice that wants us to fail.

- The impetus of the idea for The Green Couch podcast.

... and a whole lot more!

The 2024 NSR Family Tarot Reading with The Grateful Dead Tarot Creators Erin Cadigan & Liz Jezorski Dec 29, 2023

Show notes

It's the last episode of 2023 for the No Simple Road Family and it had become a tradition for us to have Erin & Liz, creators of The Grateful Dead Tarot deck, on the show to do a reading for the year ahead.

We draw a card for each month and discuss what the cards are laying out for us in the months to come. This coming year has some warnings on the map ahead as well as some incredible growth and insights. Having a reading by the actual creators of the deck itself gives such an incredible insight into what comes up and we're stoked to have you along for the journey with us!

This reading is not just for us, the hosts of NSR, but for the whole entire NSR community.

DISCLAIMER: WE ALREADY DON'T MEAN ANY OF WHAT WE SAID IN THIS EPISODE.

Would you join a cult just to see how it works? Have Jesus as your savior while spun on meth? How about spending 3 days in the Nevada desert with nothing but a couple of gallons of water.....? Well, we would!

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind we recap the Holiday that just passed and try and figure out why the day after Christmas just might be the saddest day of the year. Then it's on to New Years plans and changing things up for 2024 in the 'being healthy' department. We each share the craziest spiritual thing we've done and talk a bit about what drove us to these extremes.

Sean Badders & Jimmy Russel of The Quick & Easy Boys - Magic In The Chaos Dec 22, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have Sean Badders and Jimmy Russel of The Quick & Easy Boys in the studio with us this week

The Quick & Easy Boys are a power-trio out of Portland, Oregon who creates their own blend of rock and roll. Imagine the Minutemen, the Police, and Band of Gypsy’s rolled into one.

Formed in 2005, The Quick & Easy Boys quickly made a name for themselves in Eugene, Oregon before relocating to Portland and becoming a renown nationally touring act. Their shows are an interactive party with electrifying stage antics and profound musical moments as the trio pours out every ounce of their energy, leaving nothing behind. The band has gained the reputation for moving a crowd all-night long whether it be a big festival or a tiny watering hole. Founding members Sean Badders on vocals and bass & Jimmy Russell on vocals and guitar play all the notes. Tyrone Hendrix joined in 2018 on percussion. The Quick & Easy Boys have continued to evolve musically…and audiences continue their enthusiastic calling of “Yeah Bud!” at every show.

We get into:

The origin of their particular brand of 'Funkytonk'.
The Quick & Easy Boys' ethos of doing whatever the hell they want.
Their greatest achievement being their brotherhood.
The question of extraterrestrials being physical, interdimensional, or both.
Finding magic in the chaos on stage.
Why its okay for Sean to break the 'no shorts on stage' rule.
How they strive to create a different experience every single show.

... and so much more!

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind we talk a bit about the superhuman ability to push past your limits and still continue on doing the things that need to be accomplished. We take a look at Conner's Pick from this week's Patreon post, The Grateful Dead 10/12/84 at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine. Jerry was not at his best, as this was right before he went into a coma, and yet he still crushes on stage! It's a perfect illustration to our conversation and shows the supernatural clearly at work.

Finally, we wrap this episode up with each of our Christmas wishes.

Patrick Sanders and Gabe Gebremedhin of Lone Tree - Coming Home Again Dec 15, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited to have returning guests Patrick Sanders & Gabe Gebremedhin of Lone Tree back on No Simple Road this week!

Lone Tree, based in Nairobi, Kenya, is a group of 5 expat teens formed 6 years ago to create a high energy, powerful sound that is contemporary yet firmly rooted in their influences from rock, blues, funk, reggae, and the legacy of great, live music.

The band was originally named Refuge which represented what they are all about: escaping from shallow, inauthentic music. First meant as tongue and cheek, it came to symbolize their drive for social progress.

Lone Tree’s influences are broad and reflect their deep knowledge of music history across many genres. Major influences include the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, Gary Clark Jr., The Wailers, Xavier Rudd, Brittany Howard, Funkadelic, Sublime, Jethro Tull, Groundation, Fleetwood Mac and King Gizzard.

We talk with the guys a bit about:

Moving back from South Africa to the US for college.
The hurdles faced in having a band spread across the globe.
Facing difficult life transitions while staying focused on the goal.
How they managed to record new music while in different countries.
Some of the cultural differences between South Africa and the USA.
Some of the strategy behind releasing new music.
Why stellar performances make such an indelible impact.
What each of their dream venues would be.
Being here in the US for school, what foods are they missing from home.

... and so much more!
