Cam Herdt of the Best Show Ever Podcast - You Can Feel Good Dec 08, 2023

Show notes

We're so stoked to have comedian, fellow podcaster, and No Simple Road Family member Cam Herdt as our guest on the show this week! Cam has taken over social media with his hilarious takes on all walks of life inside the Jam Scene, he hosts his very own Osiris Media podcast the Best Show Ever and co-hosts the Family Reunion show, and he does weekly stand-up comedy and improv out in L.A.

We sat Cam this past Spring at the Phish Hollywood Bowl shows and it's been a love affair of mutual admiration ever since.

We sit down with Cam to talk about:

His introduction to the musical universe.
What are his best songs ever.
How music can help you overcome mental health struggles.
Why reminding ourselves that we think cool things is important.
How improvisation has helped him feel comfortable inside.
How he found his comedic voice.
The joy of poking fun at our community.

... and so much more!

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind we are taking back the meaning of 'The Holidays'! We each decide what holiday we would create if we had liberty to do so and give our reasoning as to why that holiday would for sure be the best thing ever. Then, we get into a chat about taking back the meaning of The Holidays for ourselves. So many of us just do what we've always done without thinking of the reasons why. Well, we get into how we can go about changing that fro ourselves in some big and small ways both!

Avram Brown from The Wheel - Painting Life With Sound Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited to have Avram Brown of 'The Wheel' as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Combining his melodic vocal-driven songcraft with lush kaleidoscopic production and guitar textures, The Wheel spins open an interdimensional portal that weaves indie folk-rock into psychedelic dreamscapes on his debut self-titled album.

It’s no coincidence that Avram Brown named his new musical project The Wheel. In many ways, the singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has come back to where he started on The Wheel’s self-titled debut.

We talk with Avram about:

- Painting life with different hues such as sing-writing, playing guitar, or producing music.
- How 'The Wheel' got its name.
- Producing his first bluegrass band 'Cascade Crescendo'.
- Why this new album should be listened to front to back.
- How being raised on folk music affected and shaped his music perspectives.
- What 3 albums majorly influenced his musical sensibilities.
- How seeing Ravi Shankar at age 15 was a mustical/spiritual experience and changed his life forever.

Hayley Jane - Living Life From The Inside Out Nov 24, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited to have Hayley Jane as our guest this week on No Simple Road!

Hayley Jane’s performance is layered with raw intensity + linguistic prowess. She has a deeply emotive + highly magnetizing presence that’s generating a buzz in the industry.

Hayley pulls inspiration from a variety of styles, including 60s + 70s rock + pop, musical theater, folk, blues, soul, psychedelic, funk + bluegrass. Just as varied, are the many ways she can captivate an audience. Whether the concentrated potency of her solo acoustic performance, the explosive energy + movement of her full band shows, or one of her theatrical performances, she always brings the charisma, humor + passion to move an audience.

Hayley was incredibly vulnerable wit us in this conversation and it's our hope that anyone suffering through addiction or otherwise finds a bit of comfort and a whole lot of support in hearing her story.

We talk with Hayley about:

What finally happened that made her decide to finally get clean and sober.
Being a magical theme park princess.
Figuring out who she actually is onstage.
Becoming a character in order to tell your secrets onstage.
Overcoming the desire to be a 'people pleaser'.
How she fought to overcome negative stories about herself.
The importance of compassion for ourselves and others.
Finding renewed joy and purpose in her new musical project.

Artist Spotlight - Kendall Street Company Nov 22, 2023

Show notes

We are back with another Artist Spotlight with Louis Smith & Ryan Wood of Kendall Street Company!

Virginia's Kendall Street Company are no strnagers to having a wild time. The genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, songwriting prowess of John Prine, experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants. Including elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise musical guests, each Kendall Street Company concert is a n experience unlike any other. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Just remember to stay hydrated.

We sit down with Louis and Ryan for a chat about:

creating the new album 'Separation 95' and what life has been like for them since creating this new work.
Memories of shows where they left feeling on top of the world and also laid flat.
If it's possible to know that you killed it onstage or not, in the moment.
Some antics from Hulaween this year.
How Grateful Dead fans can be persnickety.
The creation process behind some of their amazing videos.
If Becka's Dad is an actual person or not.
Riding the line between scary and comforting.

... and so much more.

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind Vol. 52 Nov 20, 2023

Show notes

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind we get our gratitude on! We're not talking about the trite idea of being grateful. We're talking about the gratitude that comes from down deep in the roots of who we are and the things that give meaning and flavor to the lives we live. What are we grateful for, right now, in this time, in this space?

Our Conductor shares why he's grateful for another trip around the sun and the reason that each year that goes by is such a gift.

We hope all of you out there in the NSR Family have a safe, happy, and love-filled holiday week!

Jeff Chilton of Jay Si Proof - Soaking The Earth With Jazz Nov 17, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have Jeff Chilton of Jay Si Proof in the studio wtih us this as our guest on No Simple Road.

n 2016 Jeff Chilton packed his trombone and guitar onto an Amtrak train out of Ithaca, NY to move west in search of a home and a band. Three years later Jay Si Proof was born in 2019 from the soggy jazz soaked dirt of Portland, OR. Described as "earth jazz alchemists" by Vortex Magazine, the band has evolved through adventurous jazz fusion to low-fi jams to a full fledged funk party, all while prioritizing genuine messages of spirituality, human betterment and a no shits given playfulness.

JSP is a true DIY project with 2 self produced EPs and a slew of grassroots touring efforts along the West Coast. Recorded in a mix of bed rooms and iconic Portland studios (Jackpot, Maproom, and Super Secret Studios) their EPs feature Jay Si Proof's iconic retro and utterly human aesthetic.

We talk with Jeff about:

The expansive beauty of the PNW.
Jay Si Proof coming from the soggy jazz soaked dirt of Portland.
If trombone has always been his first love.
Always searching for 'that queasy feeling' before a performance.
What actually is the job of The Conductor or the Band Leader?
Attempting to take a crowd on a musical journey with performance.
Creating a 'musical picture or scene' when playing live.
The process and progression of the live performance from inside the minds of the musicians mirroring the crowd's experience.

Andy Stepanian of Leon III - Emptying The Bucket Nov 10, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have returning guest Andy Stepanian of Leon III on No Simple Road this week.

If you listen to the show regularly you know that Leon III made a huge impact on our hosts in 2021 with the release of their album 'Antlers In Velvet'. After taking time to tour and record new tracks Andy and his bandmate Mason Brent are back with a new album release... 'Something Is Trying To Change My Mind'.

The new album is equally as striking, often melancholy, dreamy, rough in all the right places, and hits the mark yet again.

We talk with Andy about:

The feeling of wondering if you can find your own magic a second time around.
What the creation of 'Something Is Trying To Change My Mind' looked like as opposed to other recordings.
What to do in times of creative ebb & flow.
Being 'inside' your own creation and not fully being able to see its beauty or fullness.
If it's difficult for him to be an objective listener to his own musical creations.
How he reached a point of not knowing if he could continue creating.
How he rediscovered joy through transformed expectations.
The horrors of being stuck in a van with someone learning to play the banjo.
