Tipsy Ellipses: June 2021, featuring Matt Evans and Michael Lewis

For our June Facebook Live, aka Tipsy Ellipses, we welcomed our brothers to talk all things Dad &….

Matt Evans (Missy’s brother) is a dad and dot, dot, dot equine veterinarian, artist, and stand up comedian. He is a native Austinite who got his undergrad and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. He is married to the world’s most patient woman, Ellen, and they have two daughters (the two most amazing, and Missy’s very favorite, nieces!).

Michael Lewis (Susanne’s brother) is a dad and dot, dot, dot sports writer at the Salt Lake City Tribune for almost 20 years, where he covered everything from college sports, to the Utah Jazz, during which he wrote, “To the Brink” and covered SEVEN Olympic Games. Since 2012 he has been a full time SAH-Dad to the two most amazing nieces in the world, the highlight of which is “that yelling at the kids counts as both work AND leisure.”

We talked and talked, and our brothers were so accommodating with our gameshow-esque quiz. We hope they’ll come back again some day, because this episode was a lot of fun for us!

(Note: Susanne and Missy both claim to have the world’s greatest nieces. All that means is that our nieces are, clearly, in a four-way tie, and will remain so forever and ever.)

    About Tipsy Ellipses

    Episode 24: Shannon Rafalowski

(Trigger warning: eating disorder thoughts and behaviors and self-harm/cutting)

Today’s episode is Part 2 of our discussion with Shannon Rafalowski (from Episode 22, when Shannon joined us to talk about defining our values and mind-body connection.) Our conversation went beyond those topics to include some discussion about eating disorders and cutting behaviors.

After reading about the increase in disordered eating during the pandemic, this topic was top of mind for us. Shannon shared her personal journey, and we talked about raising our awareness of dangerous behaviors – as well as our own responses to triggering moments.

Because we didn’t realize this would be a two-part interview when we recorded it, it will start without our typical introductions and will wrap up without our usual Look, Listen, Learn segment. If you haven’t listened to Episode 22, we highly recommend downloading it as soon as you’re finished to get the complete picture of our discussion.

Episode 23: Morgan Seaman, This Empowered Mom

Morgan Seaman loved her job, and loved being a working mom. After eight years of balancing work and parenthood, though, she felt like there could be a better way to approach things. Morgan sought coaching and counseling for herself, and that led to the birth of This Empowered Mom.

Women, especially moms, struggle with confidence more than any of us would like to admit. Morgan’s coaching helps moms rediscover their confidence, so they can make the best decisions about career and family. One of our favorite takeaways from this episode is: eliminate the word just from your vocabulary. You’re not just doing a thing, or just a mom. You’re so much more (as we say in our intro, you’re a mom and so much more!).

We talked about naming and owning your superpowers. Oh, you have them, trust us. Morgan has brilliant advice around crafting your story and knowing who you are, superpowers and all. Another favorite moment was the idea of taking a compliment, and embracing it, like the five-year-old you would have.

We’re keeping this a No Spoiler Zone, but you must listen to the section about reframing the shoulds. It’s good stuff. (Around 23:30)

    More About Morgan

Morgan is a certified Master Life Coach, respected speaker, and founder of This Empowered Mom Coaching and Consulting, where she is a lifeline to mothers who are leaders in their field. She specializes in helping women rediscover four domains of “Self:” Self-Management, Self-Agency, Self-Compassion, and Self-Care, so they can make decisions from a place of confidence and start feeling empowered again. With a passion for motherhood and mothers in the workforce, she believes that working makes her a better mom, and being a mom makes her a better leader.

She loves comedy, gummy candy, donuts, the original Beverly Hills 90210, running three miles at a time, dancing, and getting up before anyone else in her house. As a mother of two kiddos under 10, she has missed important meetings with sick kids at home; missed school events for big presentations; lived through loss; and celebrated every little milestone. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Whittier College and spent 16 years as a leader in the clinical research industry. In that time, she was promoted through the ranks from Research Associate to Director – leading global teams and multi-million-dollar clinical trials. She utilizes various coaching methodologies, leadership techniques, and draws from her personal experience to deliver life-changing information, perspectives and strategies to her clients.

Defining Your Values & Understanding Mind-Body Connection with Shannon Rafalowski Jun 03, 2021

    Episode 22: Shannon Rafalowski

Almost every week on The Mom &… Podcast, the concept of values comes up. Understanding your personal values allows you to focus on what matters in your life.

Every week when this comes up we think, we really should learn more about how to determine our values. This week, that’s exactly what we did!

Thanks to Shannon Rafalowski, a life and fitness coach, we finally know how to narrow down our values. We learned that values are not set in stone, an idea that makes so much sense we can’t believe we didn’t already understand it. As you age, learn, and have more experiences, your values can shift. You’re not locked in for life.

We talked about limiting beliefs, the idea that we may hold on to something as fact, when it’s actually a learned response. Sometimes, we have to let things go in order to get to our core values. Related: judgement (from others or from within ourselves) and fear hold us back. Acknowledging our core values is a vulnerable process, and Shannon had great advice on how to move through this.

Want to work on your value system? Shannon is generously offering a free exercise to help you start narrowing things down! Just send her an email and she will get you the info.

One of Shannon’s areas of expertise is the mind-body connection. The power of exercise is key for mind-body health. Shannon explained how bi-lateral movement (simply, moving both sides of your body and engaging both sides of your brain), can help rewire our brains and reset our mental state.

Sound complicated? It’s really not. Shannon talked about incorporating small moments of movement that add up throughout the day. Just move your body however you can, even if it’s a short activity. And this is huge: remember to offer up some gratitude for any movement. Exercise doesn’t have to be an intense, major commitment.

We also got a sneak peak at Shannon’s patented TUSH product (you’ll have to watch YouTube to see it). It’s so cool!

    Episode 21: Lauren Smith Brody

As a new mom, Lauren Smith Brody started having candid conversations with her co-workers at Glamour Magazine about how hard it was to parent an infant and succeed at work. Her book, The Fifth Trimester, was born out of these conversations and her ensuing research.

How soon after your baby was born did you feel ready to go back to work? Really ready, not “they gave me 12 weeks off, so I guess I’m ready.” In Lauren’s research, she discovered that most women didn’t start to feel like themselves again for at least 24 weeks.

These days, she helps companies and organizations attract and retain working mothers. We had a fascinating conversation that spanned from how we’re coping with the current Covid environment, to ideas for talking with employers about what you need in order to be successful at work.

One key piece of advice Lauren offered was simple: Vote. Our country will only advance if women have more representation across the board.

“Vote for more people to work in politics at every single level who support the needs that you have,” she said.

We also need women at all levels to be involved in the conversations at work. If the decision-makers are all executives, it’s impossible to know how the decisions impact entry-level or hourly employees. Whether you’re in your fifth trimester or 62nd trimester, she has a wealth of information about getting back to work in an environment that works for you.

    More About Lauren

Lauren Smith Brody is the author of the bestselling book The Fifth Trimester and the founder of The Fifth Trimester consulting, which advances parents’ equity in the workforce. As a leading voice on gender, business, parenting (and now, pandemic parenting), Brody, a mom of two boys and former executive editor of Glamour magazine, is featured frequently as a writer and expert in media including The New York Times, Good Morning America, Slate, Parents, CNN, and network news.

Using her ongoing research, she gives webinars, speaking engagements, and 1:1 coaching to nonprofit and corporate clients including Amazon, Liberty Mutual, BakerHostetler, Blackstone, PwC, Paycom, Rackspace, Sony, Fried Frank, Girl Scouts of America, and dozens more organizations seeking progress for working parents.

How to Remove the “Crisis” from Midlife May 20, 2021

    Episode 20: Lisa Levine

Lisa Levine had a non-crisis midlife crisis (if you’re going to have one, that sounds like the way to do it). She found herself sitting in meetings, thinking,”This is not what I want to talk about.” A longtime fan of Martha Beck, Oprah’s life coach, Lisa realized coaching training was the path for her. Ultimately, she wrote the book on the no-crisis way to embrace this phase of life, Midlife No Crisis: An Audacious Guide to Embracing 50 and Beyond.

NOTE: Lisa was kind enough to create a landing page just for Mom &… Podcast listeners, where you can find Lisa’s Top 7 Tips for Living Audaciously. We didn’t want the link to get buried, so here it is!

    Okay, back to show notes…

We had an inspiring, meaningful conversation about making self discovery a manageable process. It doesn’t have to be a nebulous impossibility. Instead, Lisa has great tips for breaking down the process.

One of our favorite takeaways was that we have to recognize and acknowledge our lizard voice/lizard brain for what it is, and learn how to move forward in spite of that lizard tendency. We are currently working on naming our lizards. Listen to the episode… we promise it makes sense.

If you’re ready to get in touch with your whole self, this episode is for you. Lisa teaches us about the Body Compass. It takes practice, but good news: you can start today (we love a process that doesn’t require hours of instruction before you can launch into it).

    More About Lisa

Lisa is a Certified Life and Health Coach at Audacious Health and Wellness. She helps women who are approaching midlife to create new and healthy habits in the way they think, eat, sleep and move, empowering them to live their lives fully and audaciously. Originally from the East Coast, she currently resides in Seattle spending much of her time writing, drinking matcha, overusing emojis, parentheses and punctuation, enjoying the beauty of the Pacific NorthWest and playing in the kitchen, creating healthy fare for her family and friends.

Defining and Creating Work / Life Balance, with Suzanne Brown May 13, 2021

    Episode 19: Suzanne Brown

When her son was born 10 weeks premature, Suzanne Brown was still working a full-time corporate job. The plan was to continue in that role, but she quickly realized that things needed to change.

After negotiating her role down to part-time, Suzanne started getting questions from other women about how she worked out that deal… and Mompowerment was born. (You have to listen to the episode for the full story. What do you think we’re doing around here, just giving away information for free? Well, yeah, that’s totally what we’re doing. But still. Listen to the episode.)

We had a great conversation about women in the workforce, including the impact of Covid. According to Lareina Yee, McKinsey Senior Partner and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, a speaker at the Mother’s Monday event that we, and Suzanne, attended just before our taping, “Working mothers were one of our more resilient and tested groups during Covid.” We dove into why this is and what it may look like going forward.

Values came up again this week, as knowing what you value helps you determine what matters for you and your family when making career decisions. Or household decisions. All the decisions.

One of our favorite takeaways was this: Managing work-life balance is often as straightforward as talking to the people in your life. Talk to spouses, partners, co-workers, employers – anyone involved in your day-to-day life. Have the conversation. Talk about what’s working and what’s not. Ask for what you need. Sounds simple, but it’s revolutionary.

We also covered some nuts and bolts of staying relevant, so you’re prepared when it’s time to re-enter the workforce or advance in your career. It’s good stuff, and we hope you enjoy listening to all Suzanne had to offer.

    More About Suzanne

Suzanne is a strategic marketing and business consultant. She’s a work-life balance speaker, consultant, and bestselling, 4-time award-winning author.

She empowers company leaders and working moms to think differently about balance and take action. She shares her own experience and extensive research as well as practical tips, insights, and advice from interviews with more than 110 working moms. Find out more at www.mompowerment.com.

How to Set (and Enforce) Boundaries with Family, Friends & Co-workers May 06, 2021
Show notes Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotifySoundCloudStitcherPocketCastsYouTubeOvercastAmazon MusiciHeartRadioPandora Watch This Episode on our YouTube Channel

    Episode 18: Justine Sones

Boundaries. Got any? We don’t. Well, sometimes we have boundaries, and sometimes we feel bad about enforcing them. We’re learning.

Enter: Justine Sones. If you have the time, we recommend pausing after everything Justine says, and just letting it… Simmer. Soak. Absorb into your brain and your soul. We lost count of the number of times we said, “That should be on a shirt!” “Please make a thought of the day calendar!” and the like.

Justine had thoughtful, helpful things to say about setting boundaries, and taking care of ourselves in this bizarre sort-of-post-pandemic world. We talked about growing into your boundaries with your kids. One of Justine’s specialties is helping people learn to sit in the discomfort of doing things that hurt a little, like saying now when your auto-response is yes.

Managing the expectations of our circles, from ourselves, to our immediate household, to our co-workers, takes practice. We talked about ways to start understanding where we fit within each circle, and how to honor our value system in relation to each one. There’s that values word again. It comes up so often in our discussions that we’re starting to think it’s pretty important. (<—- We jest. We KNOW understanding our values is crucial to our overall health.)

Do we say this every week? We do, but we’re saying it again: we could have talked to Justine all day long. In fact, we thought we were wrapping the episode, and then we just kept on talking. Hang in until the very end, after the Look, Listen, Learn segment and Justine drops some serious knowledge on us.

We learned so much (SO. MUCH.) in our short time with Justine, and we vowed to have her back again. Have specific questions for Justine? Call or write us, and we’ll ask her next time.

    More About Justine

Justine Sones is a writer and stress management coach who loves drinking coffee, helping burnt-out humans set boundaries, and talking about things that hurt. During her career as a massage therapist, Justine’s practice was dedicated to exploring the roles that stress, pain, and relaxation play in healing the physical body. She came to realize that the support her clients needed required more than a massage, and made it her mission to help them.

Justine now spends her time writing about feelings and coaching other over-functioning humans develop healthy boundaries and practice sustainable self-care as they navigate the messy intersections of partnering, parenting, -preneuring, and pandemicking.

Balancing Mental and Physical Health While Pursuing Your Passion with Michelle Garrett Apr 29, 2021

    Episode 17: Michelle Garrett

    Please Note:

This episode contains a discussion around depression, with a reference to self-harm and suicide which may be difficult for some listeners. If you need resources for yourself or someone you love, please visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-8255.

We are honored, and so grateful, that Michelle joined us on the Mom &… Podcast to share her story. You can watch the video version of this episode, and all of our episodes over at our YouTube channel.

Becoming a parent does not erase our big dreams and goals, nor does it magically heal those living with mental or physical health challenges. Michelle knows, from personal experience, that balancing all of this can be devastatingly difficult. She is a survivor, and now shares what she has learned to help other women.

Her words lifted us, encouraged us, and gave us hope. One of our major takeaways was that we must listen to our gut, whether it’s a nudge to stop and care for ourselves, or an intuition that tells us someone in our life needs help.

    More about our guest:

Michelle Garrett is a mom and… wife, mental health advocate, and founder of Divas With a Purpose, where she helps female entrepreneurs embrace their inner diva and find the “right for them” balance between family, life, and work.

What we love about Michelle is her ability to cut through the fluff and identify the specific actions women need to take to be successful. She knows that as women with families, time is precious and making the most of it is vital. She helps her clients create daily routines for consistency and productivity that meet the unique demands of their lives.

Ultimately, Michelle’s goal is to provide women in business the peace of mind by being able to balance family, life, and work in a way that feels good for them. Links to her social media accounts, books, Soul Refresh sets and courses are below.

    Missy:

    • The Apology Line Podcast from Wondery

    Susanne:

    • Susanne re-learned about being an ally, and not making the oppressed person do all of the work. It’s something she knew, but it’s always good to hear it again. Not every person in a marginalized community is an activist. Don’t expect your one gay friend to be your educator; don’t make them do the work. She gave one of our former guests, Kelly Rippon, a shout out, too.
