Master Your Money & Career Break Challenges Apr 22, 2021
Show notes Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotifySoundCloudStitcherPocketCastsYouTubeOvercastAmazon MusiciHeartRadioPandora

This week we are un-taboo-ing (that’s a thing, right?) an often taboo subject: money. Our guest is Janice Scholl, the host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Choose from the icons above to listen and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.

If you would like to watch the video version of this episode, it is available on our YouTube channel here.

We know we say this every week, but we could have talked to Janice all day long.* She is so wise, and turned a conversation about money into the most relaxed, fun conversation we’ve ever had about finances.

We wish we’d met Janice 15 years ago, when our first-borns were babies. We didn’t know each other then, yet we were on similar paths. Susanne was a marketing executive, and Missy was a corporate community relations expert-turned-freelance marketing writer. And then we had babies.

Thanks to immense privilege, we both made a conscious decision to quit or cut back at work, so that we could stay home with our children. Those decisions, however, were not without hefty amounts of angst, self-doubt, and many, MANY questions. If only we’d had Janice to guide us.

There is good news, though: we – and you – have Janice now! This episode is only the beginning, and we hope to have her back again. Many money matters get covered in this hour… but we don’t even come close to talking about everything. If you have any questions for Janice, definitely send them to us so we can answer them next time around.

A little more about our guest:

In addition to the podcast, Janice is a coach and speaker. She helps professional and business-owner moms master their money and career break challenges. Her work helps moms feel confident, while building a strong financial foundation for their family.

Janice is passionate about illuminating the work-life struggle that causes working mothers to leave professional jobs to raise their families, and she has created Strategic Sabbaticals, a coaching program designed to amplify the growth and opportunity women find through a career break, ensuring a successful return to paid work.

*Side effect of having AMAZING guests. They are all lovely to talk to, and that means we will never, ever have a short episode.

Surviving Midlife Indignities & Career Changes with Kristin van Ogtrop Apr 15, 2021

    Episode 15: Kristin van Ogtrop

Thinking about making a big career change? Considering a huge shift, whether from home-to-work or work-to-home or something in between? This is the episode for you! And if you happen to be in mid-life, you’re in for a great time. You can watch a video version of this episode over at our YouTube channel.

Kristin van Ogtrop is a literary agent at InkWell Management. In her previous life, she wrote a column called The Amateur for Time, was the editor in chief of Real Simple, and was named by Fortune as one of the “55 Most Influential Women on Twitter,” a designation she now finds absurd. She was a contributor to the New York Times bestseller The Bitch in the Houseand the author of Just Let Me Lie Down: Necessary Terms for the Half-Insane Working Mom.

Her latest book, Did I Say That Out Loud? Midlife Indignities and How to Survive Them, is out now from Little, Brown Spark. If you get a Mother’s Day gift from us this year, it will be this book.

On the list of things we cover this week, you can look forward to hearing about:

    • Thyroid disease
    • People who put empty containers back in the pantry (aka everyone we live with)
    • Adventures in dentistry

We also talk a lot about making a career change in mid-life. It’s scary, exhilarating, and vulnerable to hit the restart button after 25 years in one career. Whether you are going back to work, or doing a 180 in your career, or leaving the workforce, there are truths for you in this episode.

Kristin’s new book is excellent. It’s smart and funny, and made us feel much less alone in our own mid-life indignities. One of our favorite parts of the book was these three questions (you’ll have to listen to the episode and read the book for all the details):

    1. Who Am I?
    2. Where Am I Going?
    3. Why Am I Going There?

A fantastic discussion ensued about using those three questions to identify your core values, and understand how you view the world. Knowing this about yourself can help you determine what is next.

Topics, People, Etc. That Come Up in This Episode

    • I Care A Lot (a call back to an earlier LLL)
    • Melatonin

Even Pros Can Benefit from Coaching – How a Coach Can Help with Career Pivots Apr 08, 2021
Show notes Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotifySoundCloudStitcherPocketCastsYouTubeOvercastAmazon MusiciHeartRadioPandora

    Episode 13: KJ Dell’Antonia

This week, our guest is KJ Dell’Antonia, the author of the viral New York Times essay Why I Didn’t Answer Your Email, the former editor of the Times’ Motherlode blog, and the author of the book How to Be a Happier Parent. Her debut novel, The Chicken Sisters, is a timely, humorous exploration of the same themes she focuses on in her journalism: the importance of finding joy in our families, the challenge of figuring out what makes us happy and the need to value the people in front of us more than the ones in our phones and laptops, every single time. We learned a lot from KJ, but our biggest takeaway was that even pros can benefit from coaching as KJ partnered with a book coach to pivot from non-fiction to fiction writing with incredible success. You can also watch a video version of the podcast on our YouTube channel.

Her earlier book, How to Be a Happier Parent: Raising a family, having a life, and loving (almost) every minute of it, is a practical, thoroughly researched guide to bringing more joy into our everyday lives, not by doing more (please, no) but by doing things differently.

KJ’s career has taken her from law school to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, from dot-com business development executive to journalist. And now, she’s a novelist. We got to talk with KJ about her path, including what worked and what didn’t.

Writers in our audience will love hearing KJ discuss the process of writing a novel. Missy felt encouraged when KJ talked about how many rewrites are involved in finishing one novel. Our conversation also included what it was like to find out that The Chicken Sisters was a Reese’s Book Club pick, and how it feels to tackle novel number two after such success.

One of the themes that came out of this interview was investing in ourselves, whether that’s finding a mentor, paying a coach, or just giving ourselves the time and space to work. As KJ explains, sometimes a coach is the difference between dreaming of something and actually getting it done. Even professionals can benefit from expert coaching.

Career Solutions for People Dealing with Chronic Health & Life Issues Apr 01, 2021
Show notes Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotifySoundCloudStitcherPocketCastsYouTubeOvercastAmazon MusiciHeartRadioPandora

    Episode 13: Alison Tedford

Alison Tedford is a mom & … writer, marketer, indigenous (Kwakiutl First Nation) activist based in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and author of the soon to be released, Chronic Profit – Building My Business While Managing Persistent Pain, which is filled with career solutions for people dealing with chronic health & life issues.

Alison takes us through her journey of working through chronic health issues to build a successful business, including the struggle to get diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. As a highly driven person, Alison is able to assess challenges in her health, her businesses, and her personal life, and create successful solutions. One of the big lessons we took away was to know – and remember – our value. Women often downplay their worth, and even negotiate down when they should stand firm in their worth.

We talked about times we’ve felt stuck, and how we moved past that feeling. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to do things differently than you used to. Alison challenged the people in her life, and challenged us, to not question betting on ourselves. Big changes can look scary, but why wouldn’t we bet on ourselves?

Somehow, Alison manages to have free time, and we talked about using that time to refresh and rejuvenate. Whether it’s a favorite bath bomb or a silly photo session, we all need a reset sometimes. We also touch on successful co-parenting, and how Alison and her (not quite) ex make it work for their family.

Alison is an advocate for Indigenous Canadians, and has some amazing stories about her own family. Related: she’s working on launching a charitable coffee company called Subversive Sips. It’s early days yet, but the plans are in place, and it is such a cool concept! Speaking of businesses, Alison and her sister are launching an inclusive clothing line, too. Are you tired yet? Alison may be superhuman. Or just a super, super human.

She comes from a long line of good rebels and highly creative people. It’s no wonder she became the incredible human she is! Fun fact: Alison once taught pole dancing lessons, but lucky for you there is no video of us getting some pointers from her!

Episode 12: Kelly Rippon, Mom &… Leading by Example

Kelly Rippon, started her consulting company, Authentic Change, in 2006, with the mission of changing the world one conversation at a time. Those conversations, combined with her work as a college instructor, corporate trainer, and single mother of six incredible children, including her oldest son, Olympic medalist, Adam, prompted her to write Parent Up. The book strives to empower readers by helping them develop an effective leadership perspective that encompasses resiliency, empathy, and optimism.

While Kelly’s book is titled Parent Up, it applies to all areas of life, from professional settings to personal challenges. We talk about how we tend to limit ourselves and lock ourselves into a particular role. Having a specific career, or specializing in a certain field, should not be limiting. You have options, and are never “just a mom” or “just a lawyer” or “just” anything.

Life has seasons, and sometimes we take on a different role completely, or add another layer. Maybe we cut way back and focus on one thing only, whether that is parenting, or writing a book, or going back to school. In any of these scenarios, we can use the principles laid out in Parent Up.

We talk some about raising exceptional children, too. We’d like to point out that ALL children are exceptional. Sometimes, however, the needs of a child place unique demands on our family life. Kelly talks about how she managed that as a single parent. Once again, the lessons she learned can be applied to managing complicated work situations or any personal situation where you may need to do some juggling.

We also talk a bit about being allies for the LGBTQ community, and what that looks like for all of us. Kelly is the parent of a now famously-out son, and Susanne runs Informed Parents of Austin, a group that advocates for LGBTQ students in her school district.

Show notes Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotifySoundCloudStitcherPocketCastsYouTubeOvercastAmazon MusiciHeartRadioPandora

It’s Spring Break here in Austin so today’s episode was taped during a Facebook Live on our Mom & … Facebook Page last week. You can watch the full video at our Facebook Page or over at our YouTube Channel.

This week marks a full year of Covid lock down for the Stevens and Kerns families. As strange and difficult as this past year has been for us, we know there are others who are marking ‘anniversaries’ that are much more painful – we are thinking of you and your families.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to thank the business and organizations that have helped bring a sense of normalcy and have helped fill our hearts (and stomachs) this past year. You can hear the full shout-outs during the episode, but here are links to just some of our favorites.

    Yummy food

    Mom & … Gratitude – with Nancy Davis Kho Mar 11, 2021

    Episode 10: Nancy Davis Kho

Nancy Davis Kho is a speaker, author, and podcaster whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and NPR affiliate KQED. Nancy’s book THE THANK-YOU PROJECT: Cultivating Happiness One Letter of Gratitude at a Time was published by Running Press in December 2019. Nancy covers “the years between being hip and breaking one” at MidlifeMixtape.com and on the Midlife Mixtape Podcast, available on all major podcast platforms.

Our conversation traverses from play, to grief, to work and activism, to gratitude. Believe it or not there’s a clear connection from one to the other. Nancy tells us how her career has evolved from international business and technology to the creative work she does now, as well as how she continues to be active in both. We talk about having the freedom to switch things up. You don’t have to be this or that. You can be both or neither.

Activism is important to Nancy, and to us, leading to a discussion about making activism a priority, whether it’s your career or something you do in addition to your career. In fact, there are options to get involved in as little as one hour a week.

In talking about Nancy’s book, The Thank You Project, we were incredibly moved by how it came to be. Writing the book changed her in a deep and meaningful way; talking about it forever changed how we look at the concept of gratitude. We hope our listeners feel the same, and together we can make gratitude part of our growth journeys.

    Episode 1.9: Jenny Remington, Habits

This week is the second part of our conversation with Jenny Remington. Basically, we had a blast talking to her about StrengthsFinder and got carried away. The next thing we knew, we were talking about habits and realized we had a second episode on our hands.

The topic of habits is something that comes up a lot when we chat. We both have responsibilities to our families, our friends, the non-profits we passionately support, the boards we sit on, our jobs, our hobbies-turned-passion projects, and… ourselves.

It’s a lot to fit in a day. Sometimes it’s a lot to fit in many, many days.

Good habits go a long way in making it all work.

We both struggle to give up the bad habits and make the good ones stick. Missy fesses up to some of the things she is personally struggling with (good times, admitting all of that).

This episode is sort of a habits primer, and we’re building a future, longer episode around the topic. We’d love feedback from our community, so leave us a message on the What’s Your Question page or on any of our socials with answers to:

    1. What is your greatest struggle when it comes to building good habits?
    2. Do you have bad habits that you don’t feel fully ready to give up?
    3. Or, bad habits that you are OVER, but can’t seem to kick?
    4. If you’ve read Atomic Habits, what concepts from the book helped you?
    5. What do you want to ask a future habits-guru guest on our show?

Hello – Welcome to the Mom & … Podcast Tipsy Ellipses episode with Susanne & Missy. If this is your first time joining us, the Tipsy Ellipses episodes are different than our regular numbered episodes.

On the first of each month, we do a Facebook Live on our Mom &… Podcast Page where we recap our top learnings from the episodes the previous month and give a sneak peek at guests coming up with the weeks ahead. It’s super casual, just the two of us in various forms of leisure wear- it’s live so there’s no editing, and as the title says, occasionally there is an adult beverage involved, but certainly not required to join in the fun.

The next day, we upload it here so those who prefer audio over video can still listen in. If there’s any part you would like to watch, the video still lives up on our Mom and Podcast Facebook Page and on our You tube channel.

Without further ado, here’s March’s Tipsy Ellipses episode. Enjoy!
