    Mindful As A Mother

Hiiiiiii. Lindsay and Paige here: two therapists and mothers with a mission to provide affordable evidence based resources to parents of adhd & autistic children. When we’re not working with children and their parents in therapy or recording for the pod, you can find us hanging out at home with our families, surviving on diet coke or coffee, and binge-watching true crime. We’re here to make the intersection between therapy and parenting relatable with education, support, and SMASHING parental stigma. Grab your favorite caffeinated beverage and buckle up for the ride.

Not only is co-regulation an evolutionary skill, but it’s an integral part in our children being able to learn how to regulate their emotions on their own someday. Show notes

This week we’re deep-diving into self-care. What comes to your mind when we mention self-care? If it’s expensive and bougie, then we highly recommend you take a listen. Together, we talk through several different ideas that you can utilize for self-care, why it’s important, and how to weave it throughout your day. The first rule of this episode: Take what works and leave what doesn’t, and always remember: self-care is intimately defined by you, and you are the only one who can ensure what you’re doing is self-care.

What comes to mind when you hear Radical Acceptance? As humans, we spend a lot of time being upset about things that aren’t in our control. Radical acceptance is taking the concept that we can’t change what’s happening, so how do we navigate the challenge? We talk through why this is important in parenting neurodivergent children and how to implement this concept to create a smoother experience in your parenting journey.

Welcome back to Mindful As A Mother! Today we are welcoming a special guest all the way from Austria, Carina Wahringer. Carina is a strong example of a neurodivergent mother with neurodivergent children just trying to wing parenthood like the rest of us. Together, we talk about how Carina knew she’s neurodivergent, what it's like parenting as a neurodivergent individual and parenting neurodivergent children, and her biggest struggles and strengths in neurodivergence.

    PACE

Playfulness: Stressed brains respond to calm, playful faces and tones of voice. You can counter stress by introducing playfulness. Playfulness can defuse arousal, reduce conflict, and increase connectedness.

Acceptance: Communicating with our words and actions that their feelings, thoughts, urges, and perceptions and accepted completely and trusting that what they are feeling is their truth in that moment. Radically accept what’s in front of you and focus on supporting your child through it regardless of how it triggers you.

Curiosity: be curious about where the behavior comes from. Be curious enough to truly understand your child’s perspective. Open-ended questions or contemplating these questions yourself. Curiosity can also promote their self-reflection on their feelings and behaviors.

Empathy: Genuinely attempt to understand your child’s position. Focus on connection over correction. by demonstrating how difficult an experience might be for THEM, you are comforting them and letting them know they do not have to deal with their distress alone.
