WGB #100: Mets in Four Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

ONE HUNDRED EPISODES of the good, the bad and the Mets-ie. We started this podcast having never even heard of our Lord and savior uncle Stevie Cohen and look at us now! It's been a wild ride with highs and lows and wild boars, but one hundred episodes later and we're still standing and this team is still up four games in the NL East. We zig and we zag, but no matter the schedule or opponent we always seem to find ourselves with a four-game cushion. If you had told us that we'd have to play with mostly bench players and a taxed pitching staff and bullpen and we'd MAINTAIN a division lead over the course of that entire stretch, we'd call you crazy, but with June coming to a close we're still here. The offense hasn't looked good, that's just a fact, but no matter the circumstance we continue to, time and time again, find ways to pull out a W even when we shouldn't. Yes, it helps that the division is dreadful, but we're not exactly in fighting shape either. Nimmo should be back this week with JD Davis not too far behind, meaning that we'll have our first, full opening day lineup in nearly 2 months! For the fans complaining, have some perspective people. Things could have gone much, much worse and now we're coming to full strength right in time for the break. It's not often that the baseballs gods smile upon us so stop looking a gift horse in the mouth! The guys breakdown the Phillies series that saw our bats fall silent and their bullpen and defense implode. It wasn't a pretty sight to see, but as long as teams keep allowing us to stick around, we're gonna find ways to make them pay for it. We discuss the clutch hits from Lindor, Dom and Conforto, the great outings from the staff and why Bryce Harper really doesn't give the Mets faithful too much cause for concern. KFC also claims a new "guy," Clem alerts us to a swagger jacking and we determine whether or not that viral Jeter jersey is a troll job or the cruelest of punishments for one fan. This marathon schedule is not for the faint of heart, but we gotta believe that come all-star break we'll be in prime position to take this thing to a new level.

WGB: IL Episode Jun 25, 2021
    Show notes

This episode is dedicated to the IL. It is NOT episode 100 since KFC wasn't available to record, but we needed to do something after the panic of this week's 4-game series with the Braves. We were all over the place with worry from the deGrom start to the Gsellman/Familia injuries to the Stroman hip issue, not to mention the lack of offense that directly stemmed from the Donnie Stevenson social media posts. It was a rollercoaster week for the Mets that ended up being all-to-do about nothing. We lost some key pieces in the bullpen, but gained some big bats in the lineup. A soul for a soul that's how this team goes. McNeil and Conforto came back and right out of the gate showed everyone what we've been missing. Such a breath of fresh air to have professional bats all strung together and protection for Lindor who can finally relax and start mashing like we all know he can. The guys breakdown the deGrom start, attack the Lindorks for their unfair treatment of our best pitching coach, discuss the lineup potential with all this depth and look ahead to a schedule that will take every bit of the squad to make it through. We're gonna need some guys to step up in a big way if we want to make it to the all-star break still in first place, but this is where contenders are born- forged by fire and the flames of a July hell. The team won't have another off day until July 12th, but we gotta believe that we're up for the challenge since we've already taken everything this season has thrown at us!

    WGB #99: Donnie Isn't a Hit Anymore Jun 22, 2021
    Show notes

When the offense was in trouble and the team was barely treading water, we needed a hero to save us. A larger than life folk hero that could swing a bat like Paul Bunyan and whose motto in life was to 'hit dingers.' We needed Donnie "Diesel" Stevenson because the Mets needed some levity to their extremely slow start and Mets fans needed just about anything else to focus on other than the lack of base hits with runners in scoring position. It was funny, quirky and natural and that's what Mets fans appreciated. What we don't appreciate is the forced spectacle of this past weekend. Pete Alonso had gone social media silent (right call) for the entire year and came out of hibernation in one of the cheesiest ways possible. Listen, we get trying to drum up some all-star votes, but not at the cost of the team's positive momentum. It doesn't have any direct impact on the on-field play, but if your team's been in first place 6 weeks running, you don't need gimmicks, you just need to keep winning. And now, since the emergence of this WWE wannabe Donnie the Mets' bats have gone silent. You don't spit in the face of the baseball gods, you don't bring the circus into the clubhouse and you certainly don't cut full length videos trying to jump from fourth to first in voting. You get on the field and actually hit your way to the top. The team back slid, barely scoring any runs over the 4 game series with the Nationals. Has the clock finally struck midnight on the BenchMob's Ball? Is the shine of the replaceMets wearing off to show the true blue Triple-A players? Probably, but this was never a longterm solution anyway. We made it through an avalanche of injuries and back out the other side with hardly a scratch on us and that's all you could ask for. The team remains 4 games ahead (as of this recording) and our big bats are finally coming back. Jeff McNeil is here with Michael Conforto on the way and the lineup that we were hoping for can actually start to get back on track. Will that mean Rojas has to make some tough decisions? Yes. Will he make the right ones? Who knows. All we know is we have a nice cushion and in-division games to widen the field even more. The gauntlet is nearly over, but not before a double header death march starting with the Braves and Phillies. deGrom has already been tapped to start game 1 whether we like it or not and KFC could not be more upset with that decision. It just feels like a disaster waiting to happen, but if the doctors and tests say he's good then we gotta believe that he'll continue to ascend towards goat-ness. Keep the ace in your prayers and buckle up because if there is a June Swoon looming, nows the time to snuff it out.

    WGB #98: DEFCON deGrom Jun 18, 2021
    Show notes

Jacob deGrom can strike out the world, but can he stay healthy enough to do it? After 3 perfect innings and 8 Ks, deGrom left the game again yet again with injury. This time it was right shoulder soreness, but so far this year he's had carousel of aggravations and irritations. From back stiffness and right lat soreness to right side tightness and right flexor tendinitis it seems like with every new start comes another discomfort for deGrom. How worried should we be? That's anyone's guess including the doctors. deGrom has had more MRIs this season than earned runs allowed, but with each new test there's no conclusive evidence to point to injury. The guys debate whether he should shut himself down for the next few starts to make sure his body is right or if he should push through on what has been a historic season so far. It's a tough call, but not so tough when your team has the largest divisional lead in baseball. Would we love to have Jake out there throwing every fifth day, pushing his era into the low 0.40s? Of course, but do we need him to win ballgames when we have ace caliber starts from Taijuan Walker and Marcus Stroman in the meantime? Probably not. Thus the question remains: Is our starter hurt or injured? Should he push it or pullback for the much more important stretch down the line? KFC and Clem present their cases We also talk about the illars MVP quality play, the bench mob being the backbone of the team and when we can expect to get our starters back this month. The guys talk trade deadline, crybaby Cole and much more. We don't want to get too ahead of ourselves since we're still in the thick of things in June, but with two statement series wins against the Padres and Cubs we gotta believe that this team is setting themselves up for something special this season.

WGB #97: Call To The MayDay Line Ft. Trevor May Jun 15, 2021
    Show notes

Trevor May joins the show to talk all things Mets in 2021. We discuss his arrival to the big apple, what it's like dealing with the 'gremlin' Mets trolls online and the dynamics of the clubhouse for this season. It's no surprise that the guy who vlogs and live streams his video game career is also great on the mic. We got some awesome and candid stories about welcoming the ReplaceMets, the DNA of the group and where each player fits in the makeup of the club. We got his perspective on the rat-raccoon sage, the relationships between the players and uncle Stevie and what his expectations are for the team. He wouldn't put a hard number on regular season totals, but let's just say that we gotta believe that he's a 96er with the rest of us. This was an all around fun interview and we even got a little insight on the hot new celebration that's going to take the Citi by storm! Stay churvy Mets fans

WGB #96: Bloody Bats and Conspiracy Theories Jun 11, 2021
    Show notes

We've got Kevin Pillar hitting 2 HRs with his bloody bat like he's Negan from 'The Walking Dead,' Rob Manfred and the owners changing baseballs and conspiring against the pitchers AND hitters hitting free agency and absolutely no facts to back any of it up! It's been a wild week since our last episode and the team has only played two games. We had David Peterson take another step towards becoming the new Steven Matz, we had the offense wake up in a BIG WAY to salvage the 2-game series with the Orioles and we had conspiracies galore. We've been saying it all along, but this team's DNA just knows how to win. When you can turn the page that easily from a loss to an inferior team and not dwell on the past, that's when you know you've got staying power. Bench players, hurt super stars, unsung heroes- doesn't matter, winners win. Jacob deGrom rightfully gets all the hype for being the best pitcher in baseball, but in the shadow of his greatness sits not one, but two elite, all-star caliber pitchers who are in the top 15 in ERA. Taijuan Walker is not only pitching like an ace, he's the steal of the offseason. Trevor Bauer is making $102 million for 3 years, while Walker is making 23 pitching to a lower ERA. He's been a revelation to the rotation and a much needed boost during these tough times. Speaking of the times, the team has held first place for 40+ days and that number isn't resetting any time soon. Even with the June Swoon Gauntlet, it's not really conceivable that any skid can last with the way the pitching staff is built because 1-3 are solid and help is (hopefully) on the way. The guys discuss who in the BenchMob has earned a staring title even when the big names come back, which relievers and Triple-A players should be re-called to take over for Peterson and Luchessi and whether or not it's too premature to plan for October. Some might call it luck, we'd like to call it- well luck we guess so what? We can't help it if every team in the division gives up ground when we win. It's not every day the the pieces fall into place the way they have, but we gotta believe that when push comes to shove and we go head to head that we'll only further the distance on our way to the promise land and 96 wins!

WGB #95: deGoat Does It Again Jun 08, 2021
    Show notes

At this point how much more can you say about Jacob deGrom? Apparently A TON because we had to jump on for a bonus episode this week just to break down his truly insane numbers. Every time you think you've seen it all, Jake goes out there and tops himself. This isn't just Mount Rushmore of Mets stuff anymore, this is Mount Rushmore of Major League Baseball. Bob Gibson dominated the league to the point where they had to lower the mound and through nine starts deGoat has better numbers... Not only is he dominating, he's putting up video game numbers while doing it. 100+ MPH fastballs, murderball sliders, obliterating lineups the third time through the order, Jake can do it all. The craziest part? He doesn't even have to be a one man wrecking crew this year. He's actually got a cast of teammates that can make some noise too! Stro is dealin' Walker is cruising and the BenchMob ain't nothing to f*ck with. Look no further than the Padres series to see that these guys can bang with the big boys. You've got the face of baseball and the only rotation that can stack up against our own versus a bunch of backups and we STILL SPLIT THE SERIES. Some teams just have that X-Factor for winning and it's pretty clear that it's here. Not only do they have it, but it's making Kevin feel like Clem might have short changed the team with his prediction! It's not every day that KFC shows this much positivity so you better get on the bandwagon now while there's still room because you gotta believe

    WGB #94: June Swoon? Jun 04, 2021
    Show notes

We've got KFC and Clem BACK IN STUDIO for this week's episode and it was good vibes for all. The guys watched the conclusion of the DBacks' series live and we jump into the June Swoon curse. We're not gonna sugar coat it for you folks, June has been a disaster of a month for as long as anyone can remember, but that was the old Mets. Those were teams that crumbled under pressure and didn't have the INFRASTRUCTURE to dig themselves out of a hole. This team doesn't even have all of its all-stars and even KFC can't be swayed away from the positivity! The June Swoon is dead and it's Good Juju June from here on out. Is the team running into a buzzsaw having to face the Padres for 7 games? Yup, but guess who the Padres have to face. That's right, the New York Mets, Taijuan Walker and Jacob deGrom. We're not the healthiest of teams right now, but that doesn't mean we aren't good. The team is solid and will only continue to get better and we need to start acting like it. Who knows? This could end up being our coming out party to the entire league. Maybe the Mets start making teams shake in their boots. The big bats of Pete, Dom, Lindor and McCann seem to be waking up and with a rotation and bullpen to back it up we gotta believe that this June will be different.

    WGB #93: #IAmSorryRayRamirez May 28, 2021
    Show notes

It's not physically possible to talk New York sports without at least mentioning what the Knicks have been doing in the mecca lately. 2:19-13:50 Talkin' Knicks and revitalizing the city. The Mets season has been a rollercoaster ride thus far, but despite the Triple-A squad taking the field every day, we're still somehow finding ways to win. Can this be sustained? Will the reinforcements be coming any time soon? Probably not, but if different guys step up we can at least weather the storm. The guys talk about the injury list, the unlikely heroes and pray for some luck. It's not easy to always be positive, but when you are taking 3 out of 4 in the Rockies series and still sitting in first place to close out the month it's hard not to be. We've got the division rival Braves coming to town for Memorial Day Weekend, but what we've also got coming is some rain. Pray for rain- that's the plan for the time being. If we can skip some spot starts and play 7 innings we'll be sitting pretty. Is it always going to work? Absolutely not, but with the bullpen buzzing, the starters doing their thing and a few random no-names putting balls in play when it counts, stranger things have happened. We don't choose to believe because it's easy, we believe because we gotta believe.

    WGB #92: ReplaceMets May 21, 2021
    Show notes

At the end of the day we're all just rooting for laundry and there's no better example than these replaceMets. The team has been ravaged by injury with 14 players heading to the IL, yet despite the tough times, the Mets march on. Under past ownership who knows where we would have wound up, but the Bench Mob rolls deep and we roll on! The guys talk about the tough series in Tampa that should have netted us at least one win but, even though it was a sweep, there wasn't any gut wrenching losses. Sometimes you just get beat and that's baseball Suzyn, you can't win them all. What's encouraging though is the way the squad came together for the Braves. It would have been easy for them to take the sweep and head into a tailspin, but these aren't the Mets you grew up on. If you would have told us that we'd have back-to-back bullpen games and win BOTH with THAT lineup, we wouldn't have ever believed it, but this team believes in themselves and that's all that matters. Look no further than the Villar-Pillar duo and Tomas Nido to see that there's something special going on around here. Pillar literally had his face broken and was back in the clubhouse and dugout the next night cheering on his guys. Teams that close always go places. KFC and Clem break down the good juju, how everyone on the team (minus Joey Luchessi) is a fan favorite and the calvary coming in June. We always "said" we believed, but that hasn't always been the case. Mets fans are pessimistic by nature, it's just the way we're wired, but things are a changing and Kevin has even had himself an epiphany! If he can believe then you can believe and if you can believe then we can believe cause this team is in first and better days are ahead so we gotta believe!
