Quarantine is over. (Kinda.) But now the world is on fire for a totally different reason— the protests opposing police brutality against Black Americans, and the murder of George Floyd. And that’s the only thing worth talking about at the moment. So that’s what Matt talks about— he covers the righteousness and simplicity of the underlying principle of the protests, the unbelievable degree to which Donald Trump is a massive pussy and his hypocritical response to the actions of the protestors, the asshole opportunists trying to fuck up the protests and turn them into their own shittier cause— and the stark difference between how white people say they feel around cops versus how black people say they feel around cops. Somehow a story about Matt tripping and falling on his first day of basketball practice sneaks in there too. But that is just a minor detail. (ALSO: IF YOU’RE PROTESTING, WEAR A MASK!!!)

Sunday Service #11: Special ‘End Of World’ Edition May 31, 2020

The world is breaking and the country is burning, so Matt couldn’t bring himself to do a normal Sunday Service. Instead, he focuses on a religion other than Christianity, though one that is just as confusing and indirectly destructive— American Exceptionalism. But the main focus of today’s episode is the only thing worth talking about at this particularly fucked up moment in time: the deeply disturbing murder of George Floyd, the astonishing straightforwardness of its brutality, the illuminating and differing responses to it from the media and the public, the ensuing nationwide protests, the unfortunate but unavoidable looting and destruction it has led to, why and how there is only one ‘side’ to be on amid all this chaos— and ultimately why it’s so hard for some white people to come to terms with the fact that racism is still so pervasive in our country. Matt also makes time to shit all over Donald Trump’s terrible but predictable response to all of this. And finally, Matt tells some personal anecdotes about the LA protests— which have literally been happening directly outside his front door. Stay safe, everybody.

From there he gets into much more, including but not limited to: why Bill Gates gets all the conspiracy theories for himself while Jeff Bezos gets nothing (even though Bezos looks and behaves much more like a supervillain), the hypocrisy of all those people who refuse to believe the mainstream media but lap up any and every random video or Facebook post their friends or moms send them, the sad way that Trump’s followers thoughtlessly and immediately pick up their dear leader’s talking points, the depressingly elastic nature of the term ‘Fake News’ (and why it will never go away), the absurdly vacant conspiracy theory called ‘Obamagate’, and the new religion sweeping across America— QAnon. He also plays some amazing church music. Why? It’s Sunday. And what’s Sunday? The day of the lord. AMEN.
