28: Big Things Have Small Beginnings by Wes Berry Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Decide today to succeed in business and in life - it's easy when you know how.

Wes Berry propelled his family's small Detroit-based florist shop into a remarkable international business with over $750 million in sales. Now, in his extraordinary new book, he shares what he has learned over the years about leadership and business growth. In many businesses that fail, the small things are overlooked; they are the things that are often the easiest to implement, but at the same time they are easy to forget. It's these small things that have the greatest impact in the long-term.

Neglecting small things can be the difference between failure and success.

27: Before The Exit by Dan Andrews Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

In the entrepreneurial world, it’s rarely questioned that “exiting” is the end goal of a smartly built business and a prestigious waypoint in a successful career. Since building and selling a business can take years - or even decades - you can’t exactly “practice” exiting your business. The best you can do is learn from others. In 2015, Dan Andrews and Ian Schoen sold their product business, which they built over the course of 7 years and employed 15 people, for multi-seven figures. While they don't regret selling the business – there are many mistakes they made that were avoidable.

Whether you are still in the early stages of building a business or thinking of selling, this book is designed to help you build with the future in mind.

25: Billion Dollar Brand Club by Lawrence Ingrassia Feb 10, 2020

Dollar Shave Club and its hilarious marketing. Casper mattresses popping out of a box. Third Love’s lingerie designed specifically for each woman’s body. Warby Parker mailing you five pairs of glasses to choose from. You’ve seen their ads. You (or someone you know) use their products. Each may appear, in isolation, as a rare David with the bravado to confront a Goliath, but taken together they represent a seismic shift in a business model that has lasted more than a century.

    24: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl Feb 03, 2020
    Show notes

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

Robert’s poor dad struggled financially all his life, and these two dads—these very different points of view of money, investing, and employment—shaped Robert’s thinking about money.
