Crystal Confab Podcast Introduction: Are you just starting with crystals? Or maybe you have a whole collection but aren't sure how to use them? Join 4 crystal nerds, healers, workers, and lovers for crystal confab, a casual chat about all things crystals. Ashley Leavy: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the crystal confab podcast. We are really excited to share a lot with you today. We're gonna talk about some magic related to the crystal dioptase, which I personally really love. It's one of my favorites. I am Ashley Leavy and I'm here with my fellow co hosts, the amazing Adam Berlick, Kyle Perez, and Nicholas Pearson. So hey, everybody. How are you doing? Adam Barralet: Really good. Exciting to talk about a bit of a rarer crystal today. Ashley: Yeah. I know. We have so much crystal wisdom in store to share in today's episode. So why don't we go ahead and dive right in? I believe Nicholas had something to share to kick us off. Nicholas Pearson: Yeah. So it's not a secret that I really love copper minerals for folks who listen to be nerd out about rocks. They were like one of the first moments that I had in my journey of, like, learning about the geology and how the energy kinda synced up with it. It would be like I'd find a weird, unusual thing I'd never heard of before in my museum days, like cyanotrichite or something similarly odd, that I had difficulty sounding out and pronouncing, let alone remembering how to spell. And I'd sit and meditate and, you know, come up with my own personal experience and then go look it up and go, wow. This also has copper in it, and that's why it has this property that reminds me of this other thing and that other thing. So it was like one of those big light bulb moments. So I've always loved, like, the whole copper family. And, Dioptase, I find, like, really exceptionally sweet. There's a tenderness to it. Copper minerals are so connective and synergistic on their own, but there's something about it being like a copper silicate that makes it so much more expansive and radiant and luminous. And, some years ago when I was doing some, like, extra research on on copper minerals for, in bookstones on the Goddess, I found, like, these little threads that all fit together that kind of connect them to the divine feminine. You know, we've got the the word copper itself comes to us because of the island of Cyprus, which is cupros in Greek, which became cuprum in Latin, eventually copper in in English after making a few more stops along the way. And among among other great mythic things about Cyprus, it was a really historically important source for copper minerals and copper ore in the ancient world. It's also said to be more or less the birthplace of, the goddess Aphrodite or Venus. So, you know, when she first set foot on solid land after being born from the foam of the waves, it was in the island of Cyprus there in the Mediterranean. And so that place is, like, impregnated with her coppery-ness, if you will, in its local geology. But there's this really kind of fun thread that connects a lot of copper minerals to the divine feminine. In some Slavic lore, you occasionally find references to, like, either a copper mountain or a malachite mountain that's kind of the same as Mount Venus, which we find farther to the west in the European, like, witch lore that talks about this meeting place for magic, a connection to the witch mother, the witch queen, the queen of magic and mystery, the queen of heaven, and appropriately enough, and some of this territory, which is famous for its malachite mines, we also find really good evidence of some very fine, albeit rare, dioptase that can occur in similar regions. So in my own kind of reflections and connection to dioptase, I find this like, expansive, like, exalting quality that it brings to the heart, and it's through that energy of love that we experience the divine feminine. It's surrender to love in its highest, most cosmic kind of sense, and that kind of love isn't just like a, you know, whimsical feeling, it's not a just limited to romance, it's not an emotion, it's a force of nature, and it's it's the kind of force of nature that mends the things that are broken. It's the quality that helps us have new beginnings and that's so appropriate for a stone that in the modern crystal world we see associated with like forgiveness, emotional balance. My other favorite little bit about copper minerals, that also connects to the divine feminine is, a little bit of a, we'll say, off color, alchemical joke because alchemists apparently had senses of humor in the medieval and early modern period. And, you know, they'd write in the scholarly language, which of course was Latin for the most part. And you find references to the meretrix medalorum or the harlot of metals, referring to the metal of Venus, the metal copper. And the idea here is that compared to other metals that only make certain kinds of ionic bonds or readily produce sulfates and salts and and and other chemicals, under very specific conditions. Lady Copper is easy and rejects no levers. She'll bind to oxides and sulfur salts, and she makes all colors of the rainbow in her children as she blends with these other things. And I think that's really part of the magic of the goddess. Right? It's being able to be in the moment and open yourself to receive this magic. You'll never get this chance again. There'll be more. You'll make different magic. And it's kind of how I think of the whimsy of so many copper minerals that are so brightly colored. We've got the emerald green of dioptase, the neon blue of, Shattuckite, and just so many other colors. So, yeah, for me, it's definitely a stone of finding those qualities of the divine feminine. Adam: Nicholas, lots of people, you know, like us, we love to get into the geology of the crystals and what forms them, but a lot of people were just buying their crystals because they like the colors or they like the properties and that type of thing. I get you. You mentioned, you know, malachite and Shattuckite briefly there. Can you give a few more examples of those copper based crystals? And, you know, maybe even if you could explain a little bit for people about why the crystals are normally green and blue, but copper's kind of an orange color. Nicholas: Yeah. So, this is super fun. Copper minerals come in Speaker 0: a really wide array of colors, and Nicholas: it depends on, like, what they're connected to. So other common copper rich things that we might have in our crystal toolkit could include things like turquoise and chrysocolla, maybe some cuprite. You can have malachite and azurite. You can have, as I mentioned, Shattuckite. There are things like chalcocite, some copper sulfides, like Covellite and chalcopyrite, and a few others that escape me at the moment. And so, we find metallics in reds and golds and blacks and silvers. We find really richly saturated blues and greens. We occasionally find brilliant oranges and yellows, and it really depends on the kind of partner that copper has in the making of that. A lot of copper mineral deposits that we find are in these, like, oxidation zones. So we get we get some sort of superheated liquid in the earth, usually magma, but it it could also be byproducts of that that won't yield our primary copper deposits, but because copper is welcoming of all lovers, she's especially fond of water and the things it carries, and so that copper gets leached out as water percolates through and then oxidizes higher and higher up. So we get a lot of these minerals like chrysocolla and turquoise and, azurite and malachite in these secondary and and even later stages of oxidation where the primary copper, that kind of raw metallic form is is eaten away and dissolved and and recombined. And every time it does so, it changes just a little bit, and some of these copper minerals are very closely related. If we look at something like azurite and malachite, they're off by one tiny little ion, and one of them, malachite, is far more stable in more environments than its counterpart, which is azurite. So even just that one little bit of ionic charge that changes when we remove one thing, can give us a really big shift in color and luster and texture. And so we see these copper minerals kinda like blending into one another, forming these, like, really complex sedimentary rocks that have such brilliant shades and colors and contrasting patterns. They're just…they're so magical. Ashley: Okay. I wanna say thank you for explaining that because, Adam, that was a really good question, 1st and foremost. Like, you know, how do we go from this, like, beautiful metallic orange to these gorgeous blues and greens? And, Nicholas, I've never heard anyone explain a very complicated process quite as simply as that. That made it really easy to understand. And I don't want to take away from, you know, the importance of the scientific part that you just talked about. And I also don't want to take away from the beauty that you described between, you know, Lady Copper and her many suitors and lovers and creating all these beautiful minerals. But there was something that you said very early on when you started your discussion about dioptase that I want to point back to because you, just like, slipped it right in there, but it made me think of how important it is. And that is, you know,

Join Adam Barralet, Ashley Leavy, Kyle Perez, and Nicholas Pearson in Episode #3 of the Crystal Confab Podcast as they explore Angel Aura Quartz meaning and uses, including: Raising energy with Aura Quartz Historic notes about aura-like glazes Coatings for Quartz in ancient Nubia Working with Angel Aura Quartz for the Full Moon in Aries Tune in now and dive into the magical world of Angel Aura Quartz! Podcast Episode Transcript: Crystal Confab Podcast Introduction: Are you just starting with crystals? Or maybe you have a whole collection but aren't sure how to use them? Join 4 crystal nerds, healers, workers, and lovers for crystal confab, a casual chat about all things crystals. Adam Barralet: When it comes to man made crystals, for me, they just don't feel right. Things like gold stone, that glassy opalite, and dyeing different things like agates and halites. However, there is one family of crystals that I will make an exception to because the power and potentiality of these crystal is absolutely amazing. These are the aura quartzes. And today, we're gonna dive into one of my favorites. It's known as angel aura quartz. So welcome to crystal confab where we dive in and have a bit of a special informal chat about one of the crystals we love and we hope you love too. Joining me today, of course, is Kyle and Nicholas. How are you today, gents? Doing well. Kyle Perez: Doing well. Thank you. Adam: Beautiful. Now I wanna start off by kind of really clarifying, you know, I've got my favorite angel aura quartz. It's actually a Lemurian seed angel aura quartz here. But, Nicholas, I remember seeing on your Instagram, I don't know how long ago it was now, you did this amazing explanation because when I first started collecting crystals, there was only one type of aura quartz. And, obviously, the different metals that you fuse together, you get all the different colors of the rainbow. But as time's gone on, I've noticed there's different other kind of ones. And many times even buying online, I've got disappointed with what's actually wrapped up. It's not what I believe to be a true aura quartz. But can you run us through what the aura quartz is that? Nicholas Pearson: Yeah. Absolutely. So in the late nineties, there was a scientist in the Pacific Northwest here in the United States who came up with this process of applying a really thin, like, microns thick, layer of precious metals to the outside of quartz, and later they did it to some other materials as well. And, the first experiments were done with gold, which produced that, you know, beautiful kind of aquamarine blue color, and they were kind of iridescent. And so they nicknamed that aqua aura. And over time, they, you know, tried some other things out with different metals, and that produced things like our rainbow aura, titanium aura, the angel aura that we'll be discussing tonight. And it was a pretty closely guarded secret. The way of applying that metal to the outside, is a process that goes by 2 different names. It's called precious metal anodization, where they're, you know, vaporized. It's also called vapor deposition, and you have to superheat the quartz in a vacuum chamber under intense pressure, to allow those metals to become a gas, like the air we breathe. And the quartz in that environment also generates a tiny electrical charge, thanks to its piezo electricity. And that that kind of calls, if you will, the metals to it to make that permanent layer on the surface. And it's a very, very thin layer, but it is permanent, unless you're gonna, you know, take it to a, you know, bit of lapidary equipment, you're not gonna sand it off. And that was pretty much it. And while I imagine there are some other folks who figured out how to do this in some other parts of the world, in the, you know, last I mean, certainly in the last 10 years, but in more recent years, we've seen kind of this explosion of aura like materials being sold. The kind of second generation of them are done through a process called electroplating, where you put whatever it is you want to electroplate in a solution that has salts of usually some kind of metal. It's almost always titanium with these guys. And you run an electrical charge to that. You have 2 little diodes, a diode and anode, and it, you know, runs this current through the solution, which breaks apart the components of the salts. Some of them become neutral, and some of them migrate. In the case of the metal, the metallic bases migrate to the surface of the quartz. And you get wildly different kind of degrees of quality in these. Sometimes you get a really nice even coating, they had to turn the stones partway through to do that. Other times you can see, like, the metal grating imprints on the bottom where they didn't turn them. Sometimes there will be bald spots in them. If it's a thick enough coating, it's pretty permanent. If it's not, it can rub off. And this is far less costly than making the kind of precious metal analogs using the vapor deposition process. So you can make a lot more material for a lot less expensive, but no matter what color it is, it's almost always done with titanium. So the so called called aqua aura Quartzes that's made with the 2nd generation process still colored by titanium and not gold. Same with our angel aura not coming from things like platinum. It's always almost always going to be titanium. And then, a few years after that, we see an entirely different substance on the market being called aqua aura quartz, or aura quartz kind of broadly speaking, and it doesn't use metals at all. The crystals, get dyed first to produce the kind of undercoat of color, and then they're sprayed with synthetic things like Teflon and other polymers to produce the iridescence on the outside. Sometimes these scrape off really easily. Sometimes when you pull the price tag off of them, the color comes with it. So, you know, these can have any number of chemicals applied to them. We don't necessarily know because not every treatment facility is doing the same thing. As they're spraying them, there's lots of runoff, so it can't be good for the workers involved. It's gotta, you know, have some environmental implications as well. So, you know, it's not truly aura quartz anymore at that point, I think. Adam: It would just really be quartz with some stuff sprayed on it, really, and artificial stuff. And that's similar to what I was talking about before about injecting dye into agates and things like that. Wouldn't it? Nicholas: Absolutely. And, you know, at the end of the day, people can collect whatever they wanna collect, whatever they're called to, whatever they find beautiful. Beauty itself is therapeutic. But if, you know, we're coming at it from the, you know, traditionally, but still modern, practice of, crystal healing. I just don't see how something that's coated in resin or plastic or some other polymer is gonna hold up. Those are insulative kinds of materials, and I just feel like it's going to prevent the quartz from doing all the things we hope quartz is gonna do in our life. Adam: Now I know Ashley did this amazing experiment where she actually got, the clear quartz and the metals that were made to make these different, aura quartz of all the different colors, and we'd check the energy freak, the energy field of them. And then she'd compare that to the, to the actual aura quartz. And she found each time that the aura quartz almost doubled in its energy field. So this first type is I love them for amplifying just their own properties. We, you know, we often forget that metals themselves are crystals. They're just a crystal made of a single element, so they have their own potentiality. And we know that clear quartz amplifies all other quart all other crystals. So I love this first type. Nicholas, how do you feel about the second type? Nicholas: You know, I think as long as we're okay with titanium being the element involved, we're not over romanticizing something as containing an element on the periodic table it doesn't have, I don't see why we can't appreciate it. The coatings are quite a bit thicker than they're going to be on the 1st generation material. And they're often quite a bit more uneven. So, you know, we might need to bear in mind that they require a little extra care, and, you know, any number of other things can be introduced to them to also produce some of those colors. So it's not going to be a single pure element from the periodic table. It's not just gold or just platinum or just titanium. It's gonna be a range of other stuff to produce that iridescence. And, you know, at the end of the day, there's still runoff from those, you know, chemical salt baths they have to go in, and, you know, we have to contemplate, like, how how well is that being disposed of, and, you know, how much care is given to the folks who have to deal with those caustic solutions. Adam: I don't know if you've got any insider information that you can share with us, but the type 1, does seem to be a bit of a protected, you know, like you said, process. And it does seem to be that finding that type 1 aura quartz is getting really, really challenging and difficult. Do you know what's happening in that realm? Nicholas: So far as I know, the guy who mentioned the process is still making it. I'm not entirely clear whether other folks have cracked the code. I've heard rumors, but, and because a lot of this stuff happens so far up the supply chain that if you're even just a couple rungs removed at, you know, giant trade shows, It's all a kind of oral tradition, if you will. You know, it's all hearsay. It's all anecdotal stuff. So it's hard to verify those things that we hear, at those kinds of events. So I've heard, that the process has been copied in China,

Kyle Perez: Hello, and welcome to crystal confab, where we confab about crystals. I'm Kyle, the crystalline mage, and I have with us Adam Barralet, Nicholas Pearson, and Ashley Levy. And we are going to dive into amethyst, which I think we can all agree is an essential crystal and mineral for anyone working in and around crystals and minerals. I have, been blessed with, working with amethyst since I was a little kid when I was gifted my first piece from my grandmother. I think that's probably a story that's quite similar for everyone, whether it's walking into a crystal shop, whether it's being gifted a piece, whether it's finding a piece. I think Amethyst is often our first, and I'm excited to dive in with all of you about what Amethyst is amazing for in different ways. Maybe you haven't thought about it before, and maybe it will confirm the way you do work with amethyst. Adam Barralet: I love what you're saying, Kyle, about it being your first crystal because it was my first crystal as well. When I walked into a crystal shop, that's what I bought. And then I got a little sheet of paper that told you what to do with each crystal, and then that kind of spiraled out of this top mess than it is today. But, actually, Nicholas, was do you remember your first crystal? Nicholas Pearson: Yeah. I know mine really intimately. It's a piece of quartz that my grandfather gave me. I was you know, like a lot of us, I picked up rocks everywhere I went as a kid. I've never outgrown that, by the way, as Ashley can attest. And, my my grandmother collected, like, vintage turquoise jewelry. So, like, I just had this fascination with rock and gem, and my grandfather gave me a piece of quartz from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and that in no uncertain terms, it changed my life 30 plus years ago. Ashley Leavy: I have a similar story, of course, but my first crystal was fluorite. My grandfather was a huge mineral collector, and he specifically collected fluorite from Cave in Rock, Illinois in Southern Illinois, here in the Midwest in the US. And that fluorite in particular is so beautiful, displays this amazing cubic habit, fantastic color zoning, and he was so into it. And I can remember sitting in his office for hours while he would tell me about all these crystals. And when I was 8, I actually went to he had, like, a little cabin property in Southern Illinois, and I went down to visit for spring break over school. And he took me to Cave and Rock. And although I'm pretty sure that mine had recently closed at that time, and that would have been back in the, like, early to mid-nineties because mold. We went and looked through the, like, dump pile of rocks that they had pulled out, and we actually found some fluorite. And I still have that piece of fluorite today, and it is my favorite stone. It's pretty rough and ready. It's not like a gorgeous piece, but it's so so special. Adam: I love that. I love that. Now today we're talking about amethyst, obviously. And I love people who are watching or listening to let us know in the comments what your first crystal was. But obviously, amethyst is found in many locations around the world, and that's gonna impact identity, I'm guessing. Do you reckon, Ashley? Ashley: Yeah. I wanted to ask everyone what they sort of thought about this. So I'd love to share a little bit of what I think and then sort of ping pong and see what we what we all sort of experience with this. Because I feel like amethyst is one of those stones. It's pretty common. Right? We find it in lots and lots of locations across the globe. So most of us have at least a few pieces in our collection. And this is where sort of knowing the origin or locality of that stone gets really interesting. Because in my experience, I feel like all amethyst crystals share a set of qualities or properties. Right? And they're all gonna have a certain type of energy. Maybe you feel like they enhance your meditation. They help you connect more deeper with your spirituality. Maybe they help you really focus while you're doing divination work. There's sort of this set, structure that we think of when it comes to amethyst. These set qualities are properties that most people can relate to, and these are pretty common. Some come from historical sources. Some are a little bit more modern, but many people have similar experiences and couldn't sort of agree on this. But where I think it gets really interesting is where we start to look at specific localities of amethyst, like Veracruz amethyst, Brandberg amethyst. And we start to see these subtle differences, and sometimes not so subtle even, in their properties, in their energetic qualities. And we kind of open the door to a whole new world. And I wanted to share a little bit about one of my favorite amethyst, and that's Thunder Bay amethyst. I love Thunder Bay amethyst from Ontario and Canada. It has these beautiful red iron-rich caps or terminations. And there's something so stunning about that. To me, like, just the visual stimulation of the bright red and the vibrant, you know, purply violet coming together. But also, there's this really inner interesting energetic quality where you have that really grounding iron combined with this stone that's really usually connected with more spiritual type work. So you get this interesting juxtaposition and energy. And a few years ago, I think it was maybe 2018 or 2019, I went up to Thunder Bay and did some mining for the Thunder Bay amethyst. There are a few different places where you can go and sort of dig for the crystals. It was such an awesome experience other than the midges that are all over and sort of tend to bite you when you go up there in the summer months. But it was a great experience of seeing where these crystals come from, getting to understand a little bit more about their formation, getting your hands in that soft earth, that clay that they sort of are birthed from. And there is nothing like sort of, you know, getting your hands in the soil and just, like, gently digging through and seeing what you can find and seeing those little terminations sort of peak up through. It was absolutely exhilarating and something that I'll never forget. But I love that specific energy of the Thunder Bay amethyst. I feel like it has that grounding iron, which brings a lot of these lofty spiritual ideas, this tendency toward connecting with spirit, connecting with the divine, and bringing it down into the everyday where we can make our connection really practical, really grounded in ritual and things that, we can experience. And then when you get to some of these other stones, like Brandberg, amethyst is one. I saw a lot of my, cohosts nodding like, oh, yeah. That's a good one. And, even some of the amethyst from India. Nicholas, you gifted me a beautiful piece from Ireland last year that has, like, been a game-changer for for what I thought amethyst could be. So I think it's really fascinating when we start to look at these different localities and look at those subtle differences in the geologic process, how things were sort of formed, what happened, the trace mineral inclusions that they have inside of them, like, what else is happening in there? And also their their crystal habit, and some of the things that make each one unique. Think about a vera cruz amethyst, that really pale soft lilac tends to have a little bit of a softer, gentler energy, and then something that I think is really energizing like a chevron amethyst from Namibia or something like that. So I would love to sort of see, like, does anyone have an amethyst that's your favorite from a specific location? And, you know, would you like to share a little bit about it? Nicholas: I've I've got, like, a long list of favorite locales. I'm, you know, such a geology nerd that I love, you know, as we talked about last week, I love solving the mystery and figuring things out. But, yeah, I think, the amethyst that are nearest and dearest to my heart are my very small collection of Japanese amethysts. I've got them from a few different prefectures in Japan. The Japanese mineral market is, like, it's a roller coaster trying to get things that are Japanese outside of Japan because there's such great population density and so little land being mined for high-end minerals that, there are a lot of high-end collectors there that very little of it leaves those, borders. So my very first, like, proper Japanese mineral was an amethyst, from an undisclosed location. I still have never quite found something that matches it exactly, but, a lot of the amethyst that I have collected from Japan have this really tender, sweet quality to them. There are a few locations famous for, amethyst forming these little vesicles, like little pockets of gas in basalt or similar rock and so they form very teeny tiny crystals, some of which look like lotuses and, they're just they just have this kind of sweet blossoming quality to them. I'm also really fond of amethyst well, rocks in general that have, like, weird origin stories. And last year, I fell in love with this amethyst from Cabarrus County, North Carolina here in the US,

Adam: Amazing. Amazing. And, of course, also joining us from the States, we've got Nicholas. How are you, Nicholas? Nicholas Pearson: Great. So, thanks so much for, you know, getting us all to collaborate, getting us in one space. I'm really excited for this. So for those who may not know my work already, my name is Nicholas Pearson. I am currently writing my 10th and 11th books simultaneously. The majority of which have been about crystals. You may already know some of the more popular ones like Crystal Basics or Stones of the Goddess or Crystal Healing for the Heart. And I have been a mineral collector for more than 30 years now. Initially, I went to university and actually majored in earth and environmental science and worked in the earth science field for a bit before leaving to do other things. And, I have been writing for about 10 years now, and, I'm really excited for some of those projects that are coming up on the horizon. I'm joining from, Orlando, Florida, so I'm I'm here in the the central part of the Sunshine State, although it is nighttime and not very sunny. And, I'm just so excited to get together with some like-minded folks. Adam: And, of course, I needed some southern hemisphere backup, so I called on a good friend, Kyle. Kyle, thanks for joining us and being part of the team. Kyle: It is absolutely my pleasure. I am so excited to be a part of this and to just chat crystals with people that love them and have been a part of it for a long time. So I'll go into myself. I'm Kyle Perez. I go by the crystalline mage. I've been working in the industry for over a decade. I'm a qualified gemologist, psychic, and crystal intuitive. I do a lot of reading work, and I'm lucky to work in wholesale as well. So I get to work in kind of the B2B between, where they get sourced and then where they get sold to. So I deal with a lot of businesses. I have worked in crystal shops and wholesale for a long time as well, and I am a big nerd when it comes to crystal stuff. I love to blend the science and the spirituality and bring that understanding to whoever I'm talking to when it comes to crystals. Adam: Amazing. And I also am in Perth, Western Australia with Kyle. So we are in the most isolated city in the entire world, but a very beautiful world as well. So I can look out my window and see kangaroos. I've always lived in the bush and in nature. So crystals were a big thing for me since I walked in and bought my first crystal, which was an amethyst about 30 years ago. And then I gave you a little sheet that told you what all the crystals did. I went back and bought another crystal and another crystal and to the point now where, you know, I would hate to try and count my crystal collection. So about 10 years ago, I was invited to write my first book, Crystal Connections. I also created a series of meditations, guided meditations for crystals that are now on Itunes and work with crystals as well as other nature's gifts like essential oils, animal wisdom, and throw a bit of tarot and astrology in there as well. So, Kyle, I've got a bit of a question you start up with. We were kind of toying up when we were meeting before we got together and went, what do we call this? And you came up with the title of crystal confab. And I must admit, I don't know about the others, but I haven't heard of a confab before, so you're gonna have to explain it to me and anyone else is wondering what on earth it is. Kyle: It's really, really simple. It's just an informal private discussion, and it felt like this is going to be just that, us chatting fairly informally, and we get to share that with people. And it felt, excuse me, it felt like a nice, simple, easy name to work with too. Adam: I love it. I love it. And we decided for our first episode to dive into Black Onyx. Now, Nick, you Nicholas, sorry. You were talking to us earlier, and you were explaining a little bit about the history of onyx. It hasn't always been recognized as the same stone, has it? Nicholas: No. It's it's kind of a a fun situation here because, our modern-day word onyx comes to us from from Greek, which meant, a fingernail. And it originally referred to usually, like, banded agates that have parallel perfectly parallel lines. Today, we call those things like spirit level agates and water level agates, and a handful of other names. But because we have these little parallel ridges in our fingernails, that's where that term was derived from. And it was favored especially for things like carving cameos and intaglios, which might be used as seals, but also for a category of objects known as magical gemstones, which sounds like it could be any rock used for magic, but actually there are some pretty specific cultural and anthropological parameters on that term. But over time, what we have known as onyx has changed. So, good quality banded onyx that had really stark black bands was great for carving your cameos and intaglios because it created the greatest contrast, in the colors when you cut away those different layers. But before the advent of modern geology and modern mineral science and, you know, all the offshoots, we didn't always define things based on their chemical composition and often where they came from or what they looked like was more important than anything else. So today, we've seen a gradual transition away from any banded agate that has perfectly parallel bands, no wavy lines, no concentric circles, none of that, to mostly opaque stones. And they can or cannot have bands, which kind of loses the meaning of the word onyx altogether. And it would be in, the Victorian period when the preference for all black onyx would, you know, basically rise to the 4 because of her period of mourning after the death of Prince Albert and she popularized jet jewelry. But others also found other gems that were acceptable in that era, that being one of them. But especially in the last few decades, we've seen a resurgence of things that we might call cultural onyxes rather than gemological ones, which are other rocks that have lots of nice parallel bands in them. And they're usually things like travertine, and other sedimentary calcareous rocks, things that are full of calcite and dolomite, which we call things like Pakistani onyx or Mexican onyx are often, you know, given those kind of monikers of where they come from to differentiate them from our true gemological onyx, which is, of course, silica is quartz. Ashley: Okay. I want if it's okay. Because, Nicholas, I love hearing about this sort of evolution of the name and how it has really changed throughout the ages and what used to be known as onyx and what's now known as onyx and what's kind of continuing to be known as onyx. Is this and because I don't know, and maybe, you know, maybe anyone knows. Is this, an an instance of almost like colloquialism where people are just, like, grabbing on to this term? Because it almost reminds me of, like this is the analogy I think of a lot, like a daisy. A daisy can mean a different thing to a lot of different people depending on where you live and what's around in your landscape. Is that kind of what we're seeing here? Nicholas: Yeah. It it's definitely a case of that. You know? And I'm sure that Kyle's gonna touch on this a little bit more when we go into, like, our modern association with onyx and its its composition instruction things. But, the word onyx is not a geological term. It is one that has cultural value, has aesthetic value, has gemological value.

My Favorite Crystal Cards | 6 Best Crystal Card Decks for Your Daily Card Pull Sep 26, 2024
    Show notes

Working with crystal cards is an amazing way to tap into your intuition and get a little support and encouragement from the universe. Read on to discover the best crystal card decks for your daily card pull! Why Work with Crystal Cards? I personally like to pull a card or two to start my day. Then I’ll place the cards somewhere I’ll see them often throughout my day as a reminder of the messages they’ve given me. I like to add the cards I pulled to my altar and reflect on their meanings for some extra insight and clarity. The great thing about working with Crystal Cards, is that there’s no right or wrong way to go about it; it’s all about tuning into your intuition and doing what feels right. Crystal-themed Cards are my favorite because each card is associated with a particular stone. After pulling my cards and reflecting on their meaning, I can connect with the stone in meditation, while journaling, or even carry it with me throughout the day for some added support. It's an excellent way to anchor the card's message into my practice and helps me feel more connected with the energy I want to be mindful of that day. Tarot Cards vs. Oracle Cards: Tarot cards follow suits in the minor arcana and have strong archetypes associated with their major arcana cards, but Oracle cards don’t follow these traditional associations. Instead, they leave a lot of room for your own interpretation based on their symbolism and imagery. 6 Best Crystal Cards: There are TONS of amazing Crystal Card Decks available (including a few of my own!) and I often get asked which are my favorites to work with. I've pulled together my 6 favorite crystal card decks (in alphabetical order) that I'd recommend based on their substance and imagery - these decks have the perfect balance of beautiful aesthetics and great information that makes them perfect for a simple daily card pull, or a more extensive card spread. #1: Crystal Energy Affirmation Cards by Ashley Leavy The Crystal Energy Affirmations Card Deck contains 52 crystal-themed cards. Each card features a photograph of the crystal and and associated affirmation. Draw a card, speak the affirmation aloud (or silently to yourself), and work with that crystal during the day to call in that energy and create positive changes in your life. This simple system is an excellent way to get to know your stones and is a quick and easy daily ritual for working with your crystals! #2: Crystal Moon Mystic Oracle by Ashley Leavy The Crystal Moon Mystic Oracle deck is a set of 76 cards offering guidance from the moon. The lunar phases, the zodiac, and the 13 full moons of the year all come together in this deck to inspire and provide insight into your spiritual path. Plus, you'll learn about the healing crystals that connect to each of these moon energies and how you can incorporate them into your spiritual practice or healing work. A perfect accompanying deck for my book, Cosmic Crystals: Rituals and Meditations for Connecting with Lunar Energy. #3: Crystal Healing Card Deck by Uma Silbey This is a fantastic deck for beginners and experienced card-readers and crystal workers alike. It has simple and straightforward information on each card including a keyword for the main energy of the stone and a few sentences about its physical and emotional qualities. There's also a short affirmation included on each card and the images are photographic examples of each stone. A great deck overall for card reading or to use like flashcards for learning more about your crystals! #4: The Crystal Wisdom Healing Oracle by Judy Hall These cards are incredibly simple, but it's the guidebook that really shines! The cards feature only a photograph of the stone and its name in text, but Judy Hall's descriptive interpretations for each card in the included guidebook not only summarize the energy of each stone well, but I've always found them to deliver exactly the message I needed to hear. #5: The Illustrated Crystallary Cards by Maia Toll Maia Toll's books and card decks have been incredibly popular over the last few years - and with good reason! These cards are beautifully illustrated, combining beautiful renditions of each stone along with additional symbolism (like companion plants, animals, or symbols representing the thematic energy of the card). This deck will certainly have you thinking about your stones in from a new perspective. Each card depicts the gorgeous image, along with the name of the stone and some text at the top of the card with keyword or theme. The included guidebook gives some additional insight into each card. #6: The Telluric Tarot by Lunaria Gold The artwork on these cards is my absolute favorite and I love that each crystal card is paired with a companion plant (a flower or herb that shares similar energetic qualities with the stone). There's a very helpful guidebook included with the deck. The only issue is that I believe this deck is currently out of print and I was unable to find a place to purchase it as the author/artist has closed their Etsy shop. *Disclosure: The links here may be affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase. Yay! With so many beautiful and insightful crystal cards available, you're sure to find a deck (or several!) that resonates with your journey, enhancing your daily rituals and helping you tap into the magic of the universe. Rainbow Fluorite: Rainbow Fluorite promotes clear thinking and allows you to see what’s most important in a given situation. If you’ve been feeling scattered or pulled in lots of different directions, work with this crystal to get you back on track. It can also bring clarity to your role in projects, relationships, or social groups and help you better understand what people expect from you. Ritual Supplies: A notebook or some paper A small to medium-sized bowl Some colored pencils Scissors Three Tumbled Rainbow Fluorite stones Gather your supplies. Trace the outline of the bowl on the paper to create a circle. Cut out the circle and draw lines dividing it into eight equal sections. Use your colored pencils to shade each section a different color. Label the sections with one of the following archetypes: Artist, Dreamer, Fool, Healer, Leader, Scholar, Servant, and Warrior. Cast (gently drop) the three stones onto the circle. Make note of the archetypes on each area where a stone has landed. If a stone falls outside of the circle, disregard it. If a stone falls on the line between two areas, note both archetypes. Take a moment to contemplate what these archetypes mean and why others may see you in them. Consider whether or not these are roles that you’d like to fill in your life. Will you conform or rebel? How do you show up in each of these and why? Take some time to journal about this. A few days later, return to what you've written and reflect on your words. Crystals for Libra in Your Chart: In addition to working with crystals during Libra season, you may also want to work with the following stones if you have Libra energy in your birth chart. Each of us has many astrological influences that affect our energy and the way we interact with the world around us. The energies that have the biggest influence on you are your Sun Sign, Moon Sign, and Rising Sign. These are sometimes called “Your Big 3.” These can be determined by calculating of your natal chart using the full date, time, and place of your birth. The Big Three Your Sun Sign is the astrological sign that the Sun was in during the time of your birth (also known as your Zodiac sign). The Sun is the center of all life and represents your personality and spirit. Your Moon Sign is determined by the sign that the Moon was in during the time of your birth and influences your Soul expression. Your Moon Sign represents your emotions, moods, and your innermost-self. Your Rising Sign, also known as your Ascendant, is the planetary influence that was on the Eastern horizon when you were born. Your Rising Sign is the starting point of the first house in your birth chart and has a good deal of influence on the characteristics of your personality (sometimes even outweighing those of your Sun Sign because your Rising Sign is the part of yourself that you share with others). If Libra is part of your Big 3, you can use the stones suggested below to enhance or balance its energy. Sunstone can always be used in place of a Sun Sign Stone (or you can use any of the Cancer crystals listed at the beginning of this article), and Moonstone can be substituted in place of a Moon Sign Stone. Stone for Libra as Your Sun Sign: Pyrite or Hiddenite Stone for Libra as Your Moon Sign: Selenite or White Marble Stone for Libra as Your Rising Sign: Chrysoprase or Chrysanthemum Stone Working with Crystals for Your Big 3: To work with your 3 Astrological Crystals (Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs), you can craft a crystal energy pouch with corresponding crystals and symbols. Starting with your Sun Sign, write out the name of your sign and draw its symbol on a small scrap of paper (you may even want to draw the symbol of its ruling planet for a boost of energy). These symbols will charge up your crystal with the energy of your Sun sign. Place this paper along with your Sun Sign Stone into the pouch. As you place the stone and paper into the bag, think about what energy your Sun Sign represents and brings into your life. Next, write out the name of your Moon sign and draw its symbol on another small piece of paper. Place this paper along with your Moon Sign Stone into the pouch. As you place the stone and paper into the bag, think about what energy your Moon Sign represents and brings into your life. Finally, write out the name of your Rising sign and draw its symbol on the last small piece of paper. Place this paper along with your Rising Sign Stone into the pouch. As you place the stone and paper into the bag, think about what energy your Rising Sign represents and brings into your life. After adding all the stones to the pouch, focus your intention on strengthening your positive traits and balancing the negative aspects of your unique astrological blueprint. Explore the exciting energies of Libra season with these crystals, bringing balance, harmony, and partnership into your life! Why am I Drawn to Some Crystals More than Others? Sep 05, 2024
    Show notes

Ever felt mysteriously attracted to a certain crystal or stone and wondered 'Why am I drawn to some crystals more than others?' It’s HIGHLY likely that the crystal you're feeling pulled to represents an energy that you need in your life right now. There’s a wonderful quote by the Persian poet and scholar, Rumi, that says, “What you seek, is seeking you.” In my experience of working with people and crystals, I’ve observed this to be true time and time again. When there's something in your life that feels like it's missing or something that really needs your focus and attention, then often there's a special stone that draws you in...almost calling to you, to support you in this work. If you’re seeking to heal or balance some aspect of your life, a helpful crystal companion will often appear at just the right time - showing you the path to transformation and wholeness. These crystals often come into your life to help you create rapid shifts in your well-being. For example, for the first many years of my crystal journey, I just didn't seem to connect with Rose Quartz at all. It's not that I disliked the stone, it just didn't really capture my attention and I thought it was a little boring. But after my grandmother passed away and I was processing a lot of grief and deeply missing her, I found myself drawn to Rose Quartz like a magnet. There was something so soothing and supportive about its energy and I connected with it in a very deep and meaningful way. I didn't understand for a few weeks why it had suddenly captured my attention, but then I realized how much I was missing my grandma - her support, compassion, love, and care - and Rose Quartz came to my aid to help comfort and soothe me during a very difficult time. I often hear from people who have had these experiences and then later feel sad when their crystal “doesn’t feel how it used to” or they feel like they just "don’t connect with the stone the same way.” Does this sound familiar? Well, in my experience, that’s because once the stone has done its job and the energy is no longer needed by you in the same way it was before, your connection to the stone (that feeling of being called to or drawn in by its energy) feels different. It may even feel like the connection no longer exists at all. But don’t worry! This is a GOOD thing. Feeling like this means most likely means that you’ve transformed and re-aligned the part of you that REALLY needed the supportive energy that the crystal was offering you. Now that you've created the needed shift, your crystal is either ready to do its thing all over again or to take a little rest. I realized after working with Rose Quartz over the course of a few months, that a time came when I just didn't feel as called to work with it as I had in the past. I was still very much grieving the loss of my grandma, but Rose Quartz had been such a helpful ally that it really helped me work through some of the toughest times. It became clear that I didn't need that same level of support anymore and it was ok to let go of my connection to my Rose Quartz companions. This didn't mean that my relationship with these stones was over because I knew I could always return to them if I found myself needing their support again. So what should you do with your stones once the connection fades? If you do still feel connected to the stone, even if it wasn’t as strong as when you were going through your big transformation, then you can hang onto it and keep it in your crystal healing toolkit. But if you want to pay it forward and share this energy with another person, you may like to consider giving the crystal as a gift and pass it along to someone else in need. So, if you find yourself being drawn to a specific crystal - LISTEN! It's likely for a very good (and deeply meaningful) reason. As crystal healers, it’s important for us to continue to practice our own inner work and deeper healing by exploring the interior realm of the subconscious mind and the hidden feelings that reside there. Shadow work is the spiritual work of uncovering and reacquainting yourself with the hidden parts of yourself, and recognizing and reintegrating these parts can be really helpful and very healing. Best Crystals for Cancer’s Ruling Planet (the Moon): Each sign of the Zodiac is represented, or ruled, by a planet. Move room by room, observing the energy of the space and listing ways to improve the space. After your list is complete, choose three projects from the list to do by the end of Cancer Season. Ritual Supplies: A Larimar stone (you may substitute any of the Cancer Season stones from the list above) A notebook or some paper A pen or pencil Optional: Something to write on (like a clipboard) Optional: A small cushion to sit upon Gather your supplies. Beginning at the main entrance of your home, walk to the center of the room and place the Larimar stone on the floor in front of you. Sit down and make yourself comfortable (on your cushion if you've chosen to include one), and close your eyes. Hold your hands above the Larimar stone and allow it to help you tap into the energy of the room. Does this space lift you up and support you? Does this space drag you down? Or is it somewhere in between? When you feel ready, open your eyes and look around the room, taking time to notice the colors, textures, objects, empty space, etc. What stands out or calls your attention that needs a little attention and TLC? Write down any observations about the space along with how it makes you feel and why. Be sure to include a list of at least three things that you could do to improve the energy or aesthetics of this space to better suit you. Gather up your supplies, go to an adjacent room, and repeat this process (starting with putting the Larimar stone in the center of the new space). Once you’ve gone through every room (on all stories...don't forget hallways and stairwells), choose at least three tasks from your list of TLC projects to complete during Cancer Season. Crystals for Cancer in Your Chart: In addition to working with crystals during Cancer season, you may also want to work with the following stones if you have Cancer energy in your birth chart. If Cancer is part of your Big 3, you can use the stones suggested below to enhance or balance its energy. Sunstone can always be used in place of a Sun Sign Stone (or you can use any of the Cancer crystals listed at the beginning of this article), and Moonstone can be substituted in place of a Moon Sign Stone. Stone for Cancer as Your Sun Sign: Selenite or Golden Calcite Stone for Cancer as Your Moon Sign: White Pearl or Amethyst Stone for Cancer as Your Rising Sign: White Moonstone or Rhodonite Working with Crystals for Your Big 3: To work with your 3 Astrological Crystals (Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs), you can craft a crystal energy pouch with corresponding crystals and symbols.
