What I'll be watching for in Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers exhibition matchup Oct 27, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs take on the Tennessee Volunteers on Friday, with Mark Few and Rick Barnes squaring off in an exhibition match up to get their clubs ready for the grueling 2022-23 college basketball season.

Today is a preview of that game, which will be on Pay-Per-View with proceeds going to the McLendon Foundation. Will Few play his normal rotation, and if so, who will be in it? Is Dominick Harris healthy enough to play? Will Drew Timme dominate a short Tennessee squad?

Second segment is a conversation with the great Jason Jordan, the head recruiting analyst at Sports Illustrated. Jason breaks down the incoming recruits for Tennessee, including superstar forward Julian Phillips.

Finally, we close the show discussing Gonzaga's recruiting from a conference perspective, how other schools try to dissaude recruits from heading to Spokane, and what a move to the Big East would do to change that.

Why Anton Watson's performance is critical to the Gonzaga Bulldogs national title aspirations Oct 25, 2022

Show notes

The college basketball season is nearly back, and Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs are primed for another deep run into the NCAA Tournament. This year's squad features a ton of talent, including fan favorites, solid veterans, young guys looking to prove something, and incoming transfers ready to make an impact right away.

The longest tenured Zag alongside Drew Timme, forward Anton Watson is primed for another productive season on the defensive end of the floor.

Today's show discusses Watson's history as a star at Gonzaga Prep High School and his steadily improving production through his first three seasons at Gonzaga. Then we look at his best and worst case scenarios for the 22-23 season, including evaluation on his scoring around the rim (great!) and from beyond the arc (not great!).

We also talk about his role with Julian Strawther expected to play more at the four, and the addition of Efton Reid and improvements from Ben Gregg and Kaden Perry. Will he still play 18-20 minutes per night? And what can he do this season to improve his professional basketball aspirations?

The Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Big East Conference: Who would be Zags rival? Oct 24, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are less than one week away from taking on Tennessee in the first exhibition game of the season, which should be a great one for Mark Few and the fans in Spokane. Big East commissioner Val Ackerman recently spoke about the potential for expansion, which could include the Zags in 2025 depending on media rights.

Today's episode is a mailbag, and we discuss who Gonzaga's rival would be in the Big East and how the women's program would fare in a conference that includes the mighty UConn Huskies.

In the second segment we look at what would happen to the WCC if Gonzaga left, with speculation on which schools they might add. I also talk about which teams I'd like to see succeed this year outside of Gonzaga and the WCC - shouting out a former powerhouse in the Mountain West.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about Kelly Olynyk's excellent start with the Utah Jazz and what it means for his future, and a look at Jalen Suggs' hot start this year and what his NBA potential is at this point in his career.

What a healthy Dominick Harris brings to the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the 2022-23 season Oct 21, 2022

Show notes

Dominick Harris is one of the most intriguing pieces of the puzzle. Coming off an entire season missed with a foot injury, Harris was cleared to return to full-contact practice on Monday. Will he be ready to contribute right away for this Gonzaga team, and what kind of role will he have?

We discuss Dom's impactful role as a recruiter, helping to bring the Tricky Trio together, as well as the glimpses of greatness we saw from him as a freshman. But with a very crowded backcourt heading into 22-23, will Harris be a part of the rotation when the season starts? And if not, what can he do to play his way into a bigger role?

What Drew Timme needs to do to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a National Championship Oct 20, 2022

Show notes

The big story wasn't who the Zags added, however, it was who they got back. Drew Timme, a two-time All-American and National Player of the Year candidate, announced he was coming back right before the deadline, setting up what should be another outstanding year of hoops at The Kennel.

We discuss Timme's best and worst case scenarios this year, including what specifically he needs to do in order to lead this program to their first ever national championship victory. We also discuss his potential pro career and whether NBA teams will give him a look or not.

Why the Big East commissioner's comments are a good sign for the Gonzaga Bulldogs Oct 19, 2022

Show notes

Big East commissioner Val Ackerman spoke about conference realignment on Tuesday, expressing confidence in the current member schools but hinting that expansion could happen when the league negotiates a new media rights deal in 2025. Ackerman also indicated the league had informal discussions with multiple schools, of which Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs almost certainly are included. But will the distance from Spokane, Washington to the other member schools be a hurdle too difficult to overcome? And will the Zags wait that long while still in the WCC?

Today's show also discusses Corey Kispert's second season in Washington, where he will miss a few weeks with an ankle injury. What will his role look like when he returns? We close out the show discussing Jalen Suggs, who is amazingly healthy enough to play in game one despite a nasty knee injury suffered in preseason. Is this the year Suggs fully breaks out and becomes an All-NBA defensive player?

Examining the case for the Gonzaga Bulldogs to be No. 1 in the 2022-23 AP Poll Oct 18, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs came in second in the first AP Poll of the 2022-23 college basketball season, behind the North Carolina Tar Heels. Is their fatigue around Mark Few's program, who returns three starters and added a star transfer in Malachi Smith? We discuss where Gonzaga should have been in the AP Poll, and take a look at the resumes for the Tar Heels and the Houston Cougars.

The second segment is a look at Gonzaga's non-conference schedule, which includes four games against top 25 opponents with a fifth potentially coming in the PK85 championship. Between those tough matchups, an exhibition against No. 11 Tennessee, and tough battles with Michigan State and Washington on the docket, is this the hardest schedule the Zags have ever had?

Finally, we close out the show chatting with Sports Illustrated's Jason Jordan, who gives us a look at 2025 prospect Nik Khamenia, who was at Kraziness in the Kennel, as well as Dedan Thomas, who is taking an official visit to Spokane in November.

How the Gonzaga Bulldogs can be an elite defensive team, even without Chet Holmgren Oct 17, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are less than two weeks away from taking on Tennessee in the first exhibition game of the season, which should be a great one for Mark Few and the fans in Spokane.

Today's episode is a mailbag, and the first segment is dedicated entirely to discussing Gonzaga's defense, specifically now that Chet Holmgren is gone. Will Efton Reid step into a rim protection role? How can the guards help improve the team's defense?

The second segment discusses a variety of topics, including Gonzaga's future in the WCC, comparisons to the 20-21 team, and a look at international trips during the offseason.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about Killian Tillie's free agency, Brandon Clarke's new contract, and the Lady Zags ahead of what should be a great season for Lisa Fortier's team.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis Oct 14, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Domantas Sabonis, who is entering his first full season with the Sacramento Kings after getting traded from Indiana at midseason.

We discuss Sabonis' history, how he ended up at Gonzaga and blossoming into a superstar against Utah in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, as well as his disastrous rookie season in OKC, the trade to Indiana, and his emergence as a two-time All-Star with the Pacers.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Sabonis entering the season with the Kings. Will he manage to make the All-Star team again, this time in the very top-heavy Western Conference? How will he gel with De'Aaron Fox over a full season? What about rookie forward Keegan Murray?

We close out the show discussing his expected production in Sacramento, as well as his legacy as a Zag and the program's elite international recruiting.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season preview: Guard Malachi Smith Oct 13, 2022

Show notes

Perhaps the biggest acquisition this offseason is Chattanooga transfer guard Malachi Smith. Smith began his career as a backup at Wright State, and is now primed to take on a big role for the No. 1 team in the country. His history, and how we got here, is discussed in the first segment.

Then, we talk about Smith's best and worst case scenarios for his first year in Spokane. Will his ridiculous efficiency translate at a higher level, especially with better teammates around him? And can he handle primary point guard duties when Nolan Hickman is on the bench?

We discuss his realistic role and expectations in the final segment, along with a conversation about his potential pro career and whether NBA teams will give him a look or not.
