Learn more about Alex Toohey, Gonzaga's latest international recruit and a potential future star Nov 09, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are back on the international recruiting market, securing a commitment from class of 2023 wing Alex Toohey out of the NBA Global Academy in Australia. Mark Few and his staff went to the land down under and stole a prized talent out from under the nose of Randy Bennett, proving that Tommy Lloyd wasn't the only reason Gonzaga could recruit across the ocean.

Today's show discusses Toohey's game and Gonzaga's rich history of international recruiting. Then, we take a look at Kaden Perry's history and what we saw from him in a small role last season before he succumbed to a season-ending injury.

We also talk about Perry's future in Spokane. Will he step into a bigger role in 2023-24 following the likely departures of Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, and Anton Watson? Is he another late bloomer in Gonzaga's development machine? Or will injuries prevent him from reaching the lofty expectations he had put on him in high school, when he drew comparisons to Brandon Clarke?

Gonzaga Bulldogs blow out North Florida Ospreys behind 22 from Drew Timme Nov 08, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are 1-0 after Mark Few's team defeated the North Florida Ospreys, 104-63, at The Kennel in Spokane Washington on Monday afternoon to begin the 2022-23 college basketball season. Drew Timme had 22 points, Anton Watson looked like the best player on the floor, Malachi Smith had 15 and six off the bench, and Rasir Bolton added 11 all in the second half.

Today's episode is a look at the good from Monday's game, including Watson and Smith's performances, Gonzaga's free throw shooting and team defense, as well as the bad - Gonzaga's three-point shooting.

In the second segment we discuss five key takeaways, including Hunter Sallis playing point guard, Gonzaga's unique four-guard lineup, Efton Reid's performance, and even a look at walk-on Colby Brooks.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about other games of note around college basketball, including BYU's near-disaster against Idaho State, Pacific surprisingly staying close with Stanford, Saint Mary's newest star player, and of course a look at how Friday's Gonzaga opponent, Michigan State, looked on opening day.

Bob Huggins thinks the Gonzaga Bulldogs would be in for a rude awakening in the Big 12 Conference Nov 07, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs begin their season with a Monday night tip-off against North Florida, but the big story remains the Big 12 conference showing interest in adding Mark Few's program, even despite the travel to and from Spokane.

Today's episode is mailbag Monday, and we discuss what a move to the Big-12 might look like, other programs that could come along for the ride, and Bob Huggins' recent quotes saying the Zags are in for an awakening if they joined the Big 12.

In the second segment we discuss Drew Timme, specifically what his role will look like on defense and how lineups with him and Julian Strawther will look defensively, and how he and Watson will be able to space the floor together on offense.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about Hunter Sallis' projected playing time, Gonzaga's losses before Christmas, and why we should remain optimistic about this team heading into the new season.

How Ben Gregg can force his way into the rotation for the 2022-23 Gonzaga Bulldogs Nov 04, 2022

Show notes

The college basketball season is nearly back, and Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs are primed for another deep run into the NCAA Tournament. This year's squad features a ton of talent, including fan favorites, solid veterans, young guys looking to prove something, and incoming transfers ready to make an impact right away.

Falling squarely into the young guys looking to prove something camp, Ben Gregg is entering his sophomore season after spending the last two years (including his senior year of high school) in a garbage time bit role.

Today's show discusses Gregg's history and what we saw from him in those garbage time minutes, as well as the growth we've seen this offseason and in bits during Gonzaga's first two exhibition games. We discuss Gregg's best and worst case scenarios for this upcoming season, and how they could dramatically impact Gonzaga's season, both early on and in March.

We also talk about Gregg's future in Spokane. Will he step into a bigger role in 2023-24 following the likely departures of Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, and Anton Watson? Is he another late bloomer in Gonzaga's development machine?

What it would look like if the Gonzaga Bulldogs joined the Big 12 Conference Nov 03, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are known to be in talks with the Big 12 Conference, potentially positioning Mark Few's team to join a league with Baylor, Kansas, Houston, and old foe BYU in the near future.

Today's episode is a crossover between Locked on Zags host Andy Patton and Locked on Big 12 host Josh Neighbors, as they explore the pros and cons of this partnership.

Topics discussed include: if this is a move to try to get more money out of the Pac-12 conference, what it means for the Big East, how travel might work, whether Gonzaga's other sports would be included, what rivalries may or may not develop, where the Big 12 would rank among basketball conferences, how the media rights deal could be altered, road environments, and much much more!

Biggest key for the Gonzaga Bulldogs in 2022-23: Breakout season from point guard Nolan Hickman Nov 02, 2022

Show notes

While multiple players need to step up for this team to make a deep run in March, no player is more critical to this team's success than sophomore point guard Nolan Hickman.

Today's show discusses Hickman's history and what we saw out of him as a freshman. There were some highs, but a dismal second half still looms large for a lot of fans. We discuss Hickman's best and worst case scenarios for this upcoming season, and how they will dramatically impact Gonzaga's season, both early on and in March.

We also talk about Hickman's NBA aspirations, as well as my prediction for how this season will go, and what Hickman needs to do to boost his NBA draft stock ahead of June.

When will the Gonzaga Bulldogs get their breakout season from Hunter Sallis? Nov 01, 2022

Show notes

Perhaps no player has a bigger impact in the second unit on this team than Hunter Sallis, who is coming into his sophomore year ready for a full on breakout.

Today's show discusses Sallis' history and what we saw from him in an up-and-down freshman season, as well as his best case and worst case scenarios as a sophomore. Will the outside shooting and playmaking show up, or is his impact still going to be primarily on the defensive end of the floor?

We also talk about Sallis' NBA aspirations, as well as my prediction for how this season will go, and when Sallis will finally breakout and be a college basketball star and likely first round pick in the NBA draft.

What went wrong for Gonzaga Bulldogs in exhibition loss to Tennessee Volunteers Oct 31, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs built a four point halftime lead, but ultimately got outscored by 23 points in the second half to fall to the Tennessee Volunteers, 99-80, in an exhibition matchup on Pay-Per-View Friday evening. Mark Few and Rick Barnes each played their primary rotations, so the question is: should Zag fans be worried about this team?

Today's episode is a variation of our normal mailbag Monday, with Connor Hope of Heat Check CBB joining us to break down the exhibition game and answer several key questions.

We start by looking at Gonzaga's defense, particularly the communication, and what needs to change for this team to avoid multiple early season losses.

In the second segment we look at the performances of Gonzaga's newcomers - Efton Reid and Malachi Smith - and how they acclimated offensively and defensively. Connor explains why he wasn't surprised Smith is coming off the bench at this point, and talks about Reid's strength down around the rim and how critical it is for the Zags.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about exhibition games at large, and how Few and Barnes are trying to elevate the sport of college basketball by playing these high-profile, but ultimately inconsequential, games prior to the season's tip-off.

How Julian Strawther's new role can help the Gonzaga Bulldogs compete for a national championship Oct 28, 2022

Show notes

One of the most notable changes on Gonzaga's roster is not a newcomer, but rather a new position for forward Julian Strawther, who will step into a Corey Kispert-like role as the Zags' power forward.

Today's show discusses this positional change for Strawther, through the lens of what changed for Kispert in his senior year. Will we see Julian take steps forward as a rebounder, scorer around the rim, and in his free throw attempts? What does that do for the Zags offense? And how does having Strawther play the four impact Gonzaga's guard rotation?

We also talk about Strawther's best and worst case scenarios for this season, and how his new role impacts his NBA aspirations. Will he join Kispert in becoming a first round pick? Lottery pick?
