Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: San Antonio Spurs forward Zach Collins Sep 27, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Zach Collins, who is entering his fifth NBA season and first full year with Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs.

We discuss Collins' history, how he went from being Gonzaga's first five-star recruit and first one-and-done to a starter for the Blazers and now a key piece for San Antonio.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Collins entering his fifth NBA season and first full season with the Spurs. We talk about what his role is likely going to look like, with Jakob Poetl and Keldon Johnson likely occupying starting roles. Will he be the third big like he was in Spokane? Will his outside shooting continue to tick up? And can he handle a facilitator role like he had last season, or will turnovers continue to be an issue for the 24-year-old?

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Utah Jazz forward Kelly Olynyk Sep 22, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Kelly Olynyk, who was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Utah Jazz on Thursday in a deal for Bojan Bogdanovic.

We discuss Olynyk's history, how he went from bench player to All-American at Gonzaga, his time in Boston and Miami, his electric performance with the Houston Rockets in 20-21, and last year with the Detroit Pistons.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Olynyk entering his tenth NBA season and his first with the Utah Jazz. We talk about what his role is likely going to look like. Will he be a starter again in Utah? Is replacing Rudy Gobert good or bad for his career? What role will he have with rookie Walker Kessler? And, of course, is he a potential trade candidate for this rebuilding, cost-cutting Utah squad?

Learn more about the Australian prospect Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs have their eye on Sep 20, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff made a trip out to Australia to check out Alex Toohey at the NBA Global Academy, a prospect being targeted by Randy Bennett and the Saint Mary's Gaels, among many other programs. Could Mark Few land himself his first big international recruit in the post-Tommy Lloyd era?

Joining me today is Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated to discuss Toohey's game and how they evaluate international prospects at these new academies. Jordan also discusses 2023 guard AJ Johnson and 2025 guard Jeremiah Fears, and how each are respectively similar to Jalen Suggs and Andrew Nembhard in their own way.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about the NBA and NBPA potentially adding back the high school straight to the NBA pipeline, and what that means for college basketball, NIL, the G-League, and the top high school players in the country. A riveting discussion on a key topic in college hoops these days.

Determining the factors that make up an NCAA Championship team, and where Gonzaga has come up short Sep 19, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have come so close to perfecting the recipe to win an NCAA college basketball national championship, but Mark Few and the players have continued to fall just short. Is there a perfect mix of things out there the Zags need to put together in order to bring a trophy to Spokane?

Today's episode is a look at three listener submitted questions, each meriting their own segment. Segment one is a look at what it takes to win a national championship, is it high-level recruiting, peaking at the right time, schedule consideration, youth, experience, or sheer dumb luck?

Segment two is a discussion about recruiting in the state of Washington, with analysis on the ten highest rated recruits in the state's history dating back to 2000. None of them went to Gonzaga, but guys like Gary Bell, Steven Gray, Corey Kispert, and of course Adam Morrison outplayed them in college, so what does that mean?

Finally, we end the show with discussion about how greed has impacted the NCAA, notably discussing conference realignment, NIL and how the NCAA enforces it, and Greg Sankey's desire to potentially get rid of the automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament, a wildly unpopular idea that thankfully won't gain much steam.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Memphis Grizzlies forward Killian Tillie Sep 16, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of Memphis Grizzlies forward Killian Tillie, who earned a guaranteed contract last season and is entering his third year in the pros.

We discuss Tillie's history, going from fourth big as a freshmen to making the game-winning free throws in the Final 4 that season, as well as his excellent shooting performance in Las Vegas as a sophomore, and his injury-riddled but still excellent junior and senior seasons.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Tillie entering his third professional season. Will his outside shot materialize at the NBA level, and if not, what does that mean for his future? Memphis drafted and signed multiple bigs with outside shooting abilities, which could be problematic for Tillie's quest to find consistent playing time with the Grizzlies this season.

Date, time, and ticket info for Gonzaga's Kraziness in the Kennel, plus a look at two 2024 targets Sep 15, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff have their sights on a pair of 2024 prospects from Prolific Prep High School in Napa, guard Paul McNeil and center Yves Missi.

Today's episode begins with Sports Illustrated's Jason Jordan discussing McNeil - who was the Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina as a sophomore, and Missi - a rim-running center with an intense motor and excellent footwork. It's too early for guesses as to where each guy is going to go, but Jordan explains why they would make a great fit at Gonzaga if Few and his staff can convince them to come up to Spokane.

After that, Andy goes solo and discusses Kraziness in the Kennel, including date, time, and ticket information, as well as the men's basketball roster release, with some new jersey numbers and a new walk-on, guard Kellen Mitchell.

Finally, the show ends with discussion about Gary Bell, who landed a job as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University at the recommendation of both Few and Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd. Bell is now the fourth former Zag player with a D-1 assistant coach gig, along with Stephen Gentry, Brian Michaelson, and former guest of the show Kyle Bankhead.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Orlando Magic guard Joel Ayayi Sep 13, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of the latest Zag to sign an NBA contract, Joel Ayayi, who will reunite with Jalen Suggs on the Orlando Magic.

We discuss Ayayi's history, going from redshirt/bench player to All-WCC performer while at Gonzaga, going undrafted in 2021 and bouncing around franchises, and his newest contract in Orlando.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Ayayi entering his second professional season with still no guarantee he'll stick around at the NBA, or even G-League, level. We also evaluate what his season might look like, how his role and production will shake out, and why it might make sense for him to look overseas if he can't find a steady foothold in the states.

Previewing the Big East Conference, and a look at how the Gonzaga Bulldogs might fit in the future Sep 09, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are still members of the West Coast Conference, but all this talk about conference realignment has reignited conversation about Mark Few's program potentially joining the Big East in the near future. Could the little school from Spokane end up competing alongside the likes of Creighton, Villanova, Butler, Xavier, and Seton Hall in the coming years?

Joining me today to discuss these rumors is Matt DeMarinis, a writer and podcaster for White and Blue Review, a website dedicated to all things Creighton Bluejays. Matt and I discuss what a move to the Big East might look like for the Bulldogs, and how it could impact more than just the men's and women's basketball programs.

Matt and I also discuss Creighton's performance last year, and the performance of incoming sophomore Ryan Nembhard, the younger brother of former Gonzaga point guard Andrew Nembhard. Will the Bluejays meet their lofty preseason expectations? If not, who is the favorite to win the Big East? Matt discusses new head coaches Kyle Neptune, Thad Matta, and Sean Miller as well as Ed Cooley's job at Providence and whether UConn's bark is worse than their bite.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Wizards forward Rui Hachimura Sep 08, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of one of Gonzaga's most decorated NBA stars, Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura.

We discuss Hachimura's history, going from garbage time player to 20 point per game scorer with the Zags, and eventually getting selected ninth overall in the 2019 NBA draft. We look at the first three seasons of his NBA career, including his performance in the Tokyo Olympics and his absence last year for mental health issues.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Rui entering his fourth NBA season and his final year of his rookie contract. We evaluate what his fourth season might look like, how his role and production will shake out, and which other teams may covet him at the trade deadline or in free agency next year if Washington doesn't re-sign him.

How we evaluate head coaches as recruiters, and a look at recruiting in the West Coast Conference Sep 06, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs may still dominate the West Coast Conference, but coaches like Randy Bennett at Saint Mary's and Lorenzo Romar at Pepperdine are bringing in high level recruits, keeping this conference relevant in the west coast college basketball landscape.

Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated joins the show to discuss the incoming freshmen on both Saint Mary's and Pepperdine's teams, which includes an excellent addition in Aidan Mahaney for the Gaels and USC transfer Boubacar Coulibaly for the Waves. Jason looks at each of these programs and what kind of impact they will have in year one.

Segment two is a longer look at what makes a head coach a good recruiter, with Jason offering his opinion on the matter as well as multiple stories involving Coach K, Levelle Morton, GG Jackson, Corey Kispert, and more! The guys discuss Dana Altman's success as a recruiter but struggles on the court, and how a coach like Bennett can sell his program compared to a juggernaut like Duke, Gonzaga, or North Carolina.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about the NCAA's new transfer portal and what things still need to be done in order to prevent some serious windfall in the college hoops landscape in the coming years.
